GORDON CHARLES: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. A rare 20 piastre promissory note signed by Gordon, the oblong 12mo note printed on a somewhat inferior card and with Arabic text, signed (‘C G Gordon’) in ink to the lower left corner beneath the pale green oval stamped seal of the Governor-General. Some light creasing, age wear and minor staining, and a few traces of former mounting to the verso, about G The present note, an emergency paper money also known as Siege of Khartoum currency, was issued between April and November 1884. Gordon’s currency, essentially promissory in nature, was personally guaranteed with the backing of the Egyptian government. Initially £2500 was issued in notes of various denominations and, accepted by both merchants and sailors, the notes initially provided economic relief and trade stimulus. Around half of the notes were personally signed by Gordon, the others bearing a facsimile signature which merchants were reluctant to accept. Had the currency not been introduced by Gordon the defence of Khartoum would have collapsed much earlier, however after the city was stormed and captured by the Ansar the notes were publicly burnt or left discarded in the streets for cattle to consume. Possession of the notes was subject to an unpleasant punishment, nevertheless some made their way across the desert in the following months hidden in clothing or bags of grain, completely at risk to their owner’s lives.
SANDWICH EARL OF: (1718-1792) British Statesman, First Lord of the Admiralty 1748-51, 1763, 1771-82. Sandwich is also remembered today as the eponymous inventor of the sandwich. A.L.S., Sandwich, one page, 4to, Admiralty, 12th June 1779, to a gentleman. Sandwich informs his correspondent 'I should have given you a ship before this time had I not understood that it was your wish to have one that is to be fitted at Plymouth, it is therefore no fault of mine that you are not now at sea.' With integral leaf (minor traces of former mounting to the right edge). A small contemporary ink annotation appears to the upper left corner. Some light staining and age wear, only very slightly affecting a few letters of text, but not the signature, and with a very neat split to the central horizontal fold, neatly repaired to the verso and barely noticeable. A couple of smaller, neat splits at the edges of a few other folds. About VG Curiously, the integral leaf is annotated 'Captain Brisbane, the late Admiral Brisbane' in a contemporary, although unidentified hand. Given the date of the letter, the recipient could not have been Sir James Brisbane, the British Naval Captain who served under Horatio Nelson and was born in 1774, or his cousin Sir Thomas Brisbane, the British Major General who served under the Duke of Wellington, who was born a year earlier in 1773.
FREDERICK DUKE OF YORK: (1763-1827) Son of King George III, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. D.S., Frederick F.M., two pages, 4to, n.p., n.d. Le Baron Pasquier, President of the house of Lords, in French, on the printed stationary of the Office of the President of the council of Ministers. Soult states that, owing to an accident he suffered on his return from travelling with the King, he shall not be able to leave his apartment although wishes 'to be present for the debate which will take place in the Upper House on the White Paper concerning the state of siege' and asking if it will be possible to postpone the debate for a few days. A.L.S., St Vincent, one page, 8vo, Torr Abbey, 6th December 1800, to [William Jervis] 'My dear brother'. St. Vincent informs his correspondent, 'I write to Mr Anson by this post desiring to have the refusal of Hilcot - agreeing with you entirely, that if Edward has not occupation he will be restless & unhappy - I will purchase anything you like as an equivalent for Meaford which on every account, one wishes, should be attached to the Title' adding the postscript, 'I am morally certain of bringing Mr Thos. Jervis into Yarmouth, with a high hand St. Vt.' With blank integral leaf. With autograph address panel and remnants of a red wax seal (a tear where originally broken). Together with an unsigned contemporary epitaph to John Jervis, four pages, 8vo, n.d. (c.1823), n.p. The unidentified author neatly pens an obituary with pertinent biographical detail and comment, including, 'At the early age of thirteen he entered the Royal Navy remaining during a long and active life one of it's brightest ornaments… On the ever memorable 14th of Feb 1797 he achieved off Cape St. Vincent, with a far inferior force, that conquest over the Spanish fleet, which carried his renown to the greatest heights and destroyed the effect of one of the most powerful combinations ever directed against the power of Great Britain…' Some light dust toning and minor age wear, otherwise G, 2 The present letter from St. Vincent refers to Meaford Hall in Staffordshire, in which the Earl was born. The residence at the time of the correspondence belonged, no doubt through his inheritance, to his brother, William Jervis. St. Vincent wished to acquire the hall so that it would become part of his Title, 'Earl St. Vincent, Baron Jervis of Meaford'. A task in which he succeeded. St. Vincent had been MP for Yarmouth before he received his peerage in 1779. The postscript most likely refers to his intention to influence the securing of a seat for Thomas Jervis. If so he was unsuccessful.

Some very light, minor creasing and a couple of light stains to the lower right edge, not affecting the text or signature, about VG John Harding - General Manager of the National Sporting Club in London who also acted as an agent in the United Kingdom for a number of Hollywood movie stars including Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. Sinatra signed the present letter using the name of his character, Private Angelo Maggio, whom he portrayed in the film From Here to Eternity (1953) which also starred Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed. The film won eight of the Academy Awards from the thirteen it was nominated for. Sinatra won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, an accolade he refers to in the present letter.
SINATRA FRANK: (1915-1998) American Singer and Actor, Academy Award winner. T.L.S., Frank, one page, 4to, Beverly Hills, California, 28th July 1954, to John [Harding]. Sinatra explains his delay in answering his correspondent's letter and acknowledges the arrival of some records ('There're wonderful, and thank you very much') and continues 'I had a letter from Harry Myers, questioning me on my alleged acts of bad behavior entered into the case by John Mills', commenting 'I hadn't answered Harry because frankly, I didn't know how to explain it to him. I told him once or twice, in my letters, that I feel the issue at hand is whether or not I was a member of the Millroy [sic] Club and whether I misbehaved at the Millroy [sic] Club etc., etc., etc. I think everything else is completely irrelevant, and has no bearing on the basic matter. Please convey these thoughts to Harry, and tell him I suggest that his line of attack follow that and that alone and we should be all right. By the way, when does it go to trial?'. Sinatra further writes that 'Everything is going extremely well for me. I feel wonderful', enquires after Harding's own well being and in a postscript remarks 'Keep me informed as to when John Mills goes to New York. I have a big surprise for him.'. The two, in particular Sessler, became prominent London restaurateurs and club owners, however their partnership ended with issues arising from their ownership of Les Ambassadeurs. SINATRA FRANK: (1915-1998) American Singer and Actor, Academy Award winner. T.L.S., Frank, two pages, 4to, n.p., 23rd September 1954, to John [Harding], on his personal printed stationery featuring his facsimile signature at the head of the first page. Sinatra announces 'I cannot seem to get the point across to Myers….' and explains 'first of all the incident with B.E.A., at which you were present was highly exaggerated and that I did not make any scene, I merely made a statement, quote: “If I can possibly help it, I'll not fly this Airline any more.”', adding 'Now, John, you know goddamned well that we were absolutely right in our complaint to the Airline. I admit that we were a few minutes late, however the airplane was still at the ramp and they could have allowed us to board. But they didn't, so I thought it was rather poor treatment. That's number one. Number two - the Palm Springs incident. This particular episode only concerned my wife and myself, so I do not wish to discuss it in an English court or any other court.' Sinatra further states 'I started this letter by saying I couldn't get my point across, and my point is, John, that I am not on trial. Mills is the one who's being tried for defaming my character. I very well understand what Myers is driving at in view of the fact that Mills lawyer could conceivably bring these points up. However, assuming this, Myers should certainly be able to have these particular inferences struck out, purely on the basis that I am not on trial. So will you please, for God's sake, tell him to forget them and concentrate on the basic case.' He continues 'Our ruse of my coming to England is working out perfectly, not only in British publications but also in newspapers over here. But I needn't tell you that I don't think there's a chance of my being present at the time of the trial' and in a postscript asks Harding to watch out for the actress Mona Freeman at the Dorchester, remarking 'Call and see if there's anything you can do to make her comfortable'. AN IMPORTANT ROMANO-BRITISH MOSAIC, 3rd/4th century, attributed to the Durnovarian School of Mosaiciststhe principal panel with a leopard killing a gazelle within a guilloche border, 237cm x 190cm maximum. This mosaic represents a large fragment of the Roman pavement from Room 11 of the Roman Villa at Dewlish in Dorset. Between 1969 and 1979 a series of annual excavations under the direction of the late W.G. (Bill) Putnam uncovered an important villa complex, which evolved from a long house dating from the late 3rd century. The presence of the villa first came to light in 1740 when a storm uprooted a tree revealing a mosaic, as recorded in Hutchins "History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset" (1863, 607; originally published in 1774). Evidently more of the site was uncovered by digging and left exposed for the curious to view. In "about the year 1790" Hutchins continues "that a Mr Knight uncovered the villa once more, but few useful details are recorded from this escapade and the finds that are mentioned are now lost". These early interventions and 20th century ploughing explain the disruption to the site encountered by the scientific survey carried out between 1969 and 1979. According to the post-excavation report this mosaic dates from phase three when the original Roman farmhouse was aggrandised with some major extensions to the existing building. Putnam proposes an early 4th century date as being likely for this phase of the villa's development.
