Herbal.- [A lytel herball of the properties of herbes newly amended and corrected, with certayne addiciions at the ende of the boke [as] appoynted in the almanacke, made in M.D.L. the xii. day of February by A. Askham.], black letter, occasional early ink marginalia, early ink recipe for 'A medsin for ye tothe ache' to blank verso of K7, lacking A1-3 (including title), A8, and blank K8, A4 torn and repaired with loss of text to upper corner, A5 margins repaired on 3 sides, with loss of several letters, a few ff. with marginal repairs / mounted on stubs, closely trimmed at head, occasionally just touching text, water-stained, some spotting or soiling, mostly light browned, antique style calf, spine in compartments and with burgundy leather label, [Henrey 184; STC 13175.13], 8vo, [In Fletestrete at the signe of the George nexte to Saynte Dunstones Churche by Wyllyam Powell], [12th March, 1550].⁂ Exceedingly rare. We locate a BL copy, and ESTC records copies at the Royal College of Surgeons, the Wellcome (lacking title) and Yale (defective). Medieval in origin this herbal was first published by Richard Banckes in 1525, and as a result is sometimes referred to as 'Banckes' Herbal'. 'Askham's name on the title page refers to the almanac, and he may have had nothing to do with the editing of this edition' (ESTC).

The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Newly Translated out of the Original Greek, damp-staining to head of final few gatherings, [Wing B2292], by the Assignes of John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1675, together 2 works in 1 vol., double-column, ruled in red, 18th century ink inscriptions of members of the Kent family where front free endpaper endpaper peeled away, extensive pencil notes to front free endpaper and 3A4 (final blank), some leaves trimmed close at foot, with very occasional loss to ruled border or a word of text, the odd marginal chip or short tear, causing loss to a few words of 2Y2, some browning and light soiling, contemporary black morocco sombre binding, tooled in blind and decorated with tulip heads, leafy sprays and vases with sprays of flowers, remains of some gilt to centre and corner pieces (brighter to lower cover), rubbed at joints and extremities, 8vo.
The Irish Rebellion of 1641.- Temple (Sir John) The Irish Rebellion: or an History of the Beginnings and first Progresse of The Generall Rebellion...Together with the Barbarous Cruelties and Bloody Massacres which ensued thereupon, first edition, title within double-rule border, woodcut initials and headpieces, occasional light marginal marking or finger-soiling, the odd spot, but a good copy generally, contemporary calf, a few light stains, hinges and joints strengthened and repaired, [Wing T627], 4to, by R. White, 1646.⁂ First edition of this important contemporary history that did much to inflame English opinion against the Irish.Provenance: Fairfax of Cameron; Fox Pointe Collection (bookplates).

With his apologie for his voyage to Guiana, 4 parts in 1, first edition, engraved portrait frontispiece by Robert Vaughan, title within woodcut typographic border, woodcut head-pieces, 4 advertisement ff. (bound after To the Reader), G8 blank, some ff. on stubs, portrait with small chip to lower blank corner and neatly laid down, final 2 advertisement ff. trimmed at foot, touching text, small worm trace / holes to upper inner corner in places, mostly marginal, but very occasionally just touching part of a letter or a rule, some repaired, occasional spotting or light staining, lightly browned, 20th century sheep, rubbed and scuffed, particularly the spine, [Pforzheimer 822; Wing R170], small 8vo, By T. W. for Humphrey Moseley and are to be sold at the Princes Armes in St. Pauls Church-yard, 1650.⁂ The first appearance of Raleigh's account of his second voyage to Guiana, which was an attempt to excuse his final failure. It includes one of the earliest appearances of the word 'tobacco' on pp. 24 (spelt 'tobaccho') & 34.

Taylor, 1719.
Binding.- Garter Arms.- Book of Common Prayer (The), title printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece, light offsetting, occasional light toning to text, 3 or 4 ff. with tears to lower margins straying into text, ink inscription "Dr. Wilmot October 25th 1755" to endpaper followed by other 18th century gift inscriptions, contemporary blue morocco, roll borders to covers with crown corner pieces surrounding the arms of the Order of the Garter, spine gilt in compartments, neat repairs to spine ends and upper joints, rubbing to extremities, some light marking to covers, g.e., folio, Thomas Baskett, 1754.⁂ Dr. Wilmot is likely Dr Richard Wilmot (1703-1772), he studied at St. John's Cambridge, took his DD in 1744 and was appointed to the ninth stall in St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1748. As a Cannon of the Garter chapel it seems probable that Wilmot was presented the present work as a gift.

Bell (John, editor).- Bell's Edition. The Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill, 106 vol. only (of 109, lacking vol. 49 (Prior vol. 3), 52 (Swift vol. 1) and vol. 77 (Pope vol. 2), engraved titles and portraits, uniform contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and green morocco labels, some light rubbing to spines but a near-fine set generally, housed in two original travelling cases resembling tree calf folios volumes stacked dos-a-dos, interiors with marbled paper, felt and original printed labels, spines with lettered red morocco label and sliding compartments concealing hidden locking mechanism (one spine moving, the other fixed in place), one case lid chipped at lip, rubbing and surface wear to cases, folio, 1780-84.⁂ A remarkable set complete with the rare travelling cases that were offered for sale with the 1784 edition. We can trace only one other like example of these cases at auction.
Dugdale (Sir William) Monasticon Anglicanum, A History of the Abbies and other Monasteries...in England and Wales, 6 vol. in 8, one of 50 large paper copies, half-titles, engraved additional pictorial titles, letterpress titles in red and black, list of subscribers in vol.1, 242 engraved plates (as often without the duplicate plate of the Benedictine nun at p.451 in vol.2), of which 51 double-page, plates with some spotting or foxing and occasional water-staining (mostly marginal and in vol.1), some light browning, elsewhere occasional spotting, marbled endpapers, inner gilt dentelles, handsome contemporary dark blue crushed morocco, richly gilt, spines in compartments and profusely decorated with floral and foliage tooling, covers with wide floral & foliage and filet borders, some corners worn, a few scuffs, rubbed, g.e., folio, 1817-1830.⁂ An attractive set of this greatly expanded edition by John Paley, Sir Henry Ellis and the Rev. Bulkeley Bandinel, which draws on records from the Cottonian Collection and the Tower of London.
Austen (Jane) Northanger Abbey: and Persuasion. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice", Mansfield-Park &c. With a Biographical Notice of the Author, 4 vol., first edition, lacking final 2 blanks in vol.4, neat contemporary ink ownership inscriptions to each front pastedown, some light foxing or spotting to pages (worse to titles), but otherwise a very clean set internally, late 19th century half calf, spines gilt with red morocco spine labels, corners very lightly bumped and joints very lightly rubbed, overall a very attractive set, [Gilson A9], 12mo, John Murray, 1818.⁂ First edition of both novels, published posthumously. Northanger Abbey, a Gothic novel parody, had been drafted fifteen years earlier under a working title of 'Susan', but was abandoned when another novel of the same name appeared in 1809. Persuasion was completed by Austen in the summer of 1816, shortly before she was forced to stop writing due to ill-health.

Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) Lord Randolph Churchill, 2 vol., first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to Frederick Smith, 1st Baron Colwyn dated 13 Jan. 1906 to vol. 1 endpaper, plates, foxing, note on Chancellor of the Exchequer letterhead loosely inserted, Colwyn bookplate to front pastedown, original red cloth, spines faded, spines a little frayed at head, some bumping to foot of spines and corners, light rubbing, uncut, [Woods A8a], 8vo, 1906.⁂ An excellent association copy, inscribed by Churchill in the final days of the 1906 election. Frederick Smith (1859-1946) was a banker, industrialist and influential Liberal figure in Manchester politics. The 1906 elections was Churchill's first as a Liberal and saw him successfully contest the Manchester North West seat. As a significant player in the local political arena, it seems likely that Smith would have assisted Churchill in his campaigning and that the present work was a gift of thanks from the author.
Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) Marlborough. His Life and Times, vol. 3 only (of 4), [one of 155 copies], signed presentation inscription from the author to Jozef Beck dated November 1936 to endpaper, plates, some light damp mottling to endpapers and early ff., original orange morocco, very light sunning to spine, damp mottling covers rubbing to extremities, t.e.g., others uncut, [Wood A40a], 8vo, 1936.⁂ Inscribed to Jozef Beck (1894-1944) Polish military officer and statesman. Beck and Churchill met on several occasions as both attempted to warn of the Nazi treat. Beck was instrumental in persuading France and Britain to join Poland in a military alliance in the spring of 1939.
Brunschwig (Hieronymus) A most excellent and perfecte homish apothecarye or homely physick booke for all the grefes and diseases of the bodye, first edition in English, translated by John Hollybush, collation: a-g6 h4, lacking final blank leaf, printed in black letter with headlines and some headings in italics and side-notes in roman, large woodcut device on title, some worming throughout, getting heavier towards end, upper corner of g4 defective, affecting pagination, some light browning, light water-stain to upper corners, modern blind-stamped goatskin, [STC 13433], folio, Cologne, by Arnold Birckman, 1561.⁂ Often bound with part 2 of William Turner's A New Herbal [STC 24365]. Includes several very early suggestions for the use of medical cannabis ('hempsede') - "If a man haue a sounding or piping in his eares / the same cometh somtyme of a hote slymy fylthynesse / or of a hote slymy moystnesse. He that is so diseased / ought to take pilles de iera picra / & then put oyle of Hempsede warme into his eares / mixt wt a litle vinegre / after yt let him leape vpon hys one legge / vpon that syde / where the disease is / than let hym bowe doune ye eare of that syde / if happely any moysture or fylth would issue out."A pencil note on front pastedown reads "Bound in my own goat skin bred at Ivel House, Ilchester, Somerset, 1947."Provenance: "TBS" (old ink monogram at foot of title).
Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) The Second World War, 6 vol., first edition, one of 100 sets specially-bound for presentation, maps, plans and illustrations, many folding (in vol.6 2 a little frayed at fore-edge, 1 torn), printed author's note tipped into vol. 1, light spotting, some occasional light creasing, original black pebble-grain morocco, spines lettered in gilt, some light spotting and faint marking but a very good set overall, t.e.g., [Woods A123(b)], 8vo, 1948-54.⁂ One of the great Churchill rarities, specially-bound by the publisher for presentation.
Declaration of the Independent State of Israel.- Iton Rishmi, Official Gazette of Israel, no.1, bifolium, text in Hebrew, light creasing, some chipping to extremities and corners, light spotting, faint toning, tall 8vo, Tel Aviv, 1948.⁂ The first printing of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. The declaration names all of the 37 members of the Provision Government, headed by David Ben-Gurion. It also contains the annulment of the infamous 1937 White Paper restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine.
Opening speeches of the Auschwitz Museum in 1947.- Opieka nad Oświęcimiem, only edition, 16pp., illustrations, including a view of the entrance to the camp and an aerial map of Auschwitz, original wrappers, corners and extremities very lightly rubbed, light fading to spine but overall a very excellent copy, 8vo, Kraków, 1948.⁂ A rare and important document, marking the transition from Auschwitz as a concentration camp to its status as a museum. The publication follows the opening ceremony of the Auschwitz museum on June 14, 1947, the official date on which the Government of the Republic of Poland recognized the Auschwitz camp as a museum site. The pamphlet includes transcripts of speeches and letters from senior Polish government officials and survivors on the opening day in a special ceremony held on the day. Among the people appearing are Ryszard Stankowski, a former prisoner in Auschwitz who was a survivor at the end of the war having been on the death row, Dr. Mazimilion Kessler, Chief Executive Officer of the Warsaw Handloby Bank, Dr. Boleslav Rozmarinowicz, President of the Polish Guilds, and Dr. Kazimierz Rudnicki, Prosecutor of the Court of Appeal in Krakow, amongst others.

Ballard (J. G.) Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan, first edition, one of 250 copies, light creasing to head, short split to head of spine, lower cover with short nicks and creasing to head, light marginal toning, 4to, Brighton, Unicorn Bookshop, 1968.⁂ Scarce first edition of Ballard's short story satirising the rise of the new "media politicians" embodied by Reagan, then Governor of California. The publication of the pamphlet led to a prosecution on the grounds of obscenity for the Unicorn Bookshop, ultimately forcing the owner to close.
Ballard (J. G.) Crash, first edition, original boards, slight shelf-lean, light vertical crease to spine, dust-jacket, minor chipping and some rubbing to spine head and corner tips, short nick to head of rear panel, some lifting to laminate (as often), but an excellent example generally without the usual fading to spine, 8vo, 1973.⁂ Ballard's superb exploration of car-crash sexual fetishism. Initially controversial, Crash is now regarded as a landmark work of postmodern fiction.
Dahl (Roald) The BFG, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author "To Dermot Love Roald Dahl" and additionally signed by the illustrator, dated "Dec. 1982" both to front free endpaper, illustrations by Quentin Blake, light marginal toning, original boards, dust-jacket, light sunning to spine, minor chipping and light creasing to head of spine and corner tips, a sharp and excellent example overall, 8vo, 1982.⁂ An inscribed copy of one of Dahl's most popular and enduring works. Inscribed copies of Dahl's later works are rare, especially so signed by both author and illustrator.

Milne from the author" on half-title, hinges weak throughout with first gathering working loose, occasional light foxing, light marking to endpapers, original cloth, spine lightly browned, extremities a little bumped and spine ends fraying slightly, covers lightly marked, still overall a bright and excellent copy, [Kirkpatrick A1a], 8vo, 1905. ⁂ Forster's first novel, we can trace only one other inscribed copy for almost 30 years.Published when Forster was only 26 years old, Where Angels Fear to Tread immediately established the author as a writer of note and its central theme, of the snobbery and hypocrisy of the English middle class, one that would preoccupy him for much of his career.
