Barrington Watson (Jamaican, b.1931)STUDY FOR BATTLE OF MORANT BAY, 1964Signed with initials, oil on board78 x 102cm Provenance: bought by the present owner in the early 1960s.This is believed to be a preparatory work for one of Barrington Watson's historical paintings produced after his return to Jamaica after studying at the Royal College of Art between 1957-60. This and his other works need to be seen in the light of the need to create symbols of national identity in the post-independance era.The Morant Bay Rebellion in 1865 is now percieved as one of the pre-eminent events in Jamaica's history. Twenty-seven years after the abolition of slavery, there was still inequality in Jamaica and, following an unfair trial for a black man, Paul Bogle led several hundred men and women to storm the court house.
