May 17th 2021 Just Before Sunset - Oil & Graphite. Every so often just before it sets the the sun can light places up in a way never seen before. This happened one evening this May when I saw the sun light up a big poplar and a distant building and I didn’t want that beautiful moment to pass forgotten and unrecorded.
Ivy on an Oak Tree - Watercolours and coloured pencils + gloss varnish. You posted yourself at my feet stealing my water, air and light. You promised our union would be symbiotic, evergreen. You lied, feigning affection you wound yourself around my trunk. Penetrated, weakened, dying my identity lost beneath your green cloak.Boasting you were self supportingyou grew up and over my dead body.
Sea Gazing - Watercolour, ink, acrylic. A pathway leads from a bright open space into a shadowy wood - or is it leading from the shadows into the light? To travel in the natural landscape, no matter what the direction or the terrain, enriches the mind, body and soul and balances our view of the World. A necessary escape from the pressures of the urban and industrial landscape..
Harlequin in Hibernation - Watercolour. The World Land Trust is currently protecting the European hedgehog to ensure its survival in the future. My painting of a hedgehog in multicolour is a depiction of the protection and hope for the mammal synonymous to the rainbow motif which has been a sign of light at the end of the tunnel during the COVID pandemic.
Into the Woods - Pastel. A pathway leads from a bright open space into a shadowy wood - or is it leading from the shadows into the light? To travel in the natural landscape, no matter what the direction or the terrain, enriches the mind, body and soul and balances our view of the World. A necessary escape from the pressures of the urban and industrial landscape.
Towards the Light - Oil on Board. "Towards the light" was inspired by a visit to a beach on the North West Coast of Ireland. After a surf session just before last light, the dark stormy sky over an empty beach, started to allow flickers of light and colour to break through, culminating in an amazing glimpse of the sun setting. The painting is trying to show however much darkness there seems to be, there is always light trying to break through.
The Last Reed Bed - Quick drying oil. My submission is a piece called The Last Reed Bed. It reflects the survival of natural spaces in our environment. I personally love Reed beds for their changing appearance throughout the year and the way light alters the appearance especially when water is involved. Of course they are a haven for the majestic Harriers circling above and the Reed bunting. Capturing the wind swept landscape and the colours of nature was the aim.
New Day New Hope - Mixed Media - textiles acrylic. ‘I have called the piece ‘New Day New Hope’ it is created using textiles and acrylic paints. I was inspired by my love for a seascape and how people are feeling at this stage in the pandemic. The current situation with the vaccines being rolled out and the easing of restrictions means that each day brings better news and there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.’
