[Shakespeare (William)] The Tempest [and] The two Gentlemen of Verona, from the Second Folio, pp.1-38, double-column, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, trimmed, occasionally affecting headline and page numbers, tiny hole to A4, affecting a letter or two of text, some light spotting and minor soiling, The two Gentlemen of Verona with very occasional early ink corrections, modern green morocco, gilt, folio (295 x 205mm.), [Printed by Thomas Cotes], [1632].⁂ Two of Shakespeare's great plays as they appeared consecutively to open the Second Folio, a juxtaposition between one of the Bard's earliest (The Two Gentlemen of Verona, c.1589-93) and what some believe to be the last play he wrote alone (The Tempest, c.1610-11).

Askham.], black letter, occasional early ink marginalia, early ink recipe for 'A medsin for ye tothe ache' to blank verso of K7, lacking A1-3 (including title), A8, and blank K8, A4 torn and repaired with loss of text to upper corner, A5 margins repaired on 3 sides, with loss of several letters, a few ff. with marginal repairs / mounted on stubs, closely trimmed at head, occasionally just touching text, water-stained, some spotting or soiling, mostly light browned, antique style calf, spine in compartments and with burgundy leather label, [Henrey 184; STC 13175.13], 8vo, [In Fletestrete at the signe of the George nexte to Saynte Dunstones Churche by Wyllyam Powell], [12th March, 1550].⁂ Exceedingly rare. We locate a BL copy, and ESTC records copies at the Royal College of Surgeons, the Wellcome (lacking title) and Yale (defective). Medieval in origin this herbal was first published by Richard Banckes in 1525, and as a result is sometimes referred to as 'Banckes' Herbal'. 'Askham's name on the title page refers to the almanac, and he may have had nothing to do with the editing of this edition' (ESTC).

Binding.- Garter Arms.- Book of Common Prayer (The), title printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece, light offsetting, occasional light toning to text, 3 or 4 ff. with tears to lower margins straying into text, ink inscription "Dr. Wilmot October 25th 1755" to endpaper followed by other 18th century gift inscriptions, contemporary blue morocco, roll borders to covers with crown corner pieces surrounding the arms of the Order of the Garter, spine gilt in compartments, neat repairs to spine ends and upper joints, rubbing to extremities, some light marking to covers, g.e., folio, Thomas Baskett, 1754.⁂ Dr. Wilmot is likely Dr Richard Wilmot (1703-1772), he studied at St. John's Cambridge, took his DD in 1744 and was appointed to the ninth stall in St. George's Chapel, Windsor in 1748. As a Cannon of the Garter chapel it seems probable that Wilmot was presented the present work as a gift.

The Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill, 106 vol. only (of 109, lacking vol. 49 (Prior vol. 3), 52 (Swift vol. 1) and vol. 77 (Pope vol. 2), engraved titles and portraits, uniform contemporary polished calf, spines gilt in compartments with red and green morocco labels, some light rubbing to spines but a near-fine set generally, housed in two original travelling cases resembling tree calf folios volumes stacked dos-a-dos, interiors with marbled paper, felt and original printed labels, spines with lettered red morocco label and sliding compartments concealing hidden locking mechanism (one spine moving, the other fixed in place), one case lid chipped at lip, rubbing and surface wear to cases, folio, 1780-84.⁂ A remarkable set complete with the rare travelling cases that were offered for sale with the 1784 edition. We can trace only one other like example of these cases at auction.

Northanger Abbey, a Gothic novel parody, had been drafted fifteen years earlier under a working title of 'Susan', but was abandoned when another novel of the same name appeared in 1809. Persuasion was completed by Austen in the summer of 1816, shortly before she was forced to stop writing due to ill-health.

Churchill (Sir Winston Spencer) Lord Randolph Churchill, 2 vol., first edition, signed presentation inscription from the author to Frederick Smith, 1st Baron Colwyn dated 13 Jan. 1906 to vol. 1 endpaper, plates, foxing, note on Chancellor of the Exchequer letterhead loosely inserted, Colwyn bookplate to front pastedown, original red cloth, spines faded, spines a little frayed at head, some bumping to foot of spines and corners, light rubbing, uncut, [Woods A8a], 8vo, 1906.⁂ An excellent association copy, inscribed by Churchill in the final days of the 1906 election. Frederick Smith (1859-1946) was a banker, industrialist and influential Liberal figure in Manchester politics. The 1906 elections was Churchill's first as a Liberal and saw him successfully contest the Manchester North West seat. As a significant player in the local political arena, it seems likely that Smith would have assisted Churchill in his campaigning and that the present work was a gift of thanks from the author.

Opening speeches of the Auschwitz Museum in 1947.- Opieka nad Oświęcimiem, only edition, 16pp., illustrations, including a view of the entrance to the camp and an aerial map of Auschwitz, original wrappers, corners and extremities very lightly rubbed, light fading to spine but overall a very excellent copy, 8vo, Kraków, 1948.⁂ A rare and important document, marking the transition from Auschwitz as a concentration camp to its status as a museum. The publication follows the opening ceremony of the Auschwitz museum on June 14, 1947, the official date on which the Government of the Republic of Poland recognized the Auschwitz camp as a museum site. The pamphlet includes transcripts of speeches and letters from senior Polish government officials and survivors on the opening day in a special ceremony held on the day. Among the people appearing are Ryszard Stankowski, a former prisoner in Auschwitz who was a survivor at the end of the war having been on the death row, Dr. Mazimilion Kessler, Chief Executive Officer of the Warsaw Handloby Bank, Dr. Boleslav Rozmarinowicz, President of the Polish Guilds, and Dr. Kazimierz Rudnicki, Prosecutor of the Court of Appeal in Krakow, amongst others.
