* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), ALSTROEMERIA AND IMARI oil on board, signed, titled verso image size 54cm x 60cm, overall size 73cm x 79cm Framed and under glass. Comment: an outstanding and highly detailed Ethel Walker still life. Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer) and in our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer).

Shrouds of this type became popular in the Late Dynastic Period all the way through the Ptolemaic period and had both decorative and more importantly symbolic use, as the burial was a highly magical process. To the Egyptians, rebirth and accession into the afterlife were more important than the life they first lived. Ca. 4th–5th century AD. A glass unguentarium with a piriform body standing on an applied disc base featuring an everted mouth and applied handles that join the shoulder to the rim. The original light blue glass shines through in places and the patina that has formed over the glass displays patches of beautiful iridescence. Unguentaria, like alabastra in ancient Greece, were vessels used to store perfume or toilet oil in the Roman period. Ca. 1st-3rd century AD. Blown glass flask with a roughly cuboid body and an elongated neck that flares outwards towards the top. Deep green-brown hue. Roman glass expanded upon Hellenistic techniques with the arrival of glass blowing in the 1st century, popularising the material and allowing the manufacture of vessels that looked ethereal, then and now, with swirling colours that catch the light magnificently. Although the Romans did not invent glass, they certainly revolutionised it. Ca. 1000-1100 AD. An iron axe head with a broad blade flaring to the curved cutting edge, with an eared socket with a round aperture. Commonly referred to as the Danish axe. Axes were commonly used within the Viking communities, almost everything was formed of wood making it unsurprising that many axes existed for constructing ships, houses, carts, as well as other objects. Ca. 2050-1786 BC. A large limestone carved in raised relief with two columns of hieroglyphs containing titles of an official, the column on the left translated " The Seal Bearer (Treasurer) of the King of Upper Egypt. The sole companian..." and the second "{The one who is upon} His two River Bankks (meaning, one who is faitful to the Pharaoh), the Overseer of (The granary?) of Amun....". The titles are common to the Middle Kingdom of Dynasty XII to which period this piece can be assigned. Some normal light weathering to surface. Professionally repaired from three pieces. During Ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom stelae served and offer many different functions, not only funerary but also marking territories and publish law and decrees. The ancient Egyptians were renowned for their stelae; one of the earliest examples was carved in the mid-to-late third millennium BC. Stelae were used to publish specific laws and decrees, to record a ruler’s achievements, commemorating military victories. As the Pharaohs of the Middle Kingdom repaired and restored Egypt’s stability, they formed a resurgence of art, literature, and monumental building projects which including tombs and burial objects. Montuhotep II was thought to the first pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom who restored stability after a period of pharaonic weakness and civil war. The most power pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom was Senusret III who was led the kingdom to an era of peace and prosperity producing many beautiful limestones wall fragments and stelae providing accounts of his achievements.
