English School c.1800 Portrait of James Hussey [b. 1757] Pastel 56 x 47cm; 22 x 18½in Hussey was an Officer in the 17th Light Dragoons posted to North America in 1775. In 1776 he was a Cornet (2nd Lieutenant), eventually rising to Captain. In the 1809 census he was listed as living in The Close, Salisbury and was described as ‘barrister out in practice, magistrate and alderman’ ++Joins to paper on both side margins, repaired tear upper margin, some areas of discolouration to face, some rubbing and further marks and blemishes
‡ Marie-Edouard Adam (French 1847-1929) The SS Mount Evans off the coast Signed and dated 1920 Oil on canvas 60 x 92cm; 23½ x 36in SS Mount Evans of 5, 598 GRT was built in 1919 for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company. It was part of Convoy ON113 from UK to USA in mid-1942; of Convoy SC100 from Halifax to UK in Sept 1942, and of Convoy HX297 from USA to UK in mid-1944. The last record of the Mount Evans is in Rio de Janiero in 1961 when it was operated by the Mount Evans Steamship Company. ++Good condition, back of canvas not visible, not examined under u.v. light
