It comes to the sale with vendor-assessed very good bodywork and its black paint (this being the rarer colour for the RSP), trim and glass are all said to be very good. The black and red interior has vendor-assessed good seats and very good headlining, trim, door cards and dashboard. This 1955 86' Utility was bought and registered in the mid-1990s by Nicholas Wilks, the youngest son of Land Rover co-creator Spencer Wilks, as a project for his use but plans to restore 'Enry' did not come about due to ill health. When work stopped, fresh oil was added and the coolant drained with the odometer showing a non-confirmable 58,000 miles. Now needing a full restoration this worthy project comes with a current V5, old buff logbook, two keys, receipts for pre-storage work and a quartet of front doors believed to have come from a late Series 1 on the Wilks' Scottish estate. To Schedule a video condition report for this lot please click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 20/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Our vendor says that despite the restoration being carried out nearly three decades ago the bodywork, paint, glass, trim and wheels/tyres still present in excellent order. The wheels have been refurbished and the car's general appearance is very good, with the benefit of lacking any aftermarket additions, our vendor says. As with the outside, the interior has no aftermarket modifications: front seats have recently been re-trimmed in the correct fabric while the rear, which has its original covering, displays slight stretching. The headlining is very good. Such is our vendor's attention to detail they have noted the bonnet pull lever has slightly cracked. The engine is said to be excellent for starting and running and was serviced in February, when all the belts (including the cambelt) were changed. Carburettors were rebuilt and re-jetted and the car was then set up on a rolling road print-out on file). Gearbox and clutch are said to be very good and the brake system was stripped, cleaned and re-built in February – fluids in the axle and gearbox, as well as the brake fluid, were changed at the same time. 1935 Auburn Boat-Tail Speedster ReplicaRegistration no. 626 YUNChassis no. DMV82763CAOdometer Reading: 16,554 MoT Expiry: Exempt *Traditional looks with modern running gear *A fraction of the cost of the 'real thing' *Good mechanical spares support The 1960s saw a rise in the replica (or 'evocation') industry in the USA, where several evocative pre-war cars were reprised with contemporary running gear while retaining the looks of the original model. The Excalibur Mercedes-Benz SSK replica kicked things off in 1963, followed by replicas of Auburns and Cords. This Auburn Speedster replica was built by Campbell Enterprises and Custom Classics using a California Custom Coach company body (who bought the original Auburn design drawings) and our vendor says the bodywork and red paint are good, the glass and Truespoke wheels/whitewall tyres very good. The Ford 7.0-litre V8 engine is rated as very good for starting and good for running and presentation and the vendor says it is 'very reliable and can be driven anywhere.' Running gear-wise the gearbox and brakes are rated as good and the suspension as very good. 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series I 3.8-Litre Coupé Registration no. 674 XVEChassis no. 886335Odometer Reading: 73,133 MoT Expiry: Exempt *Early example, exported to the USA*Vendor says bodywork excellent*Good, interesting history file The E-type's impact on the public when it was announced is now the stuff of legend and to many enthusiasts the early models are the most desirable. As with many E-types this car went to the USA, but as a private import and after some time legendary custom car builder George Barris (who built cars for TV series and for celebrities) converted the engine to a Ford V8 for a television evangelist, who subsequently lost the car over non-payment of taxes. A subsequent Stateside owner reversed the conversion by fitting a period-correct 3.8-litre engine with E-type head. Since arriving in the UK it has enjoyed a thorough restoration with paint stripped to bare metal and, it is reported, most of the original panels retained thanks to their rust-free condition. This 1962 Coupe is said to have excellent bodywork and paint: the glass (featuring heated front and rear screens), external trim and the wheels/tyres are also said to be excellent. The interior is reported to be excellent throughout and it will be noted converted to right-hand drive. Our vendor says the engine is excellent for starting and very good for running, while the running gear is described as excellent throughout, with the gearbox and axle reported to have been rebuilt. A very good history file comes with the car. Featuring a distinct front and different rear light clusters to differentiate it from lesser Austin and Morris versions the 18/85 had a better interior, with wooden door fascias and dashboard imparting a more upmarket air. This example comes to auction with good bodywork, chrome and wheels/tyres (the correct Wolseley trimrings still in place) and the dark blue paint is vendor-rated as very good. The medium blue seats are in good order, although the driver's seat shows light wear to the piping and there are a couple of nicks in the material. Carpet, door cards and the expansive wooden dashboard are in average order. Engine staring is rated as poor but the vendor notes a new starter motor may be required, while running is rated as average and some light re-commissioning has been suggested by the vendor. 1953 Martin 500cc Historic Formula 3 Racing CarOdometer Reading: N/AMoT Expiry: Exempt *Very good bodywork*Photo album records car's disassembly*Has early 1990s scrutineering ticketsThe Martin was built between 1953/54 and 1956, company founder Ray Martin having previously worked for Alvis and De Haviland as well as Kieft. His cars used swing-axle rear suspension and mainly fitted with Norton engines, and one car, driven by C.D.Headland, notched up some victories. MPH's 1953 model has very good/excellent alloy bodywork: it and the chassis were checked, re-shaped and re-fitted by one Reg Hargreaves, who found the car in Scotland. The engine, a short-stroke Triumph unit, breathes through Amal carburetors and drives through a four-speed Norton transmission. Keeping everything rolling, our vendor says hubs were built by Terry Windle and the wheels spoked and built by Special Automobile Services. While there is scant early history it is known the first owner was a Mr Watson, after which the trail goes cold until it was found by Reg Hargreaves. To Schedule a video condition report for this lot please click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 80/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 'The Nell Collection'1935 Alvis Speed 20SC Coachwork by CharlesworthRegistration no. BVX 91Chassis no. 12050Odometer Reading: TBCMoT Expiry: Exempt *Part of a deceased estate*Said to be very good bodily and mechanically*Good history fileAs with many buyers of superior-quality cars in the 1920s and 1930s, Alvis buyers were able to select the coachbuilder of their choice to effect a design that best suited their needs. While many selected a saloon body, some buyers preferred something that was more sporting and more rakish. Charlesworth, the company that bodied this 20SC, was based in Coventry and began in 1907, folding in the immediate post WW2 period, and its work in the 1930s was called 'Charlesworth's finest era' in Nick Walker's 'A-Z of British Coachbuilders 191-1960'. This example comes to the auction with vendor-assessed very good bodywork, medium paint, trim and wheels/tyres. The interior too is reported to be very good, with green seats, carpet and door cards (whose design is especially appealing) presenting very well and the wooden facings and dashboard in commensurate order. Turning to the mechanical side the engine is said to be very good for starting, running and presentation and the running gear, including gearbox, brakes and suspension is vendor-assessed as very good, with the electrics in the same condition. At the time it was the world's most expensive production car and among its buyers was politician and diarist Alan Clark, who heaped praise on the car's power. This example is said to have very good bodywork, paint and trim, the 'Silica' hue being a more unusual yet eminently suitable colour choice. The interior is also described as very good, the fawn-coloured seat facings showing little signs of wear, while the dashboard, carpets, headlining and door cards are equally good. The engine is described as excellent for starting, running and for presentation and the running gear, including gearbox, brakes and suspension, are also given a very good ranking, as are the electrics. 1966 Bristol 408 Sports SaloonRegistration no. FTL 423DChassis no. 408-7206*One of only 83 made*5.1-litre Chrysler V8 engine*Automatic transmission*Subject of a 'ground upwards' professional restorationThe Bristol Aeroplane Company's career as a motor manufacturer began in the aftermath of WW2 when the firm obtained the rights to BMW's automotive designs as part of Germany's post-WW2 reparations. Thus it came about that the Bristol 400, which commenced production in 1947, was effectively a synthesis of three pre-war BMW designs, with a chassis derived from that of the 326, a six-cylinder engine from the 328 sports car, and an aerodynamic bodyshell similar to that of the 327 coupé. But Bristol did more than simply copy the work of its German counterparts, and the application of aviation industry standards to its manufacture resulted in a car more refined and considerably better constructed than its Teutonic forbears.Bristol's line of V8-engined sports saloons began in 1961 with the 407, though in appearance the newcomer closely resembled the preceding six-cylinder 406. The adoption of Chrysler V8 power came not before time, as Bristol's BMW-based engine had effectively been outgrown by the car's increasingly weighty coachwork. With 250bhp (more than double the 406's output) available from its 5.1 litres and a top speed of 125mph, the 407 re-established the Bristol as a true high-performance car but one which nevertheless retained all the refinement and luxury associated with the marque. The 406's four-wheel disc brakes were, naturally, retained for its successor, which came with Chrysler's Torqueflite automatic transmission as standard equipment and coil-spring front suspension in place of the previous transverse-leaf set-up. The chassis was updated and the styling revised periodically throughout the 1960s, the process culminating in the 411 of 1969.The car offered here is an example of the restyled 408 model, only 83 of which were produced between 1963 and 1965. 'FTL 423D' was first registered on 12th January 1966. The car has the 5.2-litre Chrysler V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission, and has been the subject of a 'ground upwards' professional restoration. Described by the vendor as in superb condition, this rare and desirable Anglo-American Grande Routière is offered with a V5 registration document. To Schedule a video condition report for this lot please click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 54/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Offered here is a 1964 example whose five-year restoration – said by the vendor to showroom condition – was completed in 2016. The bodywork and Antique White paint, along with chromework, trim and wheels/tyres are vendor-rated as excellent. The red interior is reported to be excellent throughout, including seats, carpets, dashboard and trim. Engine starting, running and presentation are all said to be excellent and the running gear (as well as the electrics) is excellent throughout, the vendor says. Some history comes with the car.
