AN IMPORTANT SPINEL AND DIAMOND COCKTAIL RINGThe central elongated cushion-shaped spinel weighing 17.50cts within a four-claw setting, to a surround of brilliant-cut diamonds and similarly-cut diamond shoulders, mounted in 18K rose gold, rings size M¾Accompanied by a report from the Gemmological Institute of Milan, stating that the spinel weighing 17.50cts is natural, of purplish-pink hue. Report number 12320, dated November 20th 2018Throughout history, spinels have been confused with rubies on account of their very similar mineral components. The gems were mined predominantly in central and south-east Asia and this gave rise to their being known as 'Balas' rubies after the Badakshan area of north Afghanistan. Here, particularly large and important specimens were found from the 1st century AD and, in the 13th century, Marco Polo is recorded as stating that all spinels mined there were property of the king. The gems were so highly regarded that they were reserved for royalty and were often presented by the king as official gifts.Indeed, spinels have made their way into a multitude of royal collections, from Iran, to France, to Russia, with perhaps the most famous currently housed amongst the British crown jewels. In 1367, as payment for military aid, Pedro the Cruel presented Edward, Prince of Wales with a 170 carat uncut polished spinel. Also known as 'The Black Prince', the stone became 'The Black Prince's Ruby' and has been treasured by the British monarchy ever since. The crystal now rests regally in England's Imperial State Crown and is on display at the Tower of London.Although technological advances mean that the spinel is no longer mistaken for a ruby, confusion over this crimson gem is still common. Since the 1920s, synthetic spinel has flooded the market to such an extent that many no longer realise that it is an authentic stone and associate it purely with costume pieces. In actual fact, spinels are remarkable jewels that demonstrate a range of colour and their strong durability makes them ideal for continued wear.Condition Report: Of purplish-pink hue, medium tone, good transparency, some minor natural inclusions visible under 10x magnification and a couple under a bright light sourceDiamonds: bright and well matched. Discovered in the mid-18th century, Pyxis is a faintly visible constellation in the southern sky:"It's not a big constellation" - Burgener explains - "It only has three brightest stars." It was not the size of the constellation that caught Burgener's eye but rather the meaning behind its name that tugged at the designer's creative mind. In both Greek and Latin, the word 'Pyxis' means compass, specifically a mariner's compass - a vital tool used by ancient navigators while sailing the oceans. This resonated with Burgener and inspired her to explore this poignant concept:"In this time of great difficulty, I wanted to reflect on our need for guidance in our journeys, a bright star to point us in the right direction". Interestingly, 'Pyxis' is also a word for a small casket holding something precious. In this knowledge, Burgener paid particular attention to the creation of the box that hold the necklace, crafting a beautifully harmonious pairing from start to finish. To paint the one-of-a-kind box, Burgener commissioned the Italian artist Chicco Margaroli to design the box only available with the Pyxis necklace. Margaroli's an Italian artist whose career spans from trompe l'ôil trough 3D installations to organic art, her deep fascination with nature enabled her to seamlessly weave her style into Burgener's brief. The necklace encompasses the delicate yet powerful beauty of the Pyxis constellation - a dainty 18K white gold chain connects three diamond-studded star-charms. Three, representing the number of brightest stars in the Pyxis constellation. Small deep blue sapphires are interspersed between the star-charms nodding to the darkness that surrounds Pyxis in space, but also symbolizing the darkness surrounding our journeys towards light. The box features cool tones of silver and blue on a dark grey background. The left and central portion of the box presents a stylized version of the Pyxis constellation, three bright stars emerging from a sea of smaller ones while a compass rose towers in the bottom right corner, a symbol to always keep on the right path.Condition Report: 30 diamonds 0.73ct total, 3 sapphires 0.30ct totalMinor signs of wear, overall in good condition
