Brittle age craquelure, not appreciably raised and all stable. Scattered minor losses, mostly restored other than a few tiny pin prick losses. Further larger losses to bottom left and right corners, to the trees at the end of the path, above the puddle/pond, and above right of the chimney. Scattered further reinforcing passages of overpaint to the dark passages such as tree trunks and in the fence and trees to the right. There has been a broad, brushy campaign of overpaint to the sky - it is not clear why this has been carried out and what it might be covering (see UV images). There is an even varnish, not appreciably yellowed, and light surface dirt.

A quantity of dirt and debris behind bottom stretcher. The edges of the original canvas can be seen at the right edge. Brittle age and impact cracks throughout, along with stretcher bar cracks. Most prominently in the sky. All stable but slightly raised. Minor scattered restored losses. There has been at least one campaign of widespread overpainting mostly to the sky with touches to the sails and the sea. The overpaint is discoloured and is very white. It is not clear what this is covering. There is a dark line/drip down the left edge. There has been some minor abrasion to the delicate browns. There is ingrained old discoloured varnish and dirt, and an even glossy upper varnish with light surface dirt.

Leather inset has shrinkage. Light scuffs and marks. Some fading to the mahogany on one side. Dummy drawer front is broken. Evidence of old worm. Chest of drawers - with large losses and repairs to the venner on the top, cracked also. Fading to the front and losses to the cockbeading. Large areas of veneer loss and damage of all feet but structurally sound.

William Fox Strangways was the author of Geological Sketches of the Environs of Petersberg, which was one of the earliest works on the geology of Russia. Both geologists made strong contributions to the field of geology.
