It was the English who invented the first steam engine and the first steam railroad but it was an American, Robert Fulton, who, in 1807, formally launched the steamboat era. Fulton was not the inventor, however, of the steamboat: that distinction belongs to poor John Fitch, a Connecticut Yankee and a veteran of the Continental Army who, as early as 1787, built and launched a forty-five-foot steamboat. But, alas, nothing came of that brave experiment. Fitch could get no financing for his invention and in the end gave up in despair and fled to the wilds of Kentucky where he died. Ten years later, the New York lawyer and diplomat, Robert Livingston, anticipating the role that steamboats might play in a vast nation whose only effective transportation was by water, persuaded his young friend Robert Fulton, with whose artistic and inventive talents he was familiar, to try his hand at building a steamboat. Fulton boasted a natural talent for engineering. He eagerly embraced Livingston's proposal and by 1807 was ready to launch The Clermont, named after Livingston's hometown. On its maiden trip, the boat steamed up the Hudson to Albany and returned five days later, having averaged a speed of five miles an hour. Successful as it was, it brought no great wealth to either Livingston or Fulton, for in 1824, John Marshall's Court pronounced their monopoly unconstitutional as an infringement on congressional power to regulate "commerce concerning the several states."PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. When confronted with a mountain range, the visionaries who built America's railroads had three choices: go around it, over it or through it. Those were the options available to John F. Stevens, engineer for the Great Northern Railway, when he found the Cascade Range between him and his proposed route to Puget Sound. Stevens had already brought the Great Northern through the Rocky Mountains. That experience helped him recognize the virtues of the pass that would eventually bear his name. Stevens Pass was ideal in that it allowed for several different routes. In fact, over the years, the Great Northern has had three routes at the Pass, one over it and two through it. The first ran across the summit on a series of eight arduous and time-consuming switchbacks. Not long after the switchback line was completed, work began on the original Cascade Tunnel. Nine years later, on December 20, 1900, the tunnel was opened and the switchbacks were closed. Although the new route was a vast improvement, it was still beset with severe curves, miles of snow sheds and four-percent grades. So in 1925, the Great Northern began construction on another tunnel at a more favorable site. Opened on January 29, 1929, the second Cascade Tunnel runs 7.8 miles, making it the longest railroad tunnel in the United States. Great Northern's 2-8-0 freight engine No. 1106, featured on this artwork, was built in 1901 by the Rogers Locomotive Works. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. After graduation from the Instituto Provincial de Puerto Rico he became a teacher. In 1910, he established an art school in Ponce, which he directed for forty years. In 1919 he studied at the Art Students League in New York and in 1935 at the Fine Arts Academy in Philadelphia. Along with Ramon Frade and Juan Rosado, he was one of Puerto Rico's most important realist painters of the first half of the twentieth century. His work has been recognized in Puerto Rico, the United States, and Paris, and his students include Horacio Castaing, Rafael Rios Rey, and Luis Quero Chiesa. In 2006, the Ponce Art Museum organized an exhibition that traveled to the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts; the exhibition included Pou's work as well as works by Francisco Oller and Jose Campeche. The influence of Impressionism may be seen in the importance Pou gave light and color in his paintings. He called himself a patriotic artist and he insisted that his work reflects the soul of Puerto Rico - the country people, the "salt of the earth" and the true features of its landscape.

He painted portraits and also landscapes of the White Mountains and other locales in New England. He was affiliated with the New England Art Union, and the Boston Artists' Association. In 1857 he co-founded the Boston Art Club.Born in Boston, Gerry was self-taught as an artist. He showed works in many public settings, such as the 1841 exhibit of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association; and an 1879 exhibit of contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He attended the 1860 convention of the National Art Association in Washington, DC. Students of Gerry included H. Frances Osborne, Samuel Green Wheeler Benjamin, Fannie Elliot Gifford, Charles Wesley Sanderson, and J. Frank Currier. With the exception of three years abroad, his professional life was passed chiefly in Boston.Like many 19th century artists, Samuel Lancaster Gerry began his career as a sign and decorative painter before looking abroad for inspiration. He painted landscapes and still lifes. He was the son of August Uerpmann and Anna Emilie, born in Finke. He was a decorator, he studied with Wittucher and Ludwig Fahrenkroga at the Kunstgewerbeschule Barmen. In the 1950s, Uerpmann owned the art gallery at Laurentiusstrasse in Wuppertal-Elberfeld. His health problems repeatedly forced him to take longer breaks in painting. Much of his work was disseminated through a gallery in Heidenheim, Franconia, which also organized sales exhibitions.

From 1898-99 he attended the Munich Arts and Crafts School, and later the Technical University, where he passed the state examination to teach drawing. Willi Geiger studied from 1903 with Franz von Stuck at the Munich Academy, including together with Hans Purrmann. He was awarded the National prize and the Schack scholarship for some of his early work and he traveled to Spain, Italy, and North Africa.[1] Willi Geiger was awarded the 1910 Villa Romana prize for his success as a graphic designer. He worked with Richard Dehmel, Frank Wedekind, and others.Geiger lived until 1914 in Berlin and presented in the gallery. Then he went back to Munich and became a professor at the School of Decorative Arts. He copied paintings by the great Spanish painters Goya, Velasquez, and El Greco and turned to portrait painting. Geiger's study of El Greco's work is reflected in his portrait of the composer Hans Pfitzner.After the seizure of power by the Nazis he was dismissed as a lecturer at the Leipzig Academy. He is the son of successful Swedish artist Knut Ekwall (1843-1912) and nephew of artist Emma Ekwall (1838-1930). Harald's birth came during a brief period of time when his father was studying art in Leipzig. He has several siblings who were also artists, many of whom have artwork in the marketplace that often is confused with Harald's and/or his father's. Harald Ekwall's father had studied at the Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and ultimately gained much acclaim and recognition for his skill as a xylographer (woodcut designer) and draftsman. Many of his father's works were reproduced as engravings, and some of his paintings are today considered national treasures of Sweden.Harald seems to have followed in his father's footsteps, painting in oils throughout his lifetime. In 1900 the 27 year old artist departed the European continent on a ship named Hermonthis, destined for Valparaiso, a cultural city center along the coast of Chile. According to public records, it appears that the artist remained in Chile for over a decade, eventually gaining Chilean citizenship. In 1912, he returned to Sweden, where he represented Chile in the 1912 Olympic Games held in Stockholm. He competed in Men's Shooting events including Free Pistol, Dueling Pistol, and Military Rifle. Harald Knut-Ekwall is recognized primarily as a maritime painter, although he is known to have branched out into other genres as well, including landscape and horses and riders in Western Style. It appears that many of his artworks were produced during his years in Chile, though no information has been gathered as to any specific artistic studies he may have undertaken during this time period.His works are usually signed "Harald Knut-Ekwall", while his father's works are typically signed "Knut Ekwall". Harald had at least four siblings, most of which were practicing artists. They often sign their paintings with their first initial followed by "Knut-Ekwall", possibly as a method to attract buyers who have knowledge of their famous father. One of the siblings signed their work "KE", with a backwards K and an E sharing a central vertical spine.There research into this artist is ongoing, and new facts and examples of his work are emerging over time. He studied at the John Herron Art Institute for six years, graduating in 1933. He also attended the Pennsylvania Academy for Fine Arts for one year. His most prominent teachers throughout his career included: William Forsythe, Clifton Wheeler, Frank Schoonover, and more.During the Great Depression, he entered many artistic competitions offered by the Works Progress Administration such as the Louisville Marine Hospital Mural Competition and the Lafayette Post Office Competition. Carl Moll ist einer der zentralen Künstler der Wiener Jahrhundertwende. 1897 gehört er neben seinen Zeitgenossen Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann und Joseph Maria Olbrich zu der Gruppe der Künstler, die sich vom offiziellen Kunstbetrieb abwenden und die Wiener Secession begründen. Hier ist Raum für künstlerische Wege, die sich abseits tradierter Normen und Ansprüche abspielen, eine freiere Positionierung des Künstlers erlauben und in der neue Strömungen wie Impressionismus, Symbolismus und Jugendstil ihren Platz finden. Sicherlich dürfte das Paar bereits zuvor von Hamburg aus an die Nordsee gereist sein, wo Moll in Lübeck das Schifferhaus als Motiv entdeckt. Unsere Gouache dürfte eine vor Ort entstandene Version des Motivs sein, dessen in einzelnen Details leicht abgewandeltes, ausgeführtes großformatiges Gemälde vom Künstler in seinen Eingangsbüchern 1894/95 verzeichnet ist und sich heute im Belvedere Museum Wien befindet. Für die Einrichtung dieser Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst hatte sich neben den Künstlern der Secession vor allem Moll stark gemacht, die letztlich 1903 zur Gründung des Belvedere Museums führte, in dem sich heute noch ein großer Bestand an Werken Molls findet. Insbesondere die Interieurs von Moll sind aufgrund ihrer ganz eigentümlichen Raumkonstruktion bemerkenswert. So auch in der hier steil zulaufenden Flucht über die Tische hinweg, betont noch durch das Hochformat des Ausschnitts. Das große, undurchblickbare Fenster am Ende lässt ein milchiges Licht in den Raum sickern und sorgt für Reflexe und Spiegelungen, die die herausragende Stellung Molls in dieser Gattung bekräftigen. Wir danken Frau Sybille Brandes, Tutzing, für die freundliche Auskunft. PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Großbritannien (seit den 1960er Jahren in Familienbesitz). Der an der Grenze zwischen Bayern und Salzburg liegende Hohe Göll dürfte für den geübten Bergsteiger Edward Theodore Compton wohl nicht die Herausforderung gewesen sein, der er sich sonst während seiner Touren im Hochgebirge der Schweiz beispielsweise stellte. Eine Erstbesteigung findet bereits 1800 statt, allerdings wurde ein Bericht über die Aufstiegsroute, den Schwierigkeitsgrad und die Vermessung erst 1881 in der Zeitschrift des Deutschen und Österreichischen Alpenvereins publiziert. Für Compton, den Maler-Bergsteiger rücken jedoch andere, unberührtere Gipfel in das alpinistische Interesse. So gibt Compton die Szenerie auch gewissermaßen aus idyllischer Perspektive am Fuße des Berges wieder. Die Abendsonne färbt die Bergsilhouette in feinster Aquarelltechnik rötlich, über die sanft ansteigende hügelige Lichtung gleitet der Blick über die dunkel im Schatten liegenden Tannen hinweg in die Höhe. Erahnen lässt sich dennoch, was so viele Bergsteiger zum Aufstieg treibt: „Einzig von der Begierde getrieben, diese ungewöhnliche Höhenregion mit eigenen Augen zu sehen“, formuliert es 1336 Francesco Petrarca in der allerersten Beschreibung einer Bergbesteigung in der Literaturgeschiche, „auf dem Gipfel ist das Ende aller Dinge und des Weges Ziel, darauf unsere Pilgerfahrt gerichtet ist.“ Dahinter steckt eine zutiefst menschliche Neugier, die zum Aufbruch aus dem heimeligen Tal in die Gefahren der Bergwelt drängt, um die Weite und das Licht am obersten Gipfel zu erfahren. Die große Leidenschaft Edward Theodore Comptons gilt den Bergen, die er in immer wieder neuen Ansichten in Öl, Aquarell und Zeichnung auf seinen zahlreichen Expeditionen einfängt. Seine künstlerische Tätigkeit beruht in hohem Maße auf den individuellen Eindrücken, die er während der oft anspruchsvollen Touren sammelt. In den sanfteren Süden führt ihn erst seine Hochzeitsreise mit der Münchnerin Gusti von Romako (Auguste Amalie Plötz) in den Jahren 1872-74, während der er auch die Insel Capri besucht. Hier dürfte unser feines Aquarell entstanden sein, mit dem sich Compton der hellen und luftigen Atmosphäre nähert. Die Felsen am Meer, die Wellen und die steilen Klippen bilden ein ursprüngliches und raues Naturschauspiel, das Compton in transparentem Farbeinsatz detailreich wiedergibt. Die Marina piccola befindet sich an der ruhigeren Südküste der Insel, von der aus man ebenfalls die Faraglioni-Felsen im Blick hat, die Compton in weiteren Aquarellen festhält. 1874 aus Italien zurückgekehrt, lässt sich das Paar schließlich in Feldafing am Starnberger See nieder, von wo aus sich Compton wieder auf zahlreiche Hochgebirgstouren und malerische Expeditionen begibt. Original vintage German motivational workplace poster issued by Parker-Holladay company in Berlin. Doval was a German equivalent of Bill Jones that was created in the UK by Parker-Holladay to promote the correct work ethic in the workplace. The concept was copyrighted and also taken to the USA and Canada motivating personnel to perform efficiently worldwide. The poster features an illustration of a man entering the storage room with some boxes, barrel, and books to find that the light is on, bold stylised lettering reads - Waste of light.
