Engraved portrait of the author in the second state signed "W. Sherwin sculpsit", initials, headpieces, engraved illustrations of the "The Arms of the Society of the Mines Royal" and "The Arms of the Society for the Mineral and Battery Works", the first with an explanatory note pasted beneath [as usual], 2 engraved plates titled "Comsumlock Hill" and "The Roman Works", each with letterpress "key" on versos, "Corrigenda" leaf at end (a few very short marginal tears without loss, some light mainly marginal staining and spotting, [?]printer's ink stain at upper margin of M1, not affecting letters). Contemporary calf (quite heavily rubbed, joints splitting). Provenance: old monogram [?]"J.R." on front blanks; J. C. Owen, Wrexham (modern incription in blue pencil at upper margin of title, with a note in the same hand beneath the author's name and some faint underlining to passages of the text). FIRST EDITION of a work that was undertaken at the request of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Cumberland. My duties as Deputy Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, keep me constantly travelling by air; your kindly consideration makes my journeys less of a burden than they would otherwise be. The work is often carelessly recorded as having just 16 plates, and it is true that the final plate is numbered XVI; this copy has 17 plates including plates numbered Xa and Xb which might be easy to miss in a hurried collation. FIRST EDITION. The author was a German anatomist and academic who demonstrated that the field of comparative anatomy offered important evidence supporting the theory of evolution.

"Briot's studies on heat, light, and electricity were based on the hypothesis of the existence in the ether of imponderable molecules acting upon each other, as well as upon the ponderable molecules of matter. Particularly in his study of the crystalline medium, he linked his findings to Pasteur's experimental work on the dissymmetry of crystals. These studies, which were conducted from a mathematical point of view, led to the simplification of methods for integral calculus and the advance of the theories of elliptic and Abelian functions. To honour him for this work, the Göttingen Academy named him acorresponding member" (DSB).

Provenance: later stamps on title and occasionally internally. FIRST EDITION OF JOULE'S HIGHLY IMPORTANT PAPER. "Joule began work about 1845 on a fourth method for determining the mechanical value of heat. His latest efforts received a polite but unremarkable reception at the Cambridge meeting of the British Association. This time the experiments involved a paddle wheel placed in a can filled with water. Weights attached over pulleys working in opposite directions communicated motion to the paddle wheel. Joule argued that 'the force spent in revolving the paddle wheel produced a certain increment in the temperature of the water'..." (DNB). In honour of the scientist, the name "joule" was given to the derived unit of energy equal to the energy transferred to an object when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion through a distance of one metre. AN EMERALD AND BAROQUE PEARL NECKLACE, designed as a series of alternating graduated emerald beads and baroque pearls, with possibly later clasp stamped '9c', (pearls untested for origin), length 86cm Condition report: A 6cm section of the necklace has broken away to the front of the necklace and will require solder repairs to both ends. The emerald beads vary in shape and are heavily included with multiple fracture, fissure and mineral inclusions, giving a translucent appearance, and some of the fractures are surface-reaching. The emeralds have slightly variable light to mid bluish and yellowish-green hues and vary in size from approximately 10.5mm to 6mm in length. All have surface wear, chips, fractures and scuffs. The baroque pearls are untested as natural/cultured/freshwater and all have an uneven appearance, with ripples, pitting, creases and fractures to the nacre surface. The connecting wirework links are thin and have kinks, occasional solder repairs or breaks. The jump rings are not soldered and the clasp is functioning. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 21gm.

A FRENCH JADE AND CULTURED PEARL NECKLACE AND BRACELET SUITE BY DINH VAN, each designed as a paper-link chain, spaced by alternate jadeite beads and cultured pearls in square settings, signed Dinh Van, with French lozenge-shaped maker's marks and eagle's head gold marks, the necklace stamped '© 1972', the bracelet stamped '© 1971', (jade untested for treatments), lengths 74cm and 18cm respectively (2) Jean Dinh Van (born 1927) is a French jewellery designer and craftsman who established his own workshop and eponymous jewellery brand, Dinh Van, in 1965, producing pieces in a minimalist, Bauhaus-influenced style. Dinh Van had previously studied drawing, before joining Cartier Paris in 1946, where he learnt the craft of fine jewellery design under Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier's celebrated Artistic Director of Jewellery, who retired in 1970. Condition report: Light surface wear and occasional nicks, chips and scuffs throughout the mounts, cultured pearls and jadeite beads. Some surface pitting and surface-reaching fractures to the cultured pearls and beads. The clasps are functioning and the marks are clearly struck. The jadeite beads are opaque with light whiteish-green hues, measuring approx. 9mm to 9.3mm in diameter. The cultured pearls are well matched, of creamy-white hues, measuring approx. 7 to 7.5mm in diameter. Metal standard is untested. Combined gross weight approx. 36.4gm.

Some of the rubies have surface-reaching fractures and nicks/chips, all have light surface wear. The green agates are well matched with a cloudy/milky transparency and light surface wear. Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, with estimated VS1 to SI2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. Largest diamond weight approx. 0.07ct. The mount has surface wear, scuffs, nicks and occasional areas of thinning to the edges of the setting. The pin is yellow metal, possibly later replaced, and functioning. The signature is positioned to the side of the vase, the number is positioned to the back of the vase but is difficult to read. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 7.9gm.
