By its 10th anniversary, some 1,036 women had been admitted. To correct and to train rather than to punish seemed to be the order of the day, and although it was not a surgical hospital, doctors and surgeons from nearby hospitals could be called upon if required. The hospital adapted to change over the years and finally closed its doors in 1966. James Simpson held the title of Honorary Surgeon at Magdalen from 1783 to 1805.Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. Some light surface scratches, as to be expected and commensurate with age. Hallmarks a little worn but the engraving and decoration are clear and crisp. fully marked cover a good fit. Richard and Mary were married at the Parish Church of St George, Hanover Square, Westminster, Middlesex on the 13th May 1819. Richard was the only son of Richard Nugent-Temple-Grenville, the 1st Duke of Buckingham and Chandos and his wife, Lady Anna Eliza Brydges, de jure Lady Kinloss, daughter and sole heiress of James Brydges, 3rd and last Duke of Chandos and his second wife, Anne Eliza Gamon, whilst Mary was the second daughter of John Campbell, the 1st Marquess of Breadalbane and his wife, Mary Turner Gavin.This goblet celebrates the birth of their son, Richard Plantagenet Campbell Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville (1823 - 1889). From his birth until 1839, Richard was commonly known by the courtesy title of Earl Temple. Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. The event was given Group 3 status in 1971 and upgraded to Group 2 in 2014. In 2011, the race was moved from Newmarket to Ascot and renamed the British Champions Long Distance Cup, forming part of the British Champions Day scheduled to take place every October.In October 1972, the winning horse was ‘Irvine’, owned by Charles St George, ridden by Lester Piggott and trained by Henry Cecil. A Victorian silver tobacco box, mark of Horton & Allday, Birmingham 1899, of circular form, flush fitting 'squeeze-to-open' spring loaded cover engraved LLOYDS 7TH MAY 1900 RICHARD WHITE NAVAL BRIGADE PO FIRST CLASS HMS POWERFUL LADYSMITH, around the Coat of Arms of Lloyds of London, gilded interior with personal engraving, 7cm diameter, 2.4oztProvenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)HMS Powerful was the lead ship of her class of two protected cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s. She was initially assigned to the China Station and then provided landing parties which fought in the Siege of Ladysmith of 1899–1900, during the Second Boer War.Ordered home in 1899, from her position in the South China Sea, Powerful was diverted around the southern tip of Africa in light of rising tensions between the British and the Boers in South Africa. They stopped in Mauritius to pick up soldiers. Her sister ship, Terrible, commanded by Captain Percy Scott, arrived the following day and Scott improvised field carriages from a pair of 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns and a pair of Terrible's 12-pounder guns, after a request from Lieutenant General George White, Commander of the besieged forces at Ladysmith, for more long-range artillery. Powerful ferried all four guns to Durban, with the artillery reaching Ladysmith on the last two trains to make it through.They were met with a hero's welcome on their return home, and the naval brigade paraded for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on 6th May.The current Royal Navy field gun competition commemorates the participation of Terrible and Powerful in the relief of Ladysmith.Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. Third Reich Transitional Hitler Youth Boys Dagger by Hartkoff & Co, Solingen, good example with two piece black chequered grips with enamel HJ diamond inserted to the centre. Housed in its original blackened steel scabbard with leather belt loop fitting to the reverse. Knife type blade with makers mark to the reverse and RZM M7/40. Some light staining to the blade and some scratches to the scabbard but otherwise a good example overall. Blade 5 ½ inches, overall 10 inches.
WW2 Japanese Officers Sword Katana, good example with standard military mounts. Sharskin grip with brown cloth binding wrap. Two holes to the tang, which is signed on both sides. Brass menuki, copper fuchi and brass tsuba. Brown lacquer wood scabbard saya with brass mounts, small crack to the lacquer towards the bottom. Polished blade with copper habaki and hamon line. Some light stains and one small nick out of the blade. Attached to the grip is a modern replacement sword knot. Blade measures 26 ½ inches, overall 38 ½ inches.
Third Reich NSDAP Ortsgruppe Political Leaders Peaked Cap, fine example of a standard NSDAP political leaders peaked cap in the tan cloth with light blue piping to the crown and bordering the brown velvet central band. Gilt metal NSDAP political cap eagle and cockade with swastika roundel to the centre. Gilt officers cap cords with two gilt pebbled side buttons. Brown peak with cross hatching to the underside. Interior with near mint condition sweatband which has perforated forehead section and imprint stamping to the side. Fine yellow satin cloth lining which retains the celluloid diamond, cracked in places, which has the printed name label of the original owner, ‘Friedemann, W, Ortsgr. D. NSDAP (PL) Grüna (Sa), after the name the writing is in gothic script. Inked to the cloth lining is ‘D.H.’, possibly the initials of the veteran who brought the cap home as a souvenir. Underneath the sweatband is the original linen RZM label. Some dustiness and light fading to the exterior of the cap but overall this is a very nice example of a Political leaders peaked cap.
Rare Third Reich NSDAP Reichsleitung-Ordensburg Political Leaders Peaked Cap, good example of a NSDAP political leaders cap for the Ordensburg political school. Cap is a standard NSDAP type produced in a fine tan cloth with yellow piping to the crown and bordering the central brown velvet band. Gilt NSDAP political eagle cap eagle and cockade with central enamel swastika roundel. Fine celluloid cap cords with pebbled side buttons. Both sides of the cap with two vent holes. Brown peak with cross hatch to the underside. Black sweatband and satin cloth lining with celluloid diamond to the centre. Underside of the sweatband with RZM linen label. Scarce Waffen-SS Handschar Division Field Grey Enlisted Ranks Fez, fine example of the field grey / green felt fez as worn by the Bosnian troops in the Waffen-SS Handschar division. Headdress has the original bevo Waffen-SS cap eagle and bevo Totenkopf skull insignia correctly stitched to the headdress. Green toggle top with dark green tassels stitched to the rear section. Interior retains the original dark green sweatband. Shows just light service wear. Overall a very good example of a rare to find item of Waffen-SS headdress.
