Original vintage World War Two poster by the notable British cartoonist and illustrator Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird; 1887-1965) from the popular Careless Talk Costs Lives wartime propaganda series issued by the Ministry of Information - "Be careful what you say and where you say it!" Cyril Kenneth Bird CBE (17 December 1887 – 11 June 1965), known by the pen name Fougasse, was a British cartoonist best known for his work in Punch magazine (of which he served as editor from 1949 to 1953) and his World War II warning propaganda posters. He also designed many posters for the London Underground. Bird was born in London on 17 December 1887, the son of Arthur Bird, a company director. He was educated at Cheltenham College and King's College London (B.Sc). While at King's College he attended evening art classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and at the School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court. He was seriously injured at the Battle of Gallipoli during World War I and invalided out of the British Army. Bird first contributed to Punch in 1916, while convalescing, and also contributed to several other British newspapers and magazines, including the Graphic and Tatler. His pen name was based on the fougasse, a type of mine. As one of the best known cartoonists of the time, he was one of 170 authors who created doll-sized books exclusively for Queen Mary's Dolls' House; his illustrated verse tale, written on postage stamp-sized pages, was published as a regular-sized hardback in 2012 by the Royal Collection and Walker Books. In the course of the 1920s and 1930s, his drawings evolved from the traditionally representational to an innovative, spare, style that was both unique and popular, featuring in many advertising campaigns as well as in magazine editorial. He became art editor of Punch from 1937 to 1949, then editor until 1953. He was the only cartoonist ever to edit the magazine. During World War II, he worked unpaid for the Ministry of Information, designing humorous but effective propaganda posters including the famous "Careless Talk Costs Lives" series. For this work he was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946. He illustrated and co-wrote several humorous books with W. D. H. McCullough. These included the very successful Aces Made Easy – or Pons asinorum in a nutshell, on the subject of contract bridge, in 1934, and You Have Been Warned – A Complete Guide to the Road, in 1935. In the mid 1950s, he taught at the Christian Science Sunday School in the Sloane Square church, which has since been converted into the Cadogan Hall concert hall. He died in London, aged 77. Since 2009 his cartoon of a butler carrying a tray has been used to illustrate the front page of British Airways' First Class menus, continuing an association with the airline which goes back to the 1930s when Fougasse penned advertising posters for BA's forerunner, Imperial Airways. Vichy France (French: Régime de Vichy) is the common name of the French State (État français) headed by Marshal Philippe Pétain during World War II. It represented the unoccupied "Free Zone" (zone libre) in the southern part of metropolitan France and the French colonial empire. From 1940 to 1942, while the Vichy regime was the nominal government of all of France except Alsace-Lorraine, the German militarily occupied northern France. While Paris remained the de jure capital of France, the government chose to relocate to the town of Vichy, 360 km (220 mi) to the south in the zone libre, which thus became the de facto capital of the French State. Following the Allied landings in French North Africa in November 1942, southern France was also militarily occupied by Germany and Italy. Petain's regime remained in Vichy as the nominal government of France, albeit one that clearly operated as a de facto client state of Nazi Germany from November 1942 onward. Original vintage propaganda poster - The Palestinian. Published by the friends of Jerusalem. Aref El Rayess (or Aref Rayess) (1928 in Aley, Lebanon – 2005) was a Lebanese painter. Born in Aley (1928), Mount Lebanon, Aref El Rayess started his career as a self-taught artist exhibiting for the first time in 1948. He lived in Africa for many years during which he traveled between Senegal and Paris. In Paris, he joined the studios of Fernand Léger, André Lhote, Marcelle Marso and Ossip Zadkine while studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1957, he returned to Lebanon, but left again for Florence in 1959 with a scholarship from the Italian government. From 1960 to 1963, he lived in Rome where he went on studying and exhibiting. In 1963, he returned to Lebanon. Aref El Rayess was a prolific artist, mainly known as a painter, he also practiced etching, sculpture and tapestry. One of his tapestries, The Signs of Cadmus, is part of the collection of the Unesco Palace in Paris. Good condition, light creasing, staining. Original vintage propaganda poster -Wirklichkeit Kafr Kasem 1956 - Reality Kafr Qasim. The Kafr Qasim massacre took place in the Israeli Arab village of Kafr Qasim situated on the Green Line, at that time, the de facto border between Israel and the Jordanian West Bank on October 29, 1956. It was carried out by the Israel Border Police (Magav), who killed Arab civilians returning from work during a curfew, imposed earlier in the day, on the eve of the Sinai war, of which they were unaware. In total 48 people died, of which 19 were men, 6 were women and 23 were children aged 8–17. Arab sources usually give the death toll as 49, as they include the unborn child of one of the women. The border policemen who were involved in the shooting were brought to trial and found guilty and sentenced to prison terms, but all received pardons and were released in a year. The brigade commander was sentenced to pay the symbolic fine of 10 prutot (old Israeli cents). The Israeli court found that the command to kill civilians was “blatantly illegal”. Issachar “Yiska” Shadmi — the highest ranking official prosecuted for the massacre — stated, shortly before his death, that the curfew and the massacre were planned as phases within an operation to ethnically cleanse Israeli Arabs from the region, and that his trial was staged to protect Israeli political and military elite, including Prime Minister Ben Gurion, from taking responsibility for the massacre. In December 2007, President of Israel Shimon Peres formally apologised for the massacre. Good condition, creasing , tears, light staining. The poster most likely referrs to the Israeli-occupied territories that were occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War of 1967 and sometimes also to areas of Southern Lebanon, where Israeli military was notably present to support local Lebanese militias during the civil war and after it. Originally, those territories included the Syrian Golan Heights, the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula and Egyptian-occupied Gaza Strip and Jordanian-annexed West Bank. A five piece silver and enamel dressing table set, Albert Carter, Birmingham 1939/40, each decorated with pale blue and white detailing with foliate gilt highlights in an Art Deco style (5) CONDITION REPORT: Enamel in very good condition. Silver mounts tarnished and show some signs of blemishes and light dents. Hallmarks legible.
A George III silver teapot, possibly Charles Fox, London 1811, with demi-fluted detailing and ivory insulators, with a similar sugar bowl and milk jug, (makers differ) London 1813, 33.5ozt gross (3) CONDITION REPORT: Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. The government have proposed legislation to create a UK law to ban the sale of all ivory which sources suggest will come into effect in June 2019. Please note this means that this lot is legal to sell now but may not be in the future. Teapot- Lacking finial spacer. Ivory spacers to the handle with expected staining. Handle attached but is slightly loose. Cover sits happily. Light general surface wear and blemishes. Overall good. Hallmarks legible. Sugar and milk- Hallmarks partially rubbed. Each appear in rather good condition with only light general blemishes.

A Chinese archaistic bronze vase, hu, Chong Zhen four character seal mark, the large bronze vase extensively decorated with geometric yun wen strap work enclosing four reserves to either side depicting Baku, fish and other mythical creatures amidst waves, featuring Shou medallions and zoomorphic lugs flanking the neck with relief decoration depicting dragons chasing flaming pearls, the underside bearing Chongzhen four character seal mark, 37cm high CONDITION REPORT: The overall decoration appears in rather good condition. No obvious signs of restoration, concerning cracks or splits. Foot rim showing some dents and nicks. Seal mark appears tight. General blemishes, grubbiness and light surface wear. Interior unpolished and dirty.
A Chinese cast bronze censer, of compressed circular form raised on a tripod vase with a plain polished exterior, character marks to underside, 17cm diameter CONDITION REPORT: Unpolished rough interior. No splits or cracks. Edges of each foot show some light wear. Overall appearance is rather good. Some general surfaces scratches and blemishes.
A Japanese bronze koro and cover, late Meiji period, the compressed globular body raised on a tri-pod base decorated in relief with an archaic band and surmounted with a hardwood cover, 14cm high CONDITION REPORT: Exterior appears in good condition. Some surface blemishes and light dents visible. Rim showing some wear with nicks and dents visible. The pads of the feet appear worn. The interior is worn and unpolished and does show two areas of repair (see additional images). Wooden cover showing some splits.
A large Japanese satsuma bowl, Meiji Period, Dai Nippon Kozan Zo, the circular bowl extensively decorated to the interior with a processional scene with a mountainous landscape beyond within a kidney shaped cartouche surrounded by further geometric and floral designs, the exterior florally decorated, 25.5cm diameter CONDITION REPORT: No obvious signs of chips, cracks or restoration. Finely crazed throughout. Staining to the underside. Some light surface wear but generally good. Firing pits can be seen.
A Chinese porcelain Republic period bottle vase, Qianlong sealmark, decorated externally with a continuous band depicting an extensive mountainous and lakeside landscape with trees, boats, pagodas and figures, within two blue and white formal foliate scroll borders, the neck decorated with stiff leaf and yun wen decoration, unglazed footrim, blue sealmark to underside, 33cm high CONDITION REPORT: Generally good condition. No obvious signs of chips, cracks or restoration. The foot rim has a small stained firing crack. Some light signs of pitting. Dirty and dusty interior. There is a small section of surface speckling which is rough to the touch (see images). Decoration appears in good condition. Please see additional images for clarification.
