THE BOWERYOne-Sheet (27" x 40.5")Fine+ on Linen United Artists, 1933Offered here is the bright and colorful stone litho one-sheet on linen featuring a dynamic image of Beery against a bright orange background. Professional conservation has fixed previous issues on this Stone Litho poster, including fold wear, separation, tiny tears, and chipping and light staining in the borders. There have been sporadic touchups and both the borders and Beery's colored outline have been airbrushed, but the poster now presents nicely. This movie was released as part of a series of "Gay '90s" films, following the success of Mae West's steamy film She Done Him Wrong (1933). The story follows two rivals, Chuck Connors (played by Wallace Beery) and Steve Brodie (played by George Raft), whose competition reaches its peak when Brodie decides to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge to get the money he needs to open a saloon bigger than Connors'. This film also marks Lucille Ball's first appearance on screen, but her role is uncredited. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPEOne Sheet (27" X 41"); Style A, First PrintingVery Fine on Linen; Artist Tom Jung 20th Century Fox, 1977With the incredible popularity of this title and constant demand for this Tom Jung poster, there were four different printings of the posters. This poster is the first printing denoted by the 77-21/0 NSS note in the lower left corner. What's more, this is a very scarce rolled copy. Note that there were "bootleg" or knock-offs of this poster, but those are known by the hair in Skywalker's belt and other tell-tales. We guarantee this to the original first printing.A poster with airbrushing in all four corners from light chipping and pinholes and some minor sporadic scattered touchups, but otherwise the poster is very clean and presentable.George Lucas' ground-breaking space opera, which defied all expectations to change the film industry forever. Inspired by Flash Gordon serials, Westerns, samurai films and World War II movies, Lucas crafted a new, hugely popular mythology in "A galaxy far, far away," while setting a new standard for visual effects. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. JOSEF JERABEK PRAGUE SMOKED GOODS FACTORY AND HAM EXPORTCzech Advertising Poster (17.75" x 24")Fine Rolled c.1910A unique and detailed advertising poster from 1910, this original vintage Czech poster was for Josof Jerbek Prague Smoked Goods Factory & Ham Export. The poster has some wear, mostly in the borders, including sporadic and scattered light crimping and creasing, staining, discoloration, some surface paper loss, tiny tears, and a pinhole in the upper border. Plus, there have been light touchups to the lower border, one going slightly into the credits. And while there are a few light horizontal creases in the image itself, this piece presents very clean and bright.Although there's little to no documentation available regarding the Josef Jerabek company promoted here, it was, apparently, an important and well-established institution as a smoked goods factory and ham exporter, as the statement "Kaiserl., Konigl., Hoflieferant" ("Imperial, Regal, Purveyor to the Court") indicates. Regardless of its background, the 1910 Czech stone litho poster offered here is a marvel of turn-of-the-century design, with an image of a "modern" airship (similar in appearance to the Italian military aircraft that would be used as bombers to fight World War I) flying high over the factory. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. CARAVAN OF COURAGE: AN EWOK ADVENTUREInternational One-Sheet & Television Poster & Home Video Poster (27" x 41" & 25.5" x 33" & 24" x 36"); Style B One Sheets Autographed by Drew Struzan & by Kazuhiko Sano (Beckett COA.). Very Fine+ Rolled 20th Century Fox & ABC & MGM/UA, 1984 & 1990For fans of The Ewok Adventure, this lot not only has all release formats represented, but with some very notable extras. Included in this rolled pack of three posters is the International Style B one-sheet poster autographed and dated '86 by artist Drew Struzan, the Television poster autographed by artist Kazuhiko Sano and finally the Home Video poster also with artwork by Sano. The one-sheet has tape residue on the verso in all four corners and an additional one upper center that does not bleed through. The TV poster has some light minor corner crimping on the lower corners. And the home video poster has wear in the upper and lower areas, a tiny tear in the upper center edge which has been backed with archival tape, and also has light scratches to all four corners with some slight crimping in the lower left corner. All three posters have scattered creasing, but all display beautifully. The autographs are authenticated and include an additional COA from Beckett Authentication Services. In 1978, Star Wars was allowed to be produced for television which resulted in the creation of the Star Wars Holiday Special. This project brought some embarrassment to George Lucas, who then took greater control over the Ewoks TV project. Initially, it was planned as a half-hour special but was eventually expanded to a two-hour movie of the week after ABC showed interest. The movie was also released for a limited international theatrical run and was retitled as Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. ECKSTEIN NO. 5 CIGARETTESGerman Advertising Poster (33" x 47")Fine Folded C.1930sA historic circa 1930s vintage German art deco advertising poster for Eckstein No. 5 cigarettes that puts the product front and center. The brand itself, which was always unfiltered, had been manufactured since 1854 and was discontinued in August of 2015, making it one of the oldest German brands. This bright poster has had light restoration work to fold wear and minor upper and lower cross-fold separations. There is also sporadic edge and fold wear, including crimping tiny tears, and some tanning. Another perfect poster candidate for linen backing. If you were a smoker in Germany between the years 1854 and 2015, there's a fair chance that you smoked Eckstein No. 5 cigarettes at one time or another. The brand was founded by German Jewish tobacco maker Abraham M. Eckstein in Gottingen in 1854. Eckstein's cigarettes were known for being unfiltered, which became less and less common after the broad availability of a machine developed in Great Britain that manufactured filter tip cigarettes and the promotion of the filter's health benefits beginning in the 1960s. The text on this poster, "Rund, dick, ohne Mundstuck," advertises the benefits of this brand, stating them to be "Round, thick, filterless ("without tips"). Although the poster is undated, the graphics and the price of 3 1/3 pfenning suggest that the poster is likely circa the 1930s.This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACKOne-Sheet (27.25" x 41"); Style AVery Fine+ on Linen; Artist Roger Kastel 20th Century Fox, 1980Instantly recognizable for its stark imagery and swirling colors, this poster goes by a particular style name. Known as the "Gone With The Wind Style" due to the romantic embrace of Han and Leia dead center, similar to the epic pose of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, this poster by Roger Kastel is a throwback to Hollywood spectacle.Aside from some unseen light fold touchups, this poster is otherwise in mint condition on linen. The stunning sequel to Star Wars, directed by veteran helmer Irvin Kershner. Widely considered to be the best episode in the saga, it benefitted hugely from bringing in screenwriter Leigh Brackett (The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo) to co-write with Lawrence Kasdan, and also for its unforgettable final twist. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
THE GOONIESOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Drew Struzan Warner Bros., 1985Perfectly capturing the essence of what it is to be a goonie, this Drew Struzan "hanging" style poster has become synonymous with the movie for a reason. This poster has some slight wear along the fold lines, especially on the upper vertical and horizontal folds, including wrinkling and creasing, as well as a small smudge in the upper and lower right-side border. There's also scattered creasing, two light extra horizontal bends above and below the center horizontal fold, and pinholes, two left and three right, in the upper corner borders. One hole in each side has a minor pin pull.Combining the talents of Richard Donner (director), Chris Columbus (writer), and Steven Spielberg (story), The Goonies is a kids' adventure film that hasn't aged a day, featuring pirate treasure, deadly traps, and dangerous criminals. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MANLobby Cards (2) (11" x 14")Fine Universal, 1943Here are two exceptional lobby cards, one featuring the Wolf Man in full Jack Pierce-applied make-up, the other spotlighting Talbot and Maleva the Gypsy Woman (Maria Ouspenskaya) as well as Lugosi's Monster. The Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf Man feature card has light smudges to the left border, small closed-edge tears, and soft corners, with minor surface restoration to the darkened area visible in raking light. The other card has multiple pinholes, paper loss, and a tear near the upper border with paper tape repair on the verso. In the movie, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), the lab-created creature battles the supernatural beast-man. Bela Lugosi plays the Monster, a role he had previously turned down in 1931, and Lon Chaney, Jr. plays the lycanthrope Larry Talbot, which he had created in 1941's The Wolf Man. This film was the first time that a larger Universal "monsterverse" was hinted at. Although the public's reception to the movie was lukewarm, Universal decided to create other monster pairings, which eventually led to the franchise's end in 1948 with the release of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Today, however, fans have largely changed their opinion of Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Even though it was deliberately made for a younger audience than the 1930s films, it is now considered a fitting addition to the proud history of Universal's monsters. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. THE WARRIORSAustralian One-Sheet (26.75" x 40")Very Fine Folded Paramount, 1979The fantastic poster image for Walter Hill's The Warriors has become as much of a cult classic as the film itself in that it features many memorable gangs from the film, including The Van Courtlandt Rangers, The Punks, The Lizzies, The Baseball Furies, and of course The Warriors. This is a folded version of the Australian one-sheet.A poster with an image in terrific condition with only some light extra folding alongside some of the regular folds and a slight bit of tanning in the upper and lower white areas that can only be seen from close-ups. Otherwise, the poster is very presentable. Drawing parallels to Greek Themes, this Walter Hill film about a gang that must travel thirty miles to make it home after being framed for murder has achieved cult status over the years for its memorable depiction of colorful gangs and unique approach to portraying events from the street gang's point of view. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. THE VIGILANTES ARE COMINGOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- on Linen Republic, 1936The very first in a touted twelve-episode 1930s Western serial called The Vigilantes Are Coming from Republic, this poster is for Episode 1 titled "The Eagle Strikes". This poster on linen has minor restoration to previous issues, including fear wear with some light separation and slight chipping, especially along the vertical fold and all three cross-fold center points. The poster does have some very light sporadic smudging in the borders and the lower left background next to the credits, but otherwise, it presents beautifully. The third of sixty serials made by Republic Pictures, this one featured B-Western star Robert Livingston as the masked fighter "The Eagle," a man who assembles a group of vigilantes to stop the Russian Cossacks. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. THE THIRD MANOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- on Linen Selznick, R- 1954This 1954 reissue of The Third Man one-sheet goes with a more barren style featuring less color and more portrait detail and uses the black and white imagery seen on the press book cover to add mystery. While very clean, still evident on this poster on linen are pinholes in the corners, as well as light tape residue in the upper corners and an extra vertical fold.A British film noir, The Third Man is considered one of the greatest films ever. SHADOWSOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); Style AFine+ Folded Preferred Pictures, 1922This gorgeous style A stone litho not only features Lon Chaney in a role that contributed to his being labeled as "The Man of a Thousand Faces."Unrestored, this outstanding style A stone litho one sheet is likely the only surviving one sheet from this movie. The poster has light edge and fold wear, a few micro-tears and chips in the borders, slight fold separation, and thin dust shadows. There are a few strips of archival tape on the verso.Lon Chaney demonstrates his remarkable skill with character makeup in this film, in which he transforms himself into a humble, stoop-shouldered Chinese laundryman named Yen Sin. This was his most elaborate make-up to date - taking more than two hours to apply - one that would only be surpassed in the next year when he created the look of Quasimodo, the deformed bellringer in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). The film opened to rave reviews by critics, who hailed it as Chaney's best performance of his career. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOTInsert & Snipe (14" x 36")Very Fine on Paper Warner Bros., 1944A spectacular insert on paper featuring a beautiful image of the two stars demonstrating the chemistry for which they were famous, complete with a credit snipe that emphasizes the director's name, Howard Hawks. With a few light creases, this insert has had much of the white background airbrushed, not including in the upper portion beyond the top of Bogart's name. There are only sporadic touch-ups in the image itself. It now presents perfectly. The additional snipe has slight wear to the upper and right side edges, including tiny tears, small chips, and light crimping. Lauren Bacall was only 19 when she appeared in this role based on an Ernest Hemingway novel, opposite the 44-year-old and divorced Bogart twice. Nevertheless, the pair fell in love during the production of this film and married as soon as Bogart secured a divorce from his third wife, Mayo Methot, a union that lasted until he died in 1957. Critical response to the film was largely unflattering, comparing the picture unfavorably to Bogart's earlier film, Casablanca (1942), and criticizing it for its divergence from Hemingway's story. NIGHT TO REMEMBER, ABritish Three Sheet (40" x 79")Fine+ Folded Rank, 1959This clean, bright 3 sheet's panels are glued together, and it exhibits minor fold wear, including some chipping in the upper and cross folds, light smudging in the white borders, and sporadic creasing. Walter Lord's best-selling 1955 book, A Night to Remember, served as the basis for the depiction of Titanic's last tragic night and the events leading up to it. To ensure accuracy and attention to detail, original blueprints were employed in the creation of the sets, and numerous survivors of the disaster, including the ship's Fourth Officer, served as technical consultants. At the time of its production, the film was the most expensive ever made in the UK, with a budget of £600,000. Despite this, the result is a work of art that is highly acclaimed for its precision and authenticity. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. DONALD DUCK IN LION AROUNDOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded RKO, 1950 This Technicolor masterpiece is well represented here by a beautiful one sheet capturing the moment in which Donald realizes that Louie is a real mountain lion and not his disguised nephews, and that his violent temper has once again gotten him in big trouble. This poster has mostly minor issues to lower areas, including light fold and edge wear and slight lower cross-fold separation. DR. STRANGELOVE OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMBHalf Sheet (22" x 28")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Tomi Ungerer Columbia, 1964In staying true to the black comedy tone of the classic Stanley Kubrick/Peter Sellers outing, this poster art for Dr. Strangelove from Tomi Ungerer really captures the satirical essence of the film in this more condensed half sheet format. This colorful folded half sheet has been stored rolled. The eleventh James Bond thriller was intended to be For Your Eyes Only until Star Wars exploded onto screens. The producers decided they needed to capitalize on the science fiction space elements. LA STRADAItalian 4-Fogli (55" x 78")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Enrico De Seta Paramount, 1954There are small mirrored paper lifts in the background of the upper section, a few ink date stamps in the background on the right, a stamp in the upper left corner, and some staining and smudging in the borders. There are also small chips along the edges, pinholes in the background and borders as well as a few nail holes in the borders, some light fold separation at the end of the upper left horizontal fold, and soft surface rippling. The Italian maestro of the movies, Federico Fellini, put everything into this divisive drama with an ardor above and beyond that of his other works. As the famed director described, "This film is a complete catalog of my entire mythological world, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever." The story is so personal that he based the protagonist entirely on his wife and lead actress, Giulietta Masina. Winning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and over fifty international awards, La Strada was as much a resounding success in America as it was a source of controversy in Italy. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th.
