Séguy (E.A.) Floréal: Dessins et Coloris Nouveaux, first edition, title, half-title and 17 (of 20) colour pochoir plates only, loose as issued, most with tissue-guard laid down to verso, lacking no.1, 5 & 18, no.9 with small patch of water-staining affecting image, a few with short marginal tears or frayed edges, some light foxing to margins, lacking portfolio case, folio, Paris, A. Calavas, [c.1925]. *** In these stunning semi-abstract designs, Emile-Allain Seguy uniquely combines Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. The pochoir technique in particular, popular in France at the turn of the 20th century, allows the artist to capture the vibrancy of colour of the flora that visually underpin this work.

The Spy's Bedside Book, first edition, signed presentation inscription from the authors "Alan Cooke from Hugh Greene | Graham Greene September 1975" on front free endpaper, original cloth, dust-jacket, light creasing to extremities, otherwise an excellent copy, [Wobbe A36], 8vo, 1957. *** Alan Cooke (1926-1994) produced and directed a 13-part series on Greene's short stories.
Fallada (Hans) The Drinker, first edition, light toning strip on endpaper, original boards, dust-jacket, price-clipped, evenly toned, some marks to lower panel, corners and spine ends very slightly nicked, still excellent overall, 8vo, 1952.*** Originally published Der Trinker, the posthumously-published novel by German writer Hans Fallada was first started in 1944 after he was imprisoned in a criminal asylum for the attempted murder of his wife. It is autobiographical in diary form, and tells the story of a man in the grip of alcoholism. Fallada originally wrote the manuscript in code, so as to encrypt the contents of the manuscript against detection by asylum staff and officials.

The recipient is presumably Elizabeth Meagher (nee Townsend), the second wife of Thomas Francis Meagher, an Irish Nationalist and leader of the Young Irelanders in the rebellion of 1848. He was convicted of sedition and sentenced to death, later commuted to transportation to Australia. He escaped and made his way to America, joining the US Army and rising to the rank of Brigadier General, fighting in the Civil War and leading the Irish Brigade. After the Civil War he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson as Montana's Territorial Secretary of State. He died in 1867 in rather mysterious circumstances, drowning in the Missouri River after falling from a steamboat at Fort Benton. It is unclear whether he fell as a result of weakness from dysentery, of being drunk; or perhaps he committed suicide or was even murdered by political opponents in Montana. We have been unable to ascertain more information on the donor, James Gibson.

This edition is based on the version published in July 1491 by his brother, Bazaliero Bazalieri, at whose press Caligola began his career. The text itself is Ovid’s Heroides, a collection of imaginary letters written from ancient mythological heroines to the lovers who abandoned or mistreated them, including Penelope, Dido, Ariadne, Phaedra, Medea, and Sappho.Literature: not in Adams; c.f. M.DC.XXXVI. Gassendi." to foot of title, some worming to upper and fore-margins, often repaired, very occasionally affecting a few letters, small hole to XXx1 with slight loss of text, some light browning and spotting, the occasional light damp-stain near start, marginal browning to first and last few leaves, bound in handsome contemporary red morocco by Simon Corberan, binder to Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, covers with central gilt monogram of Peiresc and triple gilt fillet border, spine with three raised bands, compartments decorated with small floral tools, second compartment with title and date lettered in gilt, neat and expert repairs to some corner tips, foot of upper joint and head of spine, a few small and light stains to lower cover, housed in a later custom red morocco drop-back box, [Gibson 130], 4to, Paris, Typis Petri Mettayer, 1624. *** An excellent association copy, gifted by French savant and astronomer Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637) to philosopher and mathematician Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) on 26th March 1636. The present edition is the first continental, and second overall, of Bacon's rallying cry for the advancement of learning. Peiresc's admiration of Bacon is attested by Gassendi himself in the latter’s biography of his good friend, first published in Latin in 1641 and translated into English in 1657: "No man made more observation, or procured more to be made...for which cause he admired the Genius, and approved the design of the great Chancellour of England Sir Francis Bacon, often grieving that he never had the happinesse to speak with him" (The Mirrour of True Nobility and Gentility Being the Life of the Renowned Nicolaus Claudius Fabricius, Lord of Pieresk, London, 1657, p. 207). Peiresc played a pivotal role in the dissemination of Baconian thought across continental Europe, having copies of the present work sent to his large network of scientific correspondents. This copy, gifted to the recipient of his patronage Pierre Gassendi, thus represents an extraordinary union of three of the principal advocates of the New Science: Bacon, Gassendi, and Peiresc.

As with many pre-war Queen titles, the English editions are far more difficult to find in dust-jackets in good condition than their American counterparts.

Oct 4th 1933" on front free endpaper", and the third inscription reads "‘For John from Tony | January 8th 1936" surrounded by drawn decorative Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense garter". Heygate is known rather unfortunately as the man who stole Evelyn Waugh’s first wife, née Evelyn Gardner, at a party that Powell himself gave in June 1929. An event which marked, writes Powell’s biographer Hilary Spurling, “a stage of no return in the break-up of the Waughs’ marriage”. Weare was later invited to a shooting and gambling weekend with Thurtell and his friends, Joseph Hunt and William Probert. Henrietta's brother, George Howard Darwin (1845-1912), expresses his liking for Henrietta's book in his letter letter loosely inserted in this copy. He goes so far as to offer £25-30 towards the publication costs, and also rather poignantly writes 'I perhaps naturally feel we are less interesting than our fore-runners' (p.1).
