A DOCUMENTARY ENGLISH PORCELAIN PLATE, PROBABLY COALPORT, LONDON DECORATED, DATED 1814 painted by William Silk with a moonlit coastal scene in a border of roses, 22.5cm diam, faintly signed W Silk 1814 William Silk worked firstly at the Caughley factory where he is known to have painted landscapes and was later employed in the decorating establishment of Charles Muss at Great Windmill Street, London. ++Tiny chip under the rim and wear to gilding on the rim. Note: the signature rubbed off and an impression of it now only visible in the glaze when held at an oblique angle to the light but genuine. An interesting plate, unrestored

The source print "View near Caernarfon" was engraved by Samuel Middiman after G Barrett for Middiman's Select Views in Great Britain, published May 25, 1786. ++Some light wear only. Note the oval butterfly medallion at 12 o'clock possibly over a reserve intended for initials or crest
