Maritz, [Salomon Gerhardus] `Manie` My Lewe en Strewe 8vo; original orange cloth, lettered in black on spine, and with black lettering and Transvaal coat-of-arms to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. (iv) + 263; title page portrait. Spine and edges of boards sunned; earlier owner`s name on pastedowns; some light foxing to endpapers, outer leaves and edges. Very good condition. (Nienaber I, p. 238) Salomon Gerhardus (Manie) Maritz (1876 - 1940), `Boer general and rebel leader of 1914, was a descendant of the Voortrekker leader Gerrit Maritz … Maritz became an admirer of Nazism. He joined the Greyshirt movement in the Union, but resigned in 1934 to form the South African National Democratic movement. He was farming in South-West Africa at the time, but paid frequent visits to the Union to make speeches attacking the Jews and Freemasonry. In August 1939 he was charged in the high court, Windhoek, with engendering racial hostility in South-West Africa by the distribution of his book, My lewe en strewe (Pretoria, 1939). On 34 August he was found guilty, the presiding judge stating that the book had been `… written with the deliberate object of encouraging bad feelings towards the Jewish race`. … Maritz was short, stocky, broad-shouldered and dark-complexioned. In his prime he was endowed with exceptional physical strength about which many striking anecdotes were recorded by his contemporaries. His courage, energy and ruthlessness made him a formidable opponent in the field. In civilian life his impetuosity, restlessness and lack of business acumen precipitated a series of financial setbacks. He undoubtedly had a personal magnetism, but his arrogance, violent temper and pathological racial prejudices made him many enemies and often alienated his friends.` (Dictionary of South African Biography, Vol. I., pp. 513-515) Publisher Place: [Pretoria] Publisher: the author Publication Date: [1939] Reserve: $40 Click here to view further details and to bid

Rompel-Koopman, L. Wat Mevrouw Generaal Joubert Vertelt Crown 8vo; original green cloth blocked in black and gilt on upper board, and lettered in gilt on spine; pp. 96; plates. Light wear to cloth; pages a little browned. Very good condition. Dutch text. `Hardened by the privations and misfortunes of the Trek, [Hendrina Susanna Johanna Joubert] was tough, intrepid, and fearless. Stories about her courage and perseverance have become almost legendary. During the Transvaal annexation period, for example, she crossed the Vaal River in full spate, with a waggon loaded with rifles which her husband had obtained when the deputation visited Europe, so preventing the arms from falling into British hands. In times of adversity it was she who encouraged and inspired General Joubert to carry on. Until the end of her eventful life Hendrina Joubert retained a slim elegance, an upright and proud figure, and an aristocratic bearing. Despite her stern looks she was a gentle person at heart. … Her memoirs, compiled by Mrs. M. L. Rompel-Koopman, appeared under the title `Wat mevrouw generaal Joubert vertelt` in 1915, and are an invaluable cultural-historical document. In it she recounts how the children were taught while on trek, and talks about the clothing worn, home industries, and the illnesses and disasters that befell them all during the Trek.` - DSAB V, pp. 395-6 Publisher Place: Cape Town / Amsterdam Publisher: H.A.U.M. / J. Jackson, Murray Cosby (author and illustrator) A Soldier`s Diary. South Africa 1899-1901 Demy 8vo; original purple cloth, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. x + (ii) + 366; frontis.; line drawings. Spine sunned and a little soiled; slight wear to extremities; trace of stippling to cloth; earlier owner`s name signed on front pastedown; hinges tender; hinges somewhat foxed, occasional spotting elsewhere. Good. (Hackett, p. 161) `Campaign experiences of an NCO in the 7th Battn. Mounted Infantry. The writer took part in the advance from Bloemfontein to Pretoria. Copies recorded bound in light brown cloth and purple cloth, the latter of larger format.` - Hackett: South African War Books - An Illustrated Bibliography. `A word should be said here of the author`s personality. Sergt. Jackson is a son of Lieut.-Colonel Halkett Jackson, who was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts at Cabul and saw much active service in different parts of the Empire. In spite of the modesty of his narrative the reader experienced in military matters will probably guess (as was the case) that Sergt. Jackson served with distinction in South Africa. Indeed, he was on at least two occasions offered a commission. Finally, lest his expressive illustrations should be subjected to an academic criticism which they were not expected to face, it should be mentioned that he has never had a drawing lesson in his life. It is hoped that, although the official histories and accounts of the South African war which have appeared are many and excellent, there may yet be room for this entirely unofficial and graphic narrative of some of that campaign`s less-known phases.` - From the Publisher`s Note. Cloth a little soiled; upper hinge just starting; some moderate spotting and regular light browning throughout. Good condition. (Hackett, p. 128; Mendelssohn I, p. 96) `An account of the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria by a correspondent of the Morning Post. The narrative is followed by chapters on `The remaking of an army`. Appendices include - The march of the 6th Division from Modder River to Bloemfontein, statistics in reference to killed and wounded, notes on climate, etc.` - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 10. `A sketch of the South African War (1899-1902), from the departure of Lord Roberts from England to the capture of Pretoria. The author is by no means an optimist, and is often a severe critic, even General French not escaping. At times Mr. Battersby has grave censure for the Boer whom he describes as `a creature of talk, a thing of pretences,` but he relates many touching episodes about them, and is evidently quite unbiassed. The book ends with several chapters on `The Remaking of an Army,` and among the appendices is a note on the climate of the veld.` - Mendelssohn. Although unfinished, the Summa is `one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature.` It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa`s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; Creation, Man; Man`s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. The plain endpapers + 3369 pp of documents, commentary and notes + several fold-out appendixes are unmarked and undiscoloured. The binding condition varies from very good, with light corner bumping, for the first four volumes to fine for the remaining three volumes. Because the Orange Free State Republic`s constitution and parliament (Volksraad) were acknowledged to have been ahead of their time, this set, which covers the first ten years of the work of the Volksraad, is a valuable South African political history reference source. The original material is reproduced in High Dutch, while the commentary and notes are in Afrikaans. Fry, C Hilary, Stuart Keith and Emil K Urban (series editors) Birds of Africa (Seven volumes, 1982-2004) One of the finest series of bird books to have been published in recent times, this 7-vol set took a quarter of a century to plan and produce, with many of the world`s leading authorities working under the three series editors. The bird artist responsible for most of the 232 full-page colour plates was Martin Woodcock, with credit for most of the line illustrations in the text going to Ian Wallis. Although the set runs to a total of 4700 pp, good indexing and cross-referencing make it easy to use. This series of first editions is in fine overall condition, with no ownership names or other markings. Departures from what would otherwise be `as new` condition are light thumbing, indicating how little this set (from the estate of one of Johannesburg`s leading bird book collectors) was used; as well as the minor blemishes noted in the following summary of the volumes - bound in matching brown cloth, gilt to the front and spine, and with laminated dustjackets. Vol I. xiii + 521 pp. Small chip to the dustjacket at the rear top fold. Vol II. xvi + 552 pp. Headband soft. Vol III. xvi + 611 pp. Small black horizontal stain at upper middle of front dustjacket. Vol IV. xv + 609 pp. Small crease to the top front of dustjacket. Vol V. xix + 669 pp. The last 18 leaves, including some blanks, are lightly rippled at the middle of the outer edge, with no effect on the text. Vol VI. xvii + 724 pp. Headband soft; 3 cm stain at upper left of front of dustjacket. Vol VII. xxi + 666 pp. Front top of dustjacket and 6 cm of front upper board and top of spine lightly rubbed. Nelson Mandela General Strike - Scarce Early Mandela Publication This is the original highly important 16pp. pamphlet written by Mandela and constitutes `A Report of the 3-Day Strike in South Africa on May 29, 30, and 31, 1961`, which coincides with the proclamation of the Republic of South Africa. Pre imprisonment Mandela items are as scarce as hen`s teeth. Journal/magazine articles exist but are seldom encountered. But solo Mandela items are highly sought after and rare. This copy is in lightly used but intact stapled integral paperwraps, which have a light crease from folding. It was published by Mandela himself as Honorary Secretary of the All-In-African National Action Council. The closing paragraph reads: `The strike at the end of May was only the beginning of our campaign. We are now launching a full-scale, countrywide campaign of non-cooperation with the Verwoerd Government, until we have won an elected National Convention, representing all the people of this country, with the power to draw up and enforce a new democratic constitution`. Aunt Louisa (Pen name of Laura Valentine) Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes A large folio (252 x 320mm high) book in a coloured, soft cover of linen backed with card on the outside and paper on the inside. Twelve pages, six being full colour whole page illustrations and six with coloured subsidiary drawings and text, to portray popular juvenile subjects. The internal pages are also of linen faced with paper on both sides. The back cover bears full colour illustrations of the seven books of the “Royal Toy Books” series. The front and back inner covers portray an alphabet in red and black. The book is in Good condition, with some wear on the corners and the lower staple has worn through the paper of the inner back.
