He was a highly competitive British driver in hillclimbs, trials and rallies and was an automobile designer and engineer. After leaving school, Goff studied architecture and throughout his life was passionate about cars, engineering and above all good design. He inherited and ran the family radio and gramophone business Imhofs in New Oxford Street, London and also established a factory manufacturing beautifully designed metal cabinets for precision instruments and the Imlok system for their assembly. Before the war he drove in trials in a Singer then an MG. He teamed up with Ben Richardson and Michael Lawson in the 'Candidi Provocatores' trials team in a 1936 Singer LM Speed Model (BBY 333). At this time he also drove alongside Sydney Allard who became a good friend. During the war Goff continued running his businesses, contributing to the war effort and driving fire engines in The Blitz.Post-war Goff became one of the greatest Allard enthusiasts and placed the initial order for the first production Allard car, a short wheelbase J1. He became a key contributor to Allard car design – the K1 (2 seater), L1 (4 seater) and especially the J1 in which he competed personally from 1946 to 1949. Acting as a consultant for the marque, in 1946 he and Nina took a white competition two seater Allard (HLP5) on a European promotional 'Grand Tour' (part sporting and part gastronomic). Goff's own account of the adventure featured in The Autocar issues of 22 and 29 November 1946. He was victorious with co driver Ken Hutchinson in the 1947 Lisbon Rally driving Allard J1 (HLP5) and again in 1949. In several rallies Raymond Baxter was Goff's co-driver. In 1951 Goff won a coveted Alpine Cup in the Alpine Rally. Most famously driving his Allard-Cadillac J2 with his sister Barbara Fraying as his co-driver he won the 2nd RAC International Rally of Great Britain in 1952.After retiring from competitive motoring Goff and Nina organised several rallies for the London Motor Club. Goff would also continue running Imhofs music enterprise and his light engineering business.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: â—Šâ—Šâ—Šâ—Š £60 + VAT uplift and storage at £12 + VAT per lot per dayFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Q312 RAE - Hustler - a unique opportunity to purchase a very special hand-made six-wheeled 1988 Hustler kit car as designed by William Towns and built by John Brazier of Bristol. Less than 400 are thought to have been built, many of those being fibreglass. This 1988 example is one of just a handful of all-wood versions built. Wooden monocoque design, with wooden body panels and fully wooden interior. Fitted with a 1.3l Austin Allegro engine, with Mini wheel subframes to the front and rear. John Brazier was an ex-Rolls Royce engineer who during the 1960s helped to work on Concorde. He later became a woodwork and metal work teacher at Brislington Comprehensive for many years. This Hustler was lovingly engineered and built over three summers in the mid-1980s and went on to serve as the main family vehicle for over thirteen years - taking the Brazier family the length and breadth of the country on various holidays. It has remained in dry storage since the early 2000s. Fitted with Allegro seats, the vehicle can sit up to eight occupants - two in the front, two in the middle and twin bench seats to the rear can accommodate a further four passengers. The attention to detail within the vehicle is second to none - John Brazier even hand-making the gear knob, handbrake handle and steering wheel from wood. Fitted with a period tape deck, the dashboard featuring pull-down glove compartments with inset cup holders. John Brazier is keen to point out that it never failed an MOT in its working life. A truly unique vehicle, that likely only requires light commissioning to make roadworthy once more. The driver's side glass sliding window is missing and would require replacement (can be sourced easily from any glass maker). CONDITION - the vehicle has been dry stored for its entire life and appears in excellent order. The vehicle was lovingly maintained its entire life, and everything was taken care of and fixed where required. At the time of parking it suffered just a simple flat battery that was never attended to. The vehicle is free-wheeling and able to be pushed with relative ease. No attempt has been made to start it since the early 2000s. John Brazier is very happy to show the new purchaser around the vehicle, and is happy to discuss its building and operation to anyone who wishes. Supplied with a small box of assorted spares. VIEWING - viewing is available by appointment only at a BS4 location. COLLECTION - collection will be required from a BS4 location, the address of which will be given once full payment has been received. The vehicle is non-running and will require a trailer. No assistance will be able to be given with loading at the address, so please bear this in mind. Important Notice: As a second-hand vehicle, buyers are reminded that such items are sold strictly 'as is' with no guarantees or warranties as to any aspect of its mechanical or electrical safety, or roadworthiness implied by Auctioneum or any agent, irrespective of any description, or written / verbal report.
