Pictorialism -- Photographer: Erwin Raupp (1863-1931). Houses alongside lake. 1904. Vintage gum bichromate print. Circa 40 x 30 cm. Signed and dated by the photographer in white paint in lower left corner, flush-mounted to board and framed under glass in original wood frame (some scratches).Erwin Raupp was a court photographer in Dresden and a well-known portraitist. He portayed such renowned artists as Franz Lenbach and the writer Karl May. Towards the beginning of the century he worked in pigment processes, producing pictorialist images of high quality that could compete with those of his contemporaries such as Frank Eugene, Hugo Erfurth, Jacob Hilsdorf, Th. and O. Hofmeister, Heinz Kühn and Baron A. de Meyer. The gum bichromate process was invented circa 1855 by Alphonse Louis Poitevin (1819-1887), but it did not gain much notice until 1895, when Robert Demachy developed a new variant based on Poitevin's process and it soon became widely used by pictorialist photographers. – Foxing spots in upper sky area, some light discoloration in mid lake and lower area, slightly buckled, otherwise a rich tonal print in good condition (not examined outside frame).Lit.: Fritz Kempe. Industrial Photography -- Photographer unknown. Documentation photos of early reinforced concrete construction, Fußach, Bregrenz, Germany. 1907. 5 vintage gelatin silver prints. Each circa 18 x 13 cm. Each with architect's stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso.This very unusual series of images documents the construction of one of the first major iron-concrete buildings in Germany. The engineering company Heimbach & Schneider built a water tower in Fußach near Bregenz in 1907. The original photographs are accompanied by an offprint of the magazine "Beton u. Eisen" from October 1907. The Königliche Anatomie in Munich, the first building of its kind, was also built the same year. – A few light traces of use, minimal silvering in edges, otherwise in good condition.
Lambert, Gustave Richard -- "Fruits of Singapore". 1881 or later. Albumen print. 20,5 x 27 cm. Annotations in English in pencil naming various fruits on the verso. Among a variety of fruits a bottle of Rhine wine from the year 188? is also placed. This wine was distributed by the company Behn, Meyer & Co. in Singapore, founded in 1840 by two Hamburg merchants, Theodor August Behn and Valentin Lorenz Meyer. The company initially traded in tropical fruits and other products, such as coconut oil, tobacco, copra, pepper, camphor and rattan, etc., before later expanding into other areas. This bottle can also be seen in one other photo of a total of five similar still lifes. It is quite possible that these photographs were commissioned by this company. This is an earlier print which does not bear Lambert's name, stamp or number, which later prints often do have. – Traces of previous mounting on the verso, slightly buckled and light crease marks, otherwise a strong and very good print.Lit.: Joachim K. Brüchmann, Peter -- The Beatles performing at the Top Ten Club, Hamburg. 1961/printed 1980s. 4 ferrotyped gelatin silver prints. Each circa 24 x 18 cm. Each with photographer's blindstamp in lower right in the margin; each with agency label on the verso.Born in Berlin, Peter Brüchmann trained to be a photographer with the fashion and portrait photographer Lotte Söhring and subsequently completed training at the German press agency dpa. In the 1950s and 1960s he worked for well-known magazines, such as Schöner Wohnen, Stern and Bild am Sonntag. Brüchmann is primarily known for his portraits of celebrities of the movie and music industry. These photos were made during the Beatles' performance at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg in 1961. – A few light handling marks, otherwise in very good condition.Lit.: Rock Gallery. Dutch India -- Photographer: August Sachtler (c. 1839-1873). Dayak house with skull trophies, Borneo. 1870s. Albumen print. 21,5 x 27,5 cm. Mounted to board, annotated in pencil on mount verso.Among the ethnic groups of the Sarawak area in northwestern Borneo, the Dayaks were the best known. These groups practiced headhunting, which is why they attracted the interest of ethnologists early on. The skulls of killed enemies were considered trophies and status symbols, which were gladly presented in public, as seen in the photo offered here.
