Worc:I.Y.), second officially renamed, contact marks to first and last, very fine and better, mounted court style, together with a Canadian Memorial Cross, G.VI.R. (117053 C.S.M. J. Beale), the suspension bar engraved Christina Beale, the lot is sold with an extensive amount of research Imperial Yeomanry L.S. & G.C. notified in Army Orders of February 1905. C.A.F. L.S. & G.C. Canada Gazette 23 September 1922. Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant James Beale (1866-1945), born in Lewisham, Kent, served during the Boer War with the 16th (Worcestershire) Company, 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry from 8.2.1900 - 11.6.1901, discharged in Worcester 18.6.1901. Beale emigrated to Alberta, Canada where he enlisted with the 15th Calgary Horse 6.1.1915 and served in the Great War on the Western Front with the Fort Garry Horse unit 23.2.1916 - 22.10.1917, discharged unfit after service on the Somme (November 1916) and later in 1917 being knocked down by a horse and trampled. After his death in September 1945, his widow Christina Beale was issued with a Memorial Cross in January 1946. Provenance: The John Tamplin Collection. (6)

Shapland, 16th Coy 5th Imp:Yeo:), Imperial Yeomanry Long Service & G.C. (711 Cpl H.J. Shapland. Worc: (Q.O.W.Hrs.) I.Y.), light contact marks to first, generally good very fine 711 Corporal Henry J. Shapland, born Worcester 1881, enlisted with the Worcestershire Yeomanry 7.12.1899. Received a gunshot wound accidentally from a colleague 25.2.1913, and discharged as a result of wound to the wrist. * A Great War Pair to Private P. Whebell, Worcestershire Yeomanry, Dangerously Wounded at Ras el Nagb 3.11.1917, British War and Victory Medals (3894 Pte. Whebell. Worc.Yeo.), good very fine 3894 Private P. Whebell, served with the Worcestershire Regiment in the Egyptian Theatre of War from 30.1.1917, attached to the 5th Mounted Brigade Machine Gun Squadron 7.3.1917, reported dangerously wounded by a gunshot wound to the chest received at Ras el Nagb 3.11.1917, the Turks were entrenched in the slopes around Ras el Nagb, and the Brigade came to the relief of the 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade who had already been in the thick of it, the Worcester`s led up the valley at a steady canter under a hail of machine-gun and rifle fire bullets, the pace of the Bridage put the Turkish marksmen off their aim and the target was reached with little loss. Most of the casualties were through sniping during this action. Had the Allied Forces not have taken the position at Ras el Nagb its position would have rendered the infantry attacks on the far side of the valley even more difficult than they were, if not almost impossible. Lieutenant Arthur Innocent, born in Ningbo, China 1888, Innocent`s father was the Commissioner of Customs in Hangchow, China. Innocent served with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles from 8.12.1915, served on the Western Front with the Canadian Machine Gun Section from 27.11.1916, transferred to the Fort Garry Horse 16.6.1916 when nominated for a Commissioned Lieutenant in the 9th Warwickshire Yeomanry 27.11.1916. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers 22.8.1917. (4)

* A fascinating archive of black and white photographs relating to Flight Sub Lieutenant Laurence Pratt Openshaw, Royal Naval Air Service Later 47 Squadron, R.A.F., in four large albums:First titled `Self at Various Ages from 13`, including schooling and football teams, service with the Leicestershire Regiment Cadets showing Openshaw as a boy in unform, pre First World War service with the Somerset Light Infantry and War Service with the Royal Naval Air Service, one photo included in this album shows Openshaws bi-plane crashing titled `F.O. Openshaw crashing over side H.M.S. Areus 30.1.20`. Second titled `Port Said, Imsmalia, Cairo, Pyramids, Heliopolis, Villages, Barrage`, all aerial views, well documented with dates ranging from 31.10.1931 - 12.5.1933, notably Sultan Hassan Mosque from 10,000ft, 21.10.1930. Potters Bar Zeppelin L31. An original mimeographed copy of Chief Inspector Walter Crook`s duty report for the night of the 1st October, Enfield Police Station, 2nd October 1916,beginning at 6:59pm, then at 11:02 pm the first sounds of an airship engine are noted, by 11:38 pm a Zeppelin was sighted travelling east and giving readings for the following fifteen minutes, noting that she caught fire at 11:55 pm and then began to fall, then `She came to the ground & there was a momentary increased glare of light. We verified the position from our Map & reported at once to OR that we estimated the position where the Zeppelin fell at Potters Bar. During the time the Zeppelin was in sight there was not so much gunfire as usual, & that only from about 11:40 to 11:46 pm. Two or three shells seemed to come very near her & one in particular appeared to burst very close to & slightly above her nose... `, continuing to record further details following the event until they were dismissed by OR at 3:17 am, 4 pp. on four sheets, damp stained, soiled and frayed with some bleeding of ink but no loss of legibility of any text, folio The Zeppelin L31 was under the command of Kapitan Heinrich Mathy, a Zeppelin flying ace on his fifteenth raid. On this occasion Second Lieutenant Wulstan Tempest engaged the Zeppelin just before midnight and it crashed near Potters Bar with all nineteen crew dying. It was the second downing of a German airship in the area in a month, a wooden airship having been brought down over Cuffley on the 3rd September. Tempest was later promoted to Major and order the DSO. (1)

A fine presentation scale model of the famous war-machine of the German Luftwaffe during the Third Reich and WWII, c. 1938,hollow-form, of fabricated & welded thin steel-plate with excellent detail including nickel-plated rotating propellers, celluloid observation nacelle, cockpit and gun-turret, engine exhausts and bombs to underside, beautifully finished in period ñsplit-camouflageî light & dark green upper works and pale blue-green undersides, with distinctive Luftwaffe markings to wings and tail, on an adjustable swivel-mount above a circular black steel base, having painted inscription ñHeinkel-Kampflugzeug - HE-IIIî, w/span 30 in (76 cm) This fine model was created in the apprentice-department of the Heinkel Aircraft works, one of at least two known models, and presented to Hans Riekert in 1938, in recognition of his services to Aviation and in particular to Heinkel for research and test flying their aeroplanes. A photo-copy image of a similar presentation model accompanies this original example. Acquired at auction in London circa late 1980s, along with the preceding two lots. (1)

A good pre-war flying helmet formerly from the London Flying Club Hendon, c. 1930s,of soft light tan kid leather, with woven woollen lining, having applied maker`s label to crown inscribed Le Dux, London, fur trimmed to neck & forehead, excellent original condition showing little use, acquired by the vendor at source from direct connection to Hendon Aerodrome (1)
* Propeller - Fairey Aviation Co., De Havilland ñFox Mothî. A scarce original twin-blade airscrew propeller for the light passenger Biplane aircraft G-ACCB, c. 1940s,of cast alloy construction having original applied Fairey Aviation maker`s transfers to each blade and yellow-painted blade-tips, complete with original matching hub and domed hub-cover, good original condition. It is accompanied by an original promotional postcard photograph depicting the aeroplane with Giro Aviation Co headed address, and certificate of flight taken verso, together with an unused booklet of flight-payment receipt-tickets, 80 in (104 cm) A true rarity, as relatively few aeroplanes were built or survive, this was retained by Giro Aviation Co. as a spare for their aircraft registration no G-ACCB, which operated around the British coastline giving joy-ride flights to holidaymakers, especially operating from Southport and Blackpool Beaches in the summer months.
