Great War Diaries of 2/Lt. Douglas J.L. Routh 8th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry, an important collection of five diaries for 1916 (2), 1917,1918 and 1919, all covering the Western Front or the Home Front (Germany in 1919) while in hospital or recuperating. All the diaries are one page a day allowing the author space to fully describe his experiences, which he does fluently and with names, places, units and casualty/ prisoner details. Of particular interest is the lead up to the Somme attack of July 1st 1916 and the preparations which kept Routh fully occupied. His Battalion, part of the 21st Division attacked north of Fricourt and his description of this fateful and important day is exceptional. (supported by some handwritten messages tipped in the rear pocket of the diary and signed by Routh) "The Day" he writes " at 7.25 am our first wave left the trenches under cover of our barrage and worked its way out. Also the 2nd & 3rd waves. I had to go up and down the front to get them out. Then the barrage lifted & the Huns came out of hiding and machine guns started on us. Our 1st wave seemed to lie down, ditto 2nd. So I and the CSM started working our way up to the 1st wave and just then got hit in the chest" Before this he had managed with the help of Sergeant Hollis to shoot a German encouraging his comrades from the parapet. Then after two more wounds he starts a difficult journey to the Casualty Clearing station and eventually to a hospital in England, only returning to active service in April 1918. At this stage in the war the Somerset’s are part of the 35th Division and he comes into the line around the Lys during the period of German Offensives. Again he provides a detailed and important record as a seasoned Company Commander. On the 26 April during a patrol clash in no mans land 3 men are lost and others make their way back some hours later, having made it through the German lines. During the engagement Padre Theodore Hardy bravely rushes out to give essential first aid and receives an award recommendation from Routh. Later in the Summer he receives the VC for a similar act of selfless courage (sadly he is killed by a shell on the 18th October an incident mentioned in the diary). Detailed entries continue, however the tide of war is changing and the weight of Allied Artillery and the use of tanks, all mentioned lead to the Germans falling back. Routh now has a Staff role though he experiences a number of near misses. His reaction to the Armistice is to celebrate with a champagne dinner and cards. An exceptional record, well and clearly written with enough space to fully describe events. (5 diaries)
