Turner (J.M.W.).- Hofland (Mrs.) River Scenery, by Turner and Girtin, engraved title and 20 fine mezzotint plates after Turner and Girtin on china paper and mounted, contemporary ink signature of A.Keightley to head of title, one plate with small stain, some with very slight spotting, contemporary half calf, rubbed, joints worn, rebacked preserving old spine, [Ray, England 12], folio, W.B.Cooke, 1827.⁂ Although the list of plates calls for 18 plates Ray calls for 20. "Turner's rendering of light on clouds and water puts these scenes among his finest prints, while Girtin's darker engravings have a gloomy majesty". (Ray)
Morris (William) The Story of the Glittering Plain, [one of 250 copies on paper], printed in red and black with text in Troy type and table of contents in Chaucer type, wood-engraved illustrations designed by Walter Crane and borders and initials by Morris, very light spotting to half-title and one or two other leaves, original limp vellum with ties, yapp edges, spine titled in gilt, uncut, very lightly soiled, spotting to lower cover, preserved in modern board slip-case,[Peterson A22], 4to, Kelmscott Press, 1894.⁂ The only title to be printed twice by the press. Morris had commissioned Walter Crane to illustrate his tale, as the first book to be issued by the press, but Morris got impatient with Crane's delays and eventually issued the book in 1891 without illustrations and just his own initials and ornaments. In 1894 he printed it again, this time with Crane's illustrations, although Morris was not happy with Crane's work and considered this his poorest Kelmscott production.
Officina Bodoni.- Ovidius Naso (Publius) Amores, one of 120 copies, printed in Arrighi italic with title and colophon in red and black, with initials supplied by hand in red by Claudio Bonacini, light spotting to front endpapers and initial pages, occasional thereafter, original cloth, t.e.g., others uncut, original cloth slip-case (a little toned), 8vo, Verona, Officina Bodoni, 1932.⁂ A beautiful production; the delicate initials perfectly balance the elegant type.
Canada.- [Maseres (Francis)] Additional papers concerning the Province of Quebeck, first edition, engraved hand-coloured map "Quebec and its Environs" dated 1813 laid onto title verso, 2 other Quebec plates loosely inserted, lacking final blank f., title with some show-through from glue on verso with contemporary ink ownership inscription and ink stamp, occasional light browning, modern morocco-backed boards, [Sabin 45411], 8vo, W. Canadiana.- Cockburn (Maj. Gen. James Pattison, military artist and topographical draughtsman, 1779-1847), After. One set was offered in two separate suites of six as part of The Winkworth Collection (see Christie's The Winkworth Collection: A Treasure House of Canadiana in London, lots 133 and 202), but we have been unable to trace another example of both suites together in a contemporary binding.
China and Australia.- Photograph album of views of China and Australia, c.90 albumen prints on 56pp., some a little faded, spotting to leaves and occasionally to images, original morocco, lettered "Australia - China 1885-6" in gilt on upper cover, and with initials R.J.C. on spine, light rubbing and marking, some scuffing to extremities, g.e., oblong folio, 1885-86.⁂ Excellent album of views in Australia (c.60) and China (c.30). Including: views and street scenes in Melbourne; Sydney harbour; the sinking of the S.S. Austral; the Blue Mountains; Hong Kong's harbour and street scenes; Happy Valley racecourse; junks, fishing vessels and dwellings around Canton/Guangzhou. Some of the Australian images taken by John Paine (1833-1908).
New Zealand.- Photograph album of views and peoples of New Zealand, c.80 albumen prints on 45pp, some a little faded, some spotting to leaves, original morocco, lettered "New Zealand 1885" in gilt on upper cover, and with initials R.J.C. on spine, some scuffing to corners, light marking, g.e., oblong folio, 1885.⁂ An excellent album, the majority of the images by the Burton Brothers, one of New Zealand's earliest and most important photographic studios. Including: Maori families outside their wharepuni; a view of Wellington from Mt. Victoria; Lyttleton harbour; Dunedin; Queenstown; Maori peoples in Koriniti village; Maori chiefs and elders.
China.- The Sacred Edict: containing 16 Maxims of the Emperor Kang-He. Amplified by his Son. With a Paraphrase on the whole by a Mandarin. And translated, with Notes, by William Milne, Protestant Missionary at Malacca, first edition in English, half-title, occasional small stain or light marking to margins, ink ownership inscription to head of title verso, paper slip signed "Lieut-General Sir James Outram" laid onto title verso with bookseller's label of Arthur Prosthain, Oriental Bookseller below, faint blind-stamp to title and final f., modern morocco-backed boards, 8vo, 1817.⁂ Rare first English translation of the Sacred Edict of the Kangxi Emperor, we can trace no copy at auction since 1948. The edicts were first issued by the Emperor in 1670, consisting of sixteen maxims, each seven characters long, to instruct the average citizen in the basic principals of Confucian orthodoxy. Also published here is Wang Youpu's interpretation of the maxims.
Crete.- Pashley (Robert) Travels in Crete, 2 vol., first edition, half-titles, 10 lithographed plates, folding map and plate of inscriptions, wood-engraved illustrations, some full-page, occasional ink and pencil notes to margins, 1 or 2 additional illustrations laid onto blank margins, vol. 1 title remains of adhesive strip to inner margin, bookplate and ink ownership inscriptions to pastedown and endpapers, original cloth, light sunning to spines, spine ends and corners a little bumped and frayed but a good set overall, [Blackmer 1263; Not in Abbey], 8vo, Cambridge & London, 1837.⁂ "First edition of this important work... Pashley spent most of 1834 in Crete, exploring it in detail. He was accompanied by Antonio Schranz, a member of the Maltese family of artists, who did the drawings... Pasley and Schranz visited practically every village, monasteries, ancient sites, etc. and have produced a detailed account of the island." - Blackmer.
Crete.- Spratt (Thomas Abel Bremage) Travels and Researches in Crete, 2 vol., first edition, 14 tinted lithographed plates after Spratt, mostly views, one folding, and 2 plates of inscriptions and one of coins, 2 folding hand-coloured engraved maps, numerous lithographed or wood-engraved illustrations on india paper and mounted in the text, some full-page, with advertisement leaf at beginning of vol.1 and end of vol.2, original pictorial cloth, gilt, recased with neat repairs to joints and spine ends, spines darkened, light rubbing and mottling, [Blackmer 1590], 8vo, 1865.⁂ An important survey of Crete, including an appendix comparing Cretan dialect to modern Greek by Viscount Strangford.

Gloucestershire.- Atkyns (Sir Robert) The Ancient and Present State of Gloucestershire, second edition, large paper copy, double-page engraved map, 8 plates of coats-of-arms and 64 double-page views by Kip, with Author's Epitaph and Directions to Binder f. following preface and advertisement, occasional light spotting or finger-soiling, mostly marginal, some leaves or plates with short marginal tears, some plates creased, otherwise a generally crisp and clean copy, contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments, lightly rubbed, folio, T. Spilsbury, for W. Herbert [&c.], 1768.⁂ An excellent large paper copy of the second edition. Thomas Kip's views of country seats, first published in 1712, make this one of the best known topographical works of the eighteenth century.
Maritime.- English Pilot (The) Describing the Sea-Coasts, Capes, Head-Lands, Bays, Roads, Harbours, Rivers and Ports...in the Whole Mediterranean Sea, 1786 bound with Michelot (Henri) Directions for the Mediterranean Pilot, translated by John Adams, 1788, together 2 works in 1, 17 double-page engraved maps or charts, (one large folding), woodcuts in texts, contemporary ownership note of 'A. Kernassten' to front free endpaper and same signature to title, loss to lower corner of 'Languedoc Provence' plate, occasional light spots or marks, otherwise a remarkably clean copy, contemporary calf, rebacked, spine gilt with red morocco labels, light rubbing to extremities and lower cover, folio, for Mount and Page. ⁂ Though a relatively late edition of the latter part, the work remained the favoured English pilot-book for the region of the period. The second part is an edited translation of Henri Michelot's pilot directions for the western Mediterranean by John Adams, designed to complement the charts of the first part.

Gould, 15 stunning hand-coloured engraved plates, heightened with gold, minor spotting, original cloth, spine very slightly faded, 1852, 8vo (2)⁂ Two rare and beautifully-illustrated works in lovely condition.
Haeckel (Prof. Dr. Ernst ) Kunstformen der Natur, 2 parts and supplement in 1 vol., 100 plates, several colour, some chromolithographed, a few with outline key on tissue overlay, light foxing to first few leaves, occasional marginal staining, contemporary half morocco, a little rubbed, preserved in modern cloth slip-case,[Nissen ZBI 1783], 4to, Leipzig & Vienna, [1904].⁂ An inspirational work which influenced the decorative design elements of Art Nouveau, it is seen as a bridge between science and art. The stunning plates depict a range of life forms, structures and organisms, with animals and plants from land and sea, many being illustrated and described for the first time. These include radiolarians, which Haeckel helped to popularise among amateur microscopists, sea anemones, and jelly fish.

Purser, for the Author, 1766.⁂ A very good copy of this landmark work on equine anatomy. This copy in the first issue, without watermarks and on laid paper. The artist, previously renowned as a portrait painter, became synonymous with depicting horses after this work, showing off his supreme draughtsmanship and observational talents, was published.Provenance: Royal Veterinary College (ink library stamp). This copy came from the private collection of the late book dealer and collector, Norman Comben, who was permitted to purchase a few duplicate copies from the RVC library in return for a detailed cataloguing of their collection many years ago; Dr Niall Kenny (small circular bookplate).

Chess.- Greco (Gioachino) The Royall Game of Chesse-Play, first edition in English, translated by Francis Beale, engraved portrait frontispiece just trimmed at fore-edge to plate-mark, title within typographic border, slightly trimmed at lower and fore-edge, woodcut illustration of a chess board on B7 verso, initial and final blank leaves present, some light foxing and browning,modern half calf, [Wing G1810; LN 395; Whyld & Ravilious 1656:2; Eales, A History of Chess, (1985), 96-97], 8vo, Printed for Henry Herringman, 1656.⁂ The first work on chess in English to note that the rook was sometimes depicted as a castle. This is a translation of Gioachino's Trattato del nobilissimo giuoco degli scacchi. Greco was a native of Calabria, the same province of Naples that had produced the chess masters Giovanni Leonard and Michele di Mauro. A5r has a poem by Richard Lovelace and there are several states of the preliminaries known: our copy has A5r untitled and unsigned but A4v with catchword 'Sir'. Other states have a similar A5r but no catchword on A4v; or A5 signed either 'R.L.' or 'Richard Lovelace', signalling demonstrably later states.

Cricket.- Rules to be Observed by the Players at Cricket, 2pp., in The Sky-Lark: containing a New, Elegant, and much more Numerous Collection of well chosen English Songs than any Book hitherto published, engraved frontispiece, final advertisement f., light off-setting onto title, contemporary boards, vellum corners, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, covers rubbed, [not in Padwick], oblong 12mo, for T. Evans, 1772.⁂ A rare early issue of the laws of cricket published two years prior to their amending in 1774 and likely therefore one of the last appearances of the regulations laid out in 1744 and printed in 1755, not recorded by Padwick. ESTC lists only 3 copies of this work and this copy appears to be the only one complete with the frontispiece and the advertisement leaf. Bell (Sir Charles) The Anatomy of the Brain, first edition,12 stipple-engraved and aquatint plates by T.Medland & others after Bell, some printed in colours, all but one finished by hand, tissue guards, contemporary ink inscription of L.S.Rees to head of title, text a little browned, some light marginal soiling and staining to plates, later half maroon calf, spine gilt, a little rubbed and stained, joints split, spine ends worn, preserved in modern cloth slip-case, [Wellcome II, p.315], 4to, 1802.⁂ Important treatise on the brain illustrated with magnificent engravings. Bell studied the brain and the nervous system throughout his life and discovered the two distinct types of nerves, sensory and motor.
Dentistry.- Fauchard (Pierre) Le Chirurgien Dentiste, ou Traité des Dents, 2 vol., second edition, half-titles, engraved portrait by Scotin after Le Bel and 42 plates, 2 slightly smudged, vol.1 with very light staining to preliminaries, vol.2 with 2 preliminary leaves misbound and short tear to foot of H1 affecting a few lines but no loss, a good copy in attractive contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with red morocco labels, a little rubbed, some neat repairs to spines, preserved together in modern cloth slip-case, [PMM 186, first edition; Wellcome III, 12], 12mo, Paris, Pierre-Jean Mariette, 1746.⁂ The foundation of modern scientific dentistry and one of the greatest works in the history of the subject. It was first published in 1728 and this is the preferred second edition, greatly revised and corrected, and with additional material. The excellent plates depict teeth, instruments, false teeth, braces etc. "Fauchard was the true pioneer of dental surgery". (PMM).
Harvey (William) Recentiorum disceptationes de motu cordis, sanguinis, et chyli, in animalibus, 5 parts in 1, title with woodcut printer's device, 6 engraved plates (2 in 'De motu cordis' and 4 in Aselli's 'De lactibus'), 3 woodcut illustrations in text to Walaeus (2 full-page), light water- & damp-staining causing a few small holes with loss of a few letters in third part (Du Roy and Drake texts), trimmed, handsome modern sprinkled dark brown calf tooled in blind, black calf label, [Keynes 6], small 4to, Leiden, J.Maire, 1647.⁂ Including the fourth printing of Harveys' ground-breaking De motu cordis on the circulation of the blood in the human body, first published in 1628. This is the reissue of the second complete edition using the sheets of the 1639 printing, with the addition of others' works, making it the most complete contemporary collection of texts concerning the circulation debate.
Helmholtz (Hermann Ludwig) Beschreibung eines Augen-Spiegels zur untersuchung der netzhaut im lebenden Auge, first edition, plate, neat ink signature "G.Govi 1853" to title with a couple of annotations to margins, light foxing, original printed yellow wrappers, a little soiled, rebacked, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, 8vo, Berlin, 1851.⁂ Announcement of the invention of the ophthalmoscope. Helmholtz designed this important instrument after his friend Professor Ernst Brücke showed him that eyes could be made to glow with diffused reflected light. Helmholtz realised that the reflected light could give one an image of the retina if magnified and invented this device to study the eye in greater detail, thereby improving the capacity for diagnosing pathological conditions.

Manget (Jean Jacques) Theatrum anatomicum, 2 vol., first edition, vol.1 with half-title, titles with engraved vignette of a dissection and most printed in red & black, 135 engraved plates by Seiller & others only (of 136, lacking plate 8 in vol.1), 2 folding, also lacking engraved portraits of Manget and Eustachius, with woodcut head- & tail-pieces, initials and a few diagrams, some light browning to text but plates very clean, a few minor marginal defects, slight worming to Oo gathering in vol.2 affecting a few lines but not plates, near contemporary mottled calf, rubbed and scuffed, spines gilt with morocco labels, spine ends and joints repaired, folio, Geneva, Cramer & Perachon, 1717.⁂ Important compilation of anatomical works by Browne, Willis, Harvey, Malpighi and many others. It was first published in French in 1575 with this Latin translation first appearing in 1582. The numerous and detailed woodcuts depict anatomy, surgery, instruments, treatments for dislocations, prosthetics, prodigies/monsters, distillation etc.
Paré (Ambroise) The Workes...Three Tractates out of Adrianus Spigelius of the Veines, Arteries, & Nerves, translated by Thomas Johnson, 2 parts in 1, second edition in English, engraved title with portrait and medical scenes by T.Cecill, numerous woodcuts in text, second part with 4 full-page woodcut illustrations on 3 sheets (one on both sides, all trimmed with slight loss), errata leaf at end, title soiled and frayed at edges (old tape stains to inner margin) and with unobtrusive ink library stamp, dedication lacking top outer corner not affecting text (repaired), light water-staining towards end, tear to head of Pp5 and foot of III1 affecting a few lines but no loss (latter repaired), later half calf, rubbed, rebacked preserving old spine, new label, corners repaired, [Wellcome IV, 295; Wing P349], folio, by Richard Cotes and Will. Dugard, and are to be sold by John Clarke, 1649.⁂ Including 'Aggeiologia [graece]: or, A Description of the Vessells in the body of Man' by Adrian van der Spieghel, with separate title, at end.
Santorini (Giovanni Domenico) Septemdecim tabulae quas nunc primum edit atque explicat iisque alias addit de structura mammarum et de tunica testis vaginali, edited by Michael Giradi, first edition, lacking engraved portrait but with 21 fine stipple-engraved plates by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and others, each with additional outline plate making total of 42, with final leaf containing privilege and arrangement of plates (sometimes missing), title with small embossed stamp to head and a little foxed and soiled, some other light spotting, small stain to upper margin of a few leaves affecting border of plate 17, contemporary sheep-backed marbled boards, rubbed, repairs to spine ends, [Norman 1888], folio, Parma, [Giambattista Bodoni] for Regia Typographia, 1775.⁂ The only significant medical book printed by Giambattista Bodoni. Santorini was generally acknowledged as the outstanding anatomist of his day with many parts of the body named after him, particularly in the face. The first 17 plates in the work, the "septemdecim tabulae" of the title, were drawn by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and engraved under Santorini's personal supervision, intended for an enlarged edition of his Observationes anatomicae but he died before completing the task. The plates were published 38 years after his death by Michael Girardi, a professor of anatomy at Parma, who added to them two plates by the anatomist Giovanni Battista Covoli, as well as two of his own.
Valla (Giorgio) De urinae significatione..., first edition, title with decorative woodcut border of putti, woodcut initials, lacking final blank, old ink underlining to first few lines and tracing of initial to verso of dedication, light staining to title and first few leaves, modern panelled sheep elaborately stamped in blind with border of vines and other ornaments, lower edge uncut, [Adams V150; Not in Wellcome], 8vo, Strasbourg, Heinrich Seybold, [1529].⁂ Rare 16th century work on uroscopy, the analysis of urine and its relation to health and disease. Valla (c.1430-99) was an Italian physician and mathematician who practised in Milan and Venice, and also taught medicine in Padua. Seybold, a professor of medicine as well as a printer, printed several medical texts, all of which are rare.

The first mentioned is the first edition of 'a full description of Davy's wire-gauze lamp ... and a preliminary account of his researches on flame' (Norman).
Sundials.- [Saher (Ferdinand)] Nova praxis construendi circinum proportionalem horographicum..., only edition, woodcut head- & tail-pieces and initials,18 engraved plates containing 22 figures, light staining to verso of plates, modern ink stamp of Christopher St. J.H.Daniel to pastedowns, modern sprinkled brown calf tooled in blind, very slightly rubbed, [Tomash & Williams S6; VD17 23:269580Z], oblong 8vo, Vienna, Sussana Christina [Saher], 1695.⁂ Rare work attributed to Ferdinand Saher, brother of the printer of the work, concerning a sector customised for the design of sundials. OCLC locates 5 copies worldwide with only one in the UK (University of Oxford), one in Italy, two in Germany and one in America.
Annotated.- Vida (Marcus Antonius Hieronymus) Opera, collation: A-Z Aa-Nn8, title with large woodcut printer's device, woodcut decorative initials, occasional, often extensive, early ink inter-linear and marginal notes, mostly within the Christiad, Ll5 short tear at head within text, but without loss, trimmed at head, affecting headlines / pagination, occasional spotting or light staining, lightly browned, 17th century mottled calf, richly gilt spine in compartments and with later (to style) burgundy leather label, joints splitting, but holding firm, spine ends chipped, small worm trace to upper cover, lower cover wormed / chipped, edges worn, rubbed, 16mo (106 x 64mm.), Antwerp, Christopher Plantin for Johann Steelsius, 1558.⁂ First Plantin edition. Vida (1485-1566), Italian humanist, cleric and neo-latin poet, who served at the court of Pope Leo X and was appointed to the Bishopric of Alba in 1532. Vida's works included secular writings on chess and the silkworm, which attracted the attention of an important patron in Leo X. The six books of the Christiad could not have been more important to the Roman Church by the time of their publication under Clement VII. Modelled on Virgil, they weaved the narrative of the Gospels around framework of a Roman epic, and proved to be politically advantageous. The Christiad would be an influence on John Milton.Literature: Voet 2436 B.

Shakespeare source book.- Prepositas his Practise, a Work-very necessary to be used for the better preservation of the Health of Man, Translated out of Latin into English by L. M., mostly black letter, title with woodcut fleur-de-lis ornament, woodcut initial and headpiece, title a little soiled with British Library ink stamp to verso and "Duplicate for Sale 1769" stamp below, ink name on recto largely erased causing minor holing with neat tissue repair, red ink marking to table at end, last gathering closely shaved at foot, damp-staining and occasional light browning, medical receipt in an early hand to N2 verso, bookplate with 19th century gift inscription to front pastedown, later red morocco, gilt, neatly and sympathetically rebacked and recornered, rubbed, [STC 20180.7], small 4to, by John Wolfe for Edward White, dwelling at the little north doore of Paules, at the signe of the Gunne, 1588.⁂ Rare book of medical receipts, a possible source book for Ophelia's "garland speech". We can trace no copy at auction since 1935.In his 1979 essay "Ophelia's Herbal" (Economic Botany, 1979, pp.227-232), Lucile Newman cites the present work as a potential source for Ophelia's famous "garland speech", highlighting three receipts in particular (nos. 88, 203 and 212) as containing the herbs mentioned which indicate that she could be intending for their use as abortifacients.

Blackwood was a Scottish author, lawyer, and apologist for Mary. He studied at the universities of Paris and Toulouse and was rector of the former in 1567-1568.
Machiavelli (Niccolò) The Florentine historie, translated by Thomas Bedingfeld, first edition in English, title within woodcut border with printer's device at foot, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, lacking final blank, title light browned, trimmed and laid down (no printed text verso), some spotting / light foxing, occasional staining, lightly browned, modern vellum, blind-stamped and gilt titled spine in compartments, [STC 17162], small folio, Printed [by Thomas Creede] for VVilliam Ponsonby, 1595.⁂ First edition in English of Machiavelli's history of Florence, which was commissioned by the Medici family and first published posthumously in 1532.
Porcacchi (Tommaso) Le Isole Piu Famose del Mondo, 3 parts in 1, engraved architectural title and maps and plans by Girolamo Porro, woodcut printer's device at end with initials H.S.G.K, F3 with short marginal tears and corner repaired, small previous owner's inscription to final f. verso, occasional light ink- or finger-soiling but overall still a remarkably clean and crisp copy, modern antique style blind-stamped calf, small light stain to upper cover, small folio (300 x 205mm), Venice, Giorgio Angelieri for heirs of Simone Galignani de Karera, 1590.⁂ A superb copy of this rare early atlas of the late sixteenth century, treating the world as a collection of islands. This edition contains seventeen additional maps, mostly of the islands of the Greek archipelago, which were introduced in the 1576 edition. Literature: Phillips, Atlases 3327.
Economics.- Law (John) Considerations sur le Commerce et sur l'Argent, first edition in French, engraved portrait frontispiece, title in red and black, 19pp. publisher's catalogue at end, some light water-staining, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt, extremities repaired, [Goldsmiths' 5820; Kress 3235], 12mo, The Hague, chez Jean Neaulme, 1720.⁂ Scarce. A very good copy of Law's explanation of "The System" which took shape after he was granted permission to open the first bank in France and issue paper money to his Mississippi Scheme, which controlled all of France's foreign trade. He also reorganised the French taxation system. The work's scarcity stems from Law himself having gone to great lengths to suppress its distribution and sales, since the preface revealed details of Law's murder of Edward Wilson in a duel, and his subsequent sentence to death. "John Law (1671-1729)...worked out the economics of his projects with a brilliance and . . . profundity, which places him in the front rank of economic monetary theorists of all times . . . ". The third item was originally published in Dublin in 1731 and attributed to Jonathan Swift, but repudiated by him and later reattributed by Teerink.

It warns against the dangers of carelessly-used sticks and umbrellas.
