See you soon, my dear, what a joy for me I send you all my love and kisses for you, your Monet who loves you´) and in a postscript added in the evening the artist further adds ´Me voici arrive a Christiana ou je suis au Grand Hotel. Sans doute jusqu´a dimanche. Demain a lieu la promenade en bateau. Baisers a tous´ (Translation: ´I have arrived in Christiana where I am staying at the Grand Hotel. Probably until Sunday. Tomorrow is the boat trip. Kisses to all´). Touring the country with his stepson Jacques Hoschedé, who lived in Christiania, he was awestruck but initially frustrated in his search for good subjects amid the snow. Despite this discontent, Monet painted twenty-nine Norwegian scenes during his two-month stay.

An excellent A.L.S., Octave Mirbeau, three pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Claude Monet, in French. Mirbeau commences his letter by thanking Monet a thousand times for a gift (possibly a painting?) and a portrait photograph, remarking ´Les oliviers que je connaissais sont superbes de lumière en dessous, et je me retrouve là-bas, sous leurs branches que j´aime tant. Et quant à votre photographie, qui m´a été aussi une surprise exquise, c´est un chef d´oeuvre. Vous etes, vous tout entier, male, puissant, avec votre oeil qui dompte le soleil.....´ (Translation: ´The olive trees that I knew are superb in the light below, and I find myself there, under their branches that I love so much. And as for your photograph, which was also an exquisite surprise for me, it is a masterpiece. You are, all of you, male, powerful, with your eye taming the sun...´) and continues by trying to lift his friend´s spirits, ´Maintenant, parlons de vous en peu. Est-ce que vraiment vous allez devenir fou, vous? Et vous laisser abattre comme un vulgaire bonhomme? Comment, jamais vous n´avez été en possession de votre art, comme maintenant, et parce que, cette année, le temps vous a contrarié, vous allez tout envoyer promener! Nom d´un chien, mais c´est enrageant, ce qui vous prend; et cette énergie dont vous avez donné tant de preuves, où donc est-elle maintenant?´ (Translation: ´Now, let's talk about you for a bit. Are you really going to go mad? And let yourself be brought down like a common man? How can you, when you have never been in possession of your art like you are now, and because the weather has upset you this year, you are going to throw it all away! You will find it again in time; and you will produce admirable masterpieces. Damn it, it's infuriating, what's got into you; and that energy of which you have given so much proof, where is it now?´), further writing ´Voulez-vous que je vous dise, mon ami?.......Mais, écoutez-moi bien, il y a aussi une cause purement physique;........les lubies - passagères d´ailleurs - prennent l´homme le mieux trempé. Mais cést pas grave. Il faut vous secouer; et la pire des choses pour vous, est de rester couché des journées entières, comme vous me dites. Il faut secouer cela, rigoureusement. Mirbeau encourages Monet to write to him soon and let him know that he is feeling better, and also writes of his own current work, ´Mon roman se poursuit; le temps ne me derange guère, et cést stupide ce que je fais. Mais je crois que je deviens philosophe. Je regrette de ne pas faire mieux; mais puisque je ne peux pas, je me fais à la place, une raison. Vous verrez ca bientot, en effet; ce que je vous demanderai, ce sera de ne pas trop me blaguer. Il y avait un péril très grand dans mon livre, c´etait de tomber dans l´enfantillage. Or j´y suis tombé, naturellement´ (Translation: ´My novel is continuing; time doesn't bother me much, and what I'm doing is stupid. But I think I'm becoming philosophical. I regret not doing better; but since I can't, I'll make myself a reason instead. You'll see that soon enough; what I'll ask of you is not to joke too much with me. There was a very great danger in my book, which was to fall into childishness. Well, I fell into it, naturally´) and concludes his letter by again writing with positivity, ´Ce que je vous dis est la vérité pure. Mde. Hoschedé a du vous le dire certainement. Le seul danger, c´est de vous laisser aller à des découragements, que vous n´avez pas le droit d´avoir. Voyons, quand venez-vous? Toute de suite, hein! Je vous embrasse tendrement; me femme qui vient de lire ma lettre, dit qu´elle est illisible, et écrite betement; mais, tout de meme, elle l´approuve. Merci encore, mon cher ami, de votre superbe et trop magnifique don, merci de votre photographie. Et méditez ce que je vous raconte dans ma lettre, qui est, en effet, stupidement tournée, mais qui est, tout de meme, un che f´oeuvre de raison´ (Translation: ´What I'm telling you is the absolute truth. Mrs Hoschedé must have told you that. The only danger is that you will become discouraged, which you have no right to do. Come on, when are you coming? Right away, eh! I send you my warmest regards; my wife, who has just read my letter, says it is illegible and badly written, but she approves it all the same. Thank you again, my dear friend, for your superb and magnificent gift, thank you for your photograph. And meditate on what I tell you in my letter, which is, indeed, stupidly worded, but which is, all the same, a masterpiece of reason´). A letter of excellent content and association from Mirbeau to Monet, the artist whom he sang the praises of. VGMirbeau´s mention of Napoleon in the present letter is evidently a reference to Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929) French Prime Minister 1906-09, 1917-20. Clemenceau was a long-time friend and supporter of the impressionist painter, writing a short biography on the artist, and was also instrumental in persuading Monet to have a cataract operation in 1923.The source of Monet´s apparent depression may well have been the French writer and art critic Albert Wolff (1825-1891), mentioned in the present letter. Wolff strongly opposed Impressionism and an 1876 Impressionist Exhibition (at which Monet displayed eighteen paintings).
NORTH LORD: (1732-1792) British Prime Minister 1770-82. North led Great Britain through most of the American War of Independence. A.L.S., with his initial N, one page, small 4to, n.p., n.d., to a gentleman. North writes a somewhat hasty letter, sending his correspondent a letter (no longer present) from the King ´as it contains an answer to part of the letter you sent me yestarday´, and concluding by stating ´I do not expect a conclusion in Europe´. ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS: A good, small selection of three signed colour 8 x 10 photographs by various Academy Award winners for Best Supporting Actor from 2002 onwards comprising Chris Cooper (for his performance as John laroche in Adaptation, 2002), Christoph Waltz (for his performance as SS Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, 2009, and again for his performance as Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained, 2012), and J. K. Simmons (for his performance as Terence Fletcher in Whiplash, 2014). Each of the images depict the actors holding their Oscar statuettes. All are boldly signed in blue inks with their names alone to light areas of the images. ROUSSELET DE CHATEAURENAULT FRANCOIS LOUIS: (1637-1716) French Vice Admiral and Marshal of France who saw action in the Franco-Spanish War, the Nine Years´ War and the War of the Spanish Succession. An excellent A.L.S., Chateaurenault, four pages, small 4to, n.p. (Vigo Bay), n.d. (October 1702), to a gentleman, in French. The Vice Admiral commences his letter by stating ´Mr de Gastines Commissaire general ordonnateur a la suite des vaisseaux que j'ai l'honneur de commander doit avoir receu presentement les soixante mil ecus que la Reyne a ordonne pour leur subistance et je vous supplie d´en faire le versement a sa Majeste´ (Translation: ´Mr. de Gastines, Commissioner General, responsible for the ships that I have the honor of commanding, must have now received the sixty thousand crowns that the Queen ordered for their maintenance and I beg you to pay it to Her Majesty´) and continues to send news and intelligence of the current situation, ´Nous sommes icy toujours mouilles dans une tres grande inquietude de ce que les vivres que nous attendons de la Corogne ne peuvent venir icy, les vens contraires les y retenant depuis trois semaines qu´ils y sont charges. Cela est d´autant plus facheux qu´il n´y a point desperance d´avoir de pain en ce lieu ou l´annee a ete mauvaise et le pais peu abondant......Nous avons ete d´autant plus inquiets que nous avons eu l´alarme hier au soir, sur ce qu´il a paru une flote a la vue de cette terre, dans le sens qu´il nous emblait que les vens violens qui avaient regne, avoient du obliger les ennemis de depasser ce lieu quand mesme ils auroient eu dessein d´y venir. Mais apres bien de la peine que j´ai eu cette nuit et le matin, nous avons lieu de croire que c´est la flote du Bresil qu´on a vu. Il nous a paru que cette nouvelle nous devoit otter toute inquietude. Cependant nous n´avons rien neglige icy, et le travail des bateries a ete toujours son chemin, parce que ce devoit etre la surete du pais et des vaisseaux de la flote quand nous serons partis d´icy. La pluye qu´il fait presque toujours dehors nous a enpeche qu´on ait envoye......l´argent parce qu´elle se seroit entierement gastee. Presentement Mr de Larea est charge de tout Dieu mercy, mais il sera remarque qu´on n´avoit jamais espere une pareille exactitude. I do not know, Sir, whether you will have learned that the enemies have separated at Cape St. Vincent and that twenty-five of their biggest and best ships, reinforced with crew, have sailed for America, and that the rest of their army has sailed to the north-west, which is probably that of England. However, we have not neglected anything here, and the work on the batteries has continued, because it should be the safety of the country and of the ships on the water when we leave here. On the news that I had, which seemed very certain to me, that the enemies were going to America, I thought that it would be of very important service to France and Spain if the American colonies of the two Kingdoms were warned. I believe Sir that you are aware of the state of our islands, and in particular of St Christopher, which on its own would have great difficulty in maintaining the superiority of the English colony there. GAUTIER THEOPHILE: (1811-1872) French poet, dramatist, novelist, and art and literary critic. Autograph D.S., Theophile Gautier, one page, oblong 8vo, Neuilly, 28th August 1870, in French. The document is in the form of a receipt in which Gautier acknowledges having received the sum of one thousand francs from Monsieur Haro. Some light creasing and a small series of pinholes to the lower left corner, otherwise about VGMonsieur Haro was an expert in paintings with whom Gautier had collaborated by writing several notes for his sales catalogues of paintings between 1865 and 1872.
MILES VERA: (1929- ) American actress, famous for her role as Lila Crane in Alfred Hitchcock's horror film Pyscho (1960). Selection of signed 8 x 10 photographs by Miles, each of them different images of the actress, one showing her seated at a dinner table with Alfred Hitchcock, another showing her in costume as Lila Crane, two depicting her in glamorous poses (one accompanied by a Vespa scooter), and another showing her in a scene from Tarzan´s Hidden Jungle (1955), etc. All are boldly signed in black, blue or red inks with her name alone to light areas of the images. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph, the original Paramount Pictures publicity portrait dating from 1958 and depicting the young, handsome Brando in a broody head and shoulders pose. A printed label neatly affixed to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the stage door of the Chichester Festival Theatre following a performance of Sweet Bird of Youth on 17th June 2017. Together with two signed 8 x 10 photographs (one colour) by two of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominees of 2000 comprising Kate Hudson (for her performance as Penny Lane in Almost Famous) and Julie Walters (for her performance as Sandra Wilkinson in Billy Elliot). [GUERNSEY]: An original large folio (31 x 50.5 cm) printed broadside published by the Guernsey newspaper The Star on 8th May 1945, with the headline declaring The War is Over for Guernsey and further stating, in part, ´At 10-30 this morning "The Star" was officially informed by Mr. Louis Guillemette....that the war....so far as Guernsey was concerned, had ended. People of Guernsey can to-day at 3 o´clock, if they are able to do so, listen to the speech made over the British radio by Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Immediately after that hour flags can be flown in Guernsey as a sign of rejoicing´. Some extremely light age wear, a few very small tears and chips to the edges, VGFrom 30th June 1940 Guernsey, and the Channel Islands, were occupied by German troops, although seventeen thousand people (from Guernsey´s population of 41,000) were evacuated to England before the occupation began. Guernsey was very heavily fortified with German defences during World War II, out of all proportion to the island´s strategic value.
MITCHELL THOMAS: (1892-1962) American actor, Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor in 1939 for his role as Doc Boone in Stagecoach. A good, rare vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Mitchell in a head and shoulders pose in costume as Ike Howard from the American drama film Captain Eddie (1945), a biopic of the American fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker. PERON JUAN: (1895-1974) Argentine statesman who served as President of Argentina 1946-55, 1973-74. Vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Peron standing in a relaxed three-quarter length pose, with a cigarette in one hand, alongside a poster issued in memory of Eva Peron and featuring her profile portrait. Signed by Peron in blue fountain pen ink to a light area of the image and dated at Ciudad Trujillo (Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic), 12th August 1958, during the early years of Peron´s exile. HONORE V: (1778-1841) Prince of Monaco 1819-41. D.S., with his initials and a flourish, one page, oblong 8vo, L´Orangerie, 12th April 1836, in French. The manuscript document is a promissory note, ´Bon pour la somme de six cent francs payables au [Mon]sieur Beaujean fin de Novembre prochain´ (Translation: ´Good for the sum of six hundred francs payable to [Mon]sieur Beaujean at the end of November next´). With various ink annotations and official stamps etc., as well as endorsements to the verso, indicating that the monies were paid to Beaujean at Paris on 30th November 1836. All of the postcard photographs are bound together in the original presentation booklet with decorative paper wrappers, and one additional unsigned postcard photograph is included in the set, the image depicting Belyayev and Leonov seated together in half-length poses and engaged in conversation as they review some documents on the table before them. It is unusual to find such sets of postcards in their original bound form as the majority of similar signed postcard photographs which are encountered today have been separated from the booklets at their perforated edges. NADAR: (1820-1910) Gaspard-Felix Tournachon. French photographer, caricaturist and balloonist, the first person to take aerial photographs (1858). An amusing A.L.S., Na → (the signature incorporating a pictogram of a right pointing arrow, described by Nadar beneath as an ingenious type of signature, ´Signature genre ingenieux´), one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to [Paul Gavarni], in French. The photographer writes, in full, ´Que le bon Dieu vous patafiole! Voila deux fois que je vous viens voir - dont ce matin par un temps a ne pas mettre un Empereur dehors, que les chevaux griffent a chaque pas et qu´on a les pieds et le nez sans connaissance! Et j´avais justement besoin de vous voir ce matin pendant dix minutes! On me dit que vous serez rentre a midi. J´enverrai Madame Nadar avec mon serviteur pour vous expliquer la chose, ne pouvant venir moi-meme. Que le bon Dieu vous patafiole (bis)!´ (Translation: ´May the good Lord spoil you! I've been to see you twice now - including this morning in weather so bad you wouldn't want to take an Emperor out, with horses scratching at every step and your feet and nose numb! And I just needed to see you this morning for ten minutes! I am told that you will be back at midday. I will send Madame Nadar with my servant to explain things to you, as I cannot come myself. May the good Lord spoil you (again!)´). A small portion of the lower left corner has been neatly excised, and with some very light age wear, otherwise VGPaul Gavarni (1804-1866) French illustrator who shared a passion and interest with Nadar for aerial navigation. Gavarni made experiments on a large scale with a view to find the means of directing balloons, but without the success Nadar enjoyed.
GRANT CARY: (1904-1986) British-American actor, Academy Award winner. Signed and inscribed colour 10 x 8 photograph, a candid image of Grant in a smiling head and shoulders pose seated alongside a lady. Signed by Grant in black ink to a light area of the background. A.N.S., with his truncated signature Sg, in pencil, to the verso of his personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card, featuring his printed name to the centre of the recto, n.p., n.d., in Swedish. The untranslated note appears to refer to his weaknesses with God, and suggests that he is not healthy enough to return home. Accompanied by the original envelope. BERLUSCONI SILVIO: (1936-2023) Italian politician and media tycoon who served as Prime Minister of Italy 1994-95, 2001-06 & 2008-11. A complete set of 52 playing cards (plus two Jolly Joker cards and one extra) issued for the 2006 Italian general election by the Forza Italia political party, founded by Berlusconi in 1994, the cards featuring various images and slogans (´Berlusconi Presidente´) in support of Berlusconi being re-elected as Prime Minister (he was narrowly defeated, although did not concede losing). The Ace of Diamonds card bears a colour head and shoulders image of Berlusconi with the caption La sinistra dice che tutto va male - Lasciamola Perdere (Translation: ´The Left says that everything is going wrong - Let's let it lose´) and is signed by the Prime Minister in blue ink with his name alone. Contained in the original cardboard box (some light age wear). Generally VG

Mackenzie announces ´Pour encourager votre science......dans la cite de Tours, et votre maniere admirable d´administrer, et votre bonte envers moi en toutes circonstances j´ai arrange que mille francs sera remis entre vos mains, par notre agent Mr. Greaves´ (Translation: ´To encourage your.......science in the city of Tours, and your admirable manner of administration, and your kindness to me in all circumstances I have arranged that one thousand francs shall be given into your hands, by our agent Mr. Greaves´) and further adds ´Et qu´aussi longtemps que nous serons dans ce district, que nous contribuerons annuellement pour votre hopital deux mille cinq cents francs - dites pour la presente annee 1845. La somme ci-dessus vous sera presentee´ (Translation: ´And that as long as we are in this district, we will contribute annually for your hospital two thousand five hundred francs - say for the present year 1845. BAILLY JEAN SYLVAIN: (1736-1793) French astronomer and mathematician, a political leader during the early part of the French Revolution who served as the first Mayor of Paris 1789-91. Bailly was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. L.S., Bailly, as Mayor of Paris, one page, 4to, Paris, 6th August 1791, to unidentified correspondents, in French. Bailly states, in part, ´Le Bureau Municipal, Meisseurs, a recu avec le plus vif interet votre arrete et les deputes que vous nous avez envoye pour reclamer les restes d´un Citoyen estimable dont vous regrettez......une deputation tres nombreuse de la Garde N[ationale]. a accompagne son convoi avec les drapeaux, ils l´ont accompagne jusqu´a la barriere ou elle l´a remis entre les mains du detachement qui vous avez envoye. La Municipalite a ete charmee de trouver l´occasion de rendre a la memoire d´un Citoyen estimable les honneurs qui lui sont dus et de vous donner une assurance des sentiments fraternels de qui l´animent´ (Translation: ´The Municipal Office, Gentlemen, has received with the greatest interest your decree and the deputies that you sent to us to claim the remains of an estimable Citizen for whom you regret...... a very large deputation of the N[ational] Guard accompanied his convoy with the flags, they accompanied him to the barricade where they handed him over to the detachment that you had sent. Signed and inscribed Christmas greetings card by both the Prince and Princess of Wales individually, the stiff white 8vo folding card featuring a colour photograph to the inside depicting the royal couple seated together in full-length poses accompanied by their two young sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and a small dog who lies on Princess Diana´s lap. Signed ('Charles') by the Prince in fountain pen ink, adding an inscription in his hand, above and below a printed greeting, 'To you both......from Charles and', the Princess adding her signature ('Diana') alongside, also fountain pen ink. With two gold coats of arms to the cover, representing the Prince of Wales and the Spencer family. Dyck? Je ne sais si ma femme pourra se joindre a moi - comme ou dit - en ce moment, Marcel, convalescent, est a la maison. Elle ne le quitta quasi pas. HILLARY RICHARD: (1919-1943) Anglo-Australian Flight Lieutenant, a Royal Air Force fighter pilot during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. An extremely rare book signed, being a hardback edition of The Last Enemy, First Edition published by Macmillan & Co. Ltd., London, 1942. Signed ('Richard Hillary') by the pilot in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the front free endpaper. Bound in the publisher's blue cloth and with a gilt title to the spine (which is faded). Lacking the dust wrapper. Autographs of Hillary are extremely rare in any form as a result of his tragic death in an airplane crash at the age of 23, and authentically signed copies of The Last Enemy are particularly desirable (those that usually appear on the market bearing forged signatures). Some light age wear, about VGThe Last Enemy was Hillary's war memoir detailing his experiences during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Of the book and its author J. B. Priestley wrote 'The Last Enemy differs from all other books about the R.A.F. because its author, Richard Hillary, is by temperament and inclination, and to some extent training, a writer…….The value of this book lies in the fact that it is a statement of a fully articulate young man about life in a Service which is generally inarticulate. Richard Hillary happens to be a young man who doesn't often find his way into the R.A.F. He is in my view a born writer'
STAMP TERENCE: (1938- ) English actor, an Academy Award nominee for Best Supporting Actor in 1962 for his role as Billy Budd in Billy Budd. A good vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Stamp in a smiling head and shoulders pose in costume from his Oscar nominated performance as Billy Budd, crewman on board HMS Avenger, from the British historical drama-adventure film Billy Budd, directed and co-written by Peter Ustinov. Signed by Stamp in black ink with his name alone to a light area of the image and with a more complete and legible signature than is usually encountered. VG
MONET CLAUDE: (1840-1926) French Impressionist painter. A fine A.L.S., Claude Monet, three pages, 8vo, Etretat, 27th October 1885, to Camille Pissarro (´Mon cher Pissarro´), on the printed stationery of the Hotel Blanquet, in French. Monet states that he has been meaning to write to Pissarro for some time and send his news, ´mais vous savez ce que c´est, etant toujours dehors a travailler, on est fatigue le soir et un peu paresseux pour ecrire´ (Translation: ´but you know how it is, being out all the time working, you're tired in the evening and a bit lazy to write´), remarking ´Je pensais rester moins longtemps ici, mais je suis si peu favorise par le temps que c´est le diable de pouvoir terminer quelque chose. J´ai eu beau faire mettre des toiles pour tous les temps, je n´en viens pas a bout d´une, entre les changements de maree, les bateaux qui ne sont jamais a la meme place´ (Translation: ´I thought I'd stay here for less time, but I'm so short of time that it's the devil to get anything done. No matter how many times I've had canvases put up for all weathers, I can't finish one, between the changes in the weather and the boats that are never in the same place´) explaining that he will remain at Etretat for a while longer, in order to make the most of his trip, and therefore won´t be able to attend the next dinners with Pissarro, ´Vous voudrez bien m´en excusre aupres des amis, et leur faire mes amities. Et vous, que faites-vous, et Renoir, Cezanne, Sisley et Durand les affaires, en tout cela un mot et vous serez bien aimable de me mettre un peu au courant´ (Translation: ´I apologise to my friends for this, and send them my regards. And you, what are you doing, and Renoir, Cezanne, Sisley and Durand, the business, in all this a word and you will be very kind to give me some information´). In concluding Monet states that he hopes Pissarro is in good health, that matters are going well for him, and asking for his compliments to be given to Pissarro´s wife and their son Lucien. A letter of good association and fine content, not least for its references to Monet´s work, but also for the mention of a number of other Impressionist artists. These landmarks and the associated resort beach attracted not only Monet, but other artists including Eugene Boudin and Gustave Courbet. Monet´s paintings created at Etretat in 1885 include The Cliffs at Etretat and Sailboats behind the needle at Etretat.

ROYAL AIR FORCE: Basil Bush (1914-2002) British fighter pilot of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain and was later sent to Russia, in September 1941, as part of No.151 Wing RAF where he participated in Operation Benedict, providing air defence for Allied ships as they were discharging at ports within range of the Luftwaffe units in Norway and Finland. Signed 10.5 x 7 light paperstock reproduction image depicting Bush and one of his fellow pilots standing together in full-length poses at the entrance to the Headquarters of 151 Wing. Signed (´B M Bush, F/Lt DFC, Russia´) by Bush in blue ink to a clear area at the base of the image; Charlton Haw (1920-1993) British fighter pilot of World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain and was also later sent to Russia as part of No. 151 Wing RAF in order to participate in Operation Benedict. Two signed 5 x 4 and 4.5 x 2.5 printed images, each evidently neatly clipped from a book, one depicting Haw standing in a half-length pose alongside two other pilots (one being the Soviet Naval Ace Lieutenant Colonel Boris Safonov) and the other showing Haw and several other pilots receiving medals from the Russian Ambassador Ivan Maisky. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, awards the bronze medal of Ehrenkreuzes der Deutschen Mutter (German Mother´s Cross of Honour) to Gertrud Giese, with the maiden name Juert, from Eberswalde. The printed facsimile signatures of Hitler and Meissner appear at the foot of the document alongside a circular blind embossed seal featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika.
