Authentic Hand Knotted Persian Rug. 15ft x 10ft. From the information that was provided by the vendor, this rug was imported from Mauritius and took approximately 14 years in making. Vendor paid £27000 including transportation costs 15 years ago. Shalimar / Tabraaz Kashmir is the most beautiful regions of India, mogul rulers were always happy to retreat from the heat of the plains to the cool green heights of Kashmir and indeed Jahangir’s last words, when he died while en route to the “happy valley” was a simple request for only Kashmir. The moguls developed the art of their formal garden style to its greatest heights in Kashmir. One of Kashmir’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly the Dol Lake and of course it’s houseboats. Moguls have not built any palaces in and around this heavenly state. They have built gardens in which they tried to represent all the beauty of the state. The family of artists knotting this Shalimar carpet design have also tried to show the beauty of the state (Srinagar) in their masterpiece design Shalimar. Shalimar garden was constructed by one of the Mogul emperors Jahangir for his beloved “Nur Jahan”. “Nur Jahan” means the light of the world as Kashmir is considered for the whole world. In this design, the family of the weaver has shown the flower vases at the entrance of the garden which denotes the happy welcome to the valley of orchards, and to the formal garden to its greatest heights in Kashmir. Then it represents the greatest attractions of Dal Lake by showing the kanals on both the sides of it. It shows the Dal Lake which is like a vast sea where one gets confused with the Dal starts and where it ends. Weaver has tried to show in his craft the drykes of “floating gardens” which separate the Dal Lake. We can’t see very well in this design of carpet that the family wants to show the Dal is a maze of intricate waterways rather than a simple sheet of open waters. We can also see the trees in the design of the carpet, which tells us that within the lake or two islands which are popular picnic spots - Gold Island (Sona Lake) and Silver Island (Rupa Lake). On both the sides we can find the huge Chinar trees, because both the islands have Chinar trees on them. It has become very famous with us, but very difficult to manufacture many rugs of the same as it takes nearly 4 1/2 years to complete one piece of 10.1 x 5.5 feet. In this design of carpet, if we see minutely, we can find that the family wants to tell us something about the terraces of the garden. During Mogul period the top, most of the four terraces was reserved for the Emperor and the ladies of the court. The image of the mosque is clearly shown by the craftsmanship. It represents the Muslim dominated culture of the happy Valley. It also says us about the famous and biggest mosque of Srinagar build under Jahangir reign, i.e, Jamai Masjid. Birds in the design represent the early sunrise in the Dal Lake. Where whole the Dal opens its arms for the welcome of its admirers. The doll opens by the murmuring of the birds in floating gardens and on the Chinar trees of the islands. The family of design has tried to show the whole scenery of the Kashmir in small sizes. This carpet is handmade/hand knotted. Every knot of the carpet is individually knotted which is clear by the intricacy of the exclusive carpet.
1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Long Wheel Base Limousine by Parkward & Co, London made for H.M. Ambassador in Khartoum and latterly owned H.H. Sheikh Al-Ahmad Al Jaber Al- Sabah the former Prime Minister of Kuwait. Registration 833 XVX, Chassis ELW78. Six-cylinder 4.9 litre straight six engine with automatic transmission, power steering and servo-assisted brakes. This rare coach-built limousine has its original cream over light brown colour scheme with tinted windows and white wall tyres designed to reflect the intense heat of the Sudanese sun which would have boiled the occupants of the more usual black Government cars. It has many special features including two roof-mounted electric fans with leather blades ( for safety), a cocktail cabinet, a wireless mounted in a cabinet, jump seats, reading lights, and an electric division. After being used by Sir Edwin Chapman-Andrews KCMG, OBE (1903-1980) the British Ambassador in the Sudan it eventually made its way to America and thence returned to the Far-East when it was bought by the Sheikh and former Prime Minister of Kuwait for his famously large car collection where it resided in the underground car park under his Palace. Late last year it came back to these shores when our vendor purchased it, UK registered it and re-commissioned it for the road. It is a car of huge presence and of the very highest quality. The paintwork is mellow in areas but very presentable whilst the interior is generally in excellent condition with brown hide to the front and cream hide to the rear. The beautiful veneered cabinet work is a joy to behold and the car now drives very well. A full list of the re-commissioning is available to view. The indicated mileage is approx 12,623 (probably 112,623) miles. It is sold with V5, copies of original build sheets, various research and related documents. (Subject to 12% buyers premium inclusive of VAT).Good original condition, paintwork is presentable but has some crazing particualy to the wings, some splits and loose areas . The coachwork seems structuraly good with no dropping to the doors which close with a satisfying clunk. The interior is in very good original condition and has many special feature specified on the build sheets which are still present, ie fans, radio, cocktail cabinet etc.Mechanically the car drives well with a smooth gear change and generally quiet engine. It has recently been re- commisioned and the list of work has now been added to the images on our website.

Reinhart purchased villa Am Römerholz in his hometown which was to become his own private gallery to house his collection as well as his private residence. In 1940 Reinhart donated the Austrian, German and Swiss works of art from his collection to the town of Winterthur which was housed from 1951 in the Museum Oskar Reinhart, now within the Kunst Museum including pieces by Caspar David Friedrich and Adolph Menzel. The rest of the collection was bequeathed to the Swiss Confederation including his home in 1958 and this opened to the public in 1970 and is still available to visit today. The original bequest included over five hundred paintings and several thousand drawings.Reinhart was particularly drawn to French Impressionists and he enjoyed mixing old masters with modern masters arranging displays in order of form and colour rather than period. λ HAROLD DEARDEN (BRITISH 1888-1962)WORKMENOil on canvas, unframed50.5 x 61cm (19¾ x 24 in.)Harold Dearden, Lot 108-111 - The collection of works capture an intimate insight into the life of a farmer and his family, and the daily chores of everyday duties. Despite the serious subject matter showing the arduous nature of farm life Dearden has chosen a light pastel palette which brings to life the figures across the canvas creating an idyllic rural setting. Dearden studied at Rochdale School of Art before attending the Royal College of Art between 1910-1915 under the tutelage of Gerald Moira, the English muralist. Dearden moved to Swindon where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. He became head of the Swindon Art School from 1920 and president of Swindon Artist's Society. Dearden's fascination with people, families and everyday tasks is evident throughout his body of work. His depiction of Caribbean Family in Trafalgar Square and Indian Women in Trafalgar Square held in the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery are particularly striking. Please note measurements do not include the frame unless otherwise stated. Condition Report: The canvas is unlined, but the paint layers appear stable. λ ROBERT BAIN (BRITISH/SOUTH AFRICAN 1911-1973)THE IMACULATE CONCEPTION , 1971Carrara marble Signed 45cm (17½in.) Height inc. base Provenance:Direct from the artist's family Robert Bain rose to prominence in 1948 when he beat Pietro Annigoni to the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze's gold medal for his interpretation of Michelangelo's David. The work was later exhibited in 1962 at the Association of Arts Gallery in Cape Town. Born in Edinburgh in 1911 Bain went on to marry Mary Lochiel in 1932 and after the birth of their son Robbie they moved to South Africa. On arrival Bain took up the post of senior lecturer at the Port Elizabeth School of Art. After further study and practice in Italy Bain returned to South Africa and started as head of the Johannesburg School of Art. Bain exhibited widely throughout his career across South Africa and completed important commissions including the bronze relief doors for the South African Reserve Bank in Port Elizabeth and a monumental sculpture of King George IV, for which preparatory studies were made during the royal tour of South Africa in 1947. Robert Bain worked with wood, bronze and marble frequently experimenting with forms in Gesso before producing finished carvings in marble. Bain drew on religious topics, figural depictions and members of his local community. The Immaculate Conception cast in bronze was cast in 1968 and larger version was carved in marble in 1971. These sculptures encapsulate purity, fertility and motherhood. Transcendental flight signifies strength and power. The form twists with smooth curves creating a tall, standing structure which reflects Bain's reoccurring exploration of African iconography through tribal totems and tablets.Condition Report: Light surface dirt throughout. Glue residue visible to lower edges where the sculpture attaches to the platform. Some evidence of light staining and marks scattered across the surface.
