PATRICK CAULFIELD (British 1936–2005) A PRINT, "Pink Jug," 1981-1982, screenprint on paper, signed and numbered 29/80 L/R in pencil. 30" x 23 1/2" Note: Pink Jug was designed by the British artist Patrick Caulfield in London in 1981. As with all of his prints, Caulfield initially composed the work in the form of an acrylic painting. It was printed in 1982 at Kelpra Studio, a fine art print workshop in London, on white, heavy-weight, machine-woven paper using serigraph inks, which may have been oil-based. Colour was applied at a uniform thickness across the composition. It was published within an edition of eighty by Waddington Graphics, London, in 1982, although the edition number of this particular print is not known. The work is float-mounted on museum board using paper hinges and has been framed for display by Tate. The critic Mel Gooding has written that the ‘simple, schematic and direct’ style of Caulfield’s prints from the early 1980s represented a shift from the highly complex compositions in his prints and paintings of the mid-to-late 1970s (such as Still Life Ingredients 1976, Estate of Patrick Caulfield, London; Caulfield and Gooding 1998, p.14). ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (American 1925-2008) A PRINT, "Tropic Magazine, Miami Herald Cover," December 30, 1979, lithograph on newspaper cover, The Miami Herald, 39 pp. signed and numbered U/L "Rauschenberg 90/100." 12 1/2" x 10 3/4" Note: While pursuing his MFA at the University of Miami in 1976, artist Leo Rosenblatt created a printmaking process called Stat Art, "a technique incorporating drawing and mixed media on large sheets of commercial copy film in conjunction with light sensitive newspaper printing plates. "Stat Art allowed unusually large runs of original lithographic art to be printed on large commercial newspaper presses with no image deterioration." Rosenblatt began working as the art director for Tropic Magazine, published on Sundays by the Miami Herald, where he continued his experiments with Stat Art, culminating in what he calls "the world's largest edition of an original lithograph," by the well-known Florida resident and prolific printmaker, Robert Rauschenberg. People Magazine was on the story: "On Dec. 30, 1979 the Miami Herald printed 650,000 Rauschenbergs as the cover of its Sunday magazine, Tropic. In essence an original lithograph, it showed images of south Florida. The artist went to the Herald pressroom and signed 150 of them, thus enhancing their value and the jubilation of readers fortunate enough to find one on their doorstep." A LOUIS XVI STYLE MARBLE TOPPED AND BRONZE MOUNTED TULIPWOOD PARQUETRY SECRÉTAIRE À ABATTANT, POSSIBLY BY JOSEPH CREMER, 19TH CENTURY, the thick rectangular fleur de pêcher marble top with caveto trim and shaped corners above similar corners embellished with mounts cast as greek key and laurel branches surrounding an acanthus leaf, flanking a frieze drawer with two berried laurel wreath pulls on an entre lac mount, enclosing conforming panels inlaid à quatre faces alternating beaded florets, above an Oeben cube inlaid fall front door within green tinted striped string inlay continuing to greek key corners and framed by kingwood crossbanding, mounted with a nicely detailed oval beaded shield escutcheon flanked by ribbon tied fruiting cornucopias and scrolling acanthus stems issuing berried laurel branches, the cut steel and brass lock stamped "Duvivier Paris 77 FG St Antoine," opening to reveal an interior fitted with a later green velvet covered writing surface and various open compartments over chevron parquetry inlaid short drawers, over a molded bronze trim on a two door cabinet with each centering chevron parquetry inlay within kingwood crossbanding and bronze encadrements ending in shaped corners adjoining paterae mounts, each door mounted with ribbon tied laurel leaf swags and oval shield cast escutcheons, raised on a molding trimmed base with a shaped apron centering a berried acanthus and flat band mount, on a similarly inlaid tulipwood ground and continuing to block feet, some bronze mounts were removed to reveal verso initials 'JC," includes two keys. Condition: Good condition, restored long ago, darkened surface buildup, gilding rubbed throughout, normal chips and a few small veneer losses, light marks, scratches and general wear throughout. One small paterae mount on lower left side is lacking. The fall front door right side interior has some cracks where the bronze arch hinge slides into the case.This secretaire is solid in its construction utilizing traditional oak along with other woods (ie; walnut, mahogany, cedar) with dovetails, sunk slot screws, and animal glue. Except for the top escutcheon, the bronze mounts are attached from the inside with long threaded screws. The Duvivier locks throw twice locking or unlocking. The top lock is large with two steel teeth instead of the normal one. The upper secretary has double wood-lined sides while the back is not. The upper secretary encloses a separate conforming case fitted with the open compartments and four short drawers as well as the fall-front panel with brass slide hinges closing into the sides of the conforming case. There are two quarter-round wood blocks at top left and right that prevent the conforming case from being pulled from the upper body. Several bronzes were removed and revealed incised JC (possibly Joseph Cremer) on the reverse as well as several other effaced marks. Their use of bronze with various patinations, textures, and applications resulted from years of experimentation including burying bronze slabs in certain treated soils for lengthy periods.
