Dame Laura Knight RA, RWS, RE, RWA, PSWA, DBE, (1877-1970) Ballet backstage Signed, pencil, 34.5cm by 24cm Dame Laura Knight was a figure and landscape painter in oil and watercolour, draughtsman and etcher. She was born in Long Eaton in Derbyshire and later studied at Nottingham School of Art, where she met her husband Harold Knight. They both became members of the Staithes Group of artists on the North East Yorkshire coast. From 1908 - 18 they lived in Cornwall and in 1903 Laura exhibited her first work at the Royal Academy. Dame Laura Knight was particularly fond of accessing the backstage world of the ballet and circus where she could witness the characters preparing for the performance they were about to give. Her dedicated visits to the ballet began in 1911, from the time of the ballet Russes in London, and continued up until the Bolshoi Tour in 1956. Her interest in the circus began after the World War I, circa 1920, with the Swallow Circus in Islington, where Walter Sickert is also known to have visited and drawn inspiration. In 1927 she met Bertram Mills and travelled with Mill`s outfit between 1927-1929. In 1936 Knight became elected to the RA and her autobiography Oil Paint and Grease Paint was published in 1936. During World War II she worked for the War Artist`s Advisory Committee and then drew the war crimes trials at Nuremberg. Knight exhibited widely across the UK and beyond and major institutions such as the Imperial War Museum and Tate Gallery hold her work Retrospective exhibitions were held at the Upper Galleries in 1969 & Nottingham Castle Museum in 1970.
