A GILT-BRONZE 'XINIU' WEIGHT, MING DYNASTYChina, 1368-1644. Finely cast, the legendary beast seated in a recumbent position with its head turned back over its body. The tail of the creature flicked across its haunches as its hooved feet are tucked up underneath it. The hair of the xiniu's mane flowing down the back of its neck parallel to its single horn. The eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are detailed in bold lines, and the ribs are indicated by a series of deep striations.Provenance: Collection of Maria and Johannes Nickl, thence by descent in the same family. Maria (1926-2022) and Johannes Nickl (d. 2020) lived in Vienna, Austria, and were ardent collectors of Asian, Buddhist, and Egyptian works of art. They were highly active in Vienna's tightknit Asian art trade and assembled most of their collection during the 1980s and 1990s, frequently buying from Galerie Zacke and later Galerie Asboth. The couple were also noted museum patrons and their names are still found on the Ehrentafel ('Roll of Honor') of the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Museum of Fine Arts Vienna) today.Condition: Good condition with some casting flaws. Small nicks, light scratches, minor dents. Expected signs of weathering. Patches of fine patina with extensive wear to the gilding, small spots of cuprite and malachite encrustation.Weight: 162 gDimensions: Length 5.4 cm Animal-form weights have been used since antiquity, with numerous examples surviving from the Han dynasty, from which they continued to be essential for scholars in subsequent periods. The Guyu Tu, found in the Illustrated Compendium of Ancient Jades, notes that Zhao Mengfu once bought an ancient jade bixie for use as a paperweight, indicating that scholars would sometimes appropriate favorite antiquities to serve this utilitarian function. The Xuande period in particular witnessed a renewed interest in bronze wares for the scholar's desk, including bronze animal-form weights such as the present lot. The xiniu is a legendary Chinese animal. In ancient Chinese texts, the term xiniu originally meant rhinoceros. In later periods, the creature became increasingly mythologized after the rhinoceros was extinct in post-archaic China. By the Song dynasty, it had become a beast of legend, known only through literary references.Literature comparison: For a Xuande mark and period mythical beast-form weight from the Xiaogushan Guan Studio Collection, see Rochers de Lettres, Itineraires de l'Art en Chine, Musee des Arts Asiatiques Guimet, Paris, 2012, cat. no. 58. A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF A TORTOISE AND YOUNG, ATTRIBUTED TO SHISOU, LATE MING DYNASTYChina, 17th century. Well cast as a mother tortoise standing foursquare and lifting its head as its young clambers on her back. Both with their carapaces finely inlaid with silver wire, the mother's deeply incised as well, their faces neatly detailed. Provenance: From a private French collection in Bordeaux. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, few small nicks, light scratches, minor losses to inlays. Fine, naturally grown patina overall.Weight: 365.7 g Dimensions: Length 10.4 cm Little is known about the historical figure Shisou. The earliest reference in the Zhongguo meishujia renming cidian ('Dictionary of Chinese Artists') comes from the Luochuang xiaodu and is presumably from the same source as published in Zhongguo yishujia zhenglue ('Brief Introduction of Chinese Artists'). Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. A number of vessels and sculptures from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century bear his name, sometimes in combination with a hall name, Jinyu tang ('Hall of Prosperity'). Although the present piece is unsigned, the high quality of the casting and fine silver-wire inlays make an attribution to Shisou or a related workshop more than reasonable. The tortoise is one of the Four Fabulous Animals, the most prominent beasts of China. They govern the four points of the compass, with the Black Tortoise as the ruler of the north, symbolizing endurance, strength, and longevity. The tortoise and the tiger are the only real animals of the four, although the tortoise is sometimes depicted with supernatural features such as dragon ears, flaming tentacles, and a long hairy tail - such as the present lot - representing seaweed and the growth of plant parasites found on older tortoise shells that flow behind the tortoise as it swims. The Chinese Imperial Army carried flags with images of dragons and tortoises as symbols of unparalleled power and inaccessibility, as these animals fought with each other but both remained alive.Literature comparison: For an earlier inlaid bronze tortoise-form weight, dated 3rd-2nd century BC, see Christie's New York, The Sze Yuan Tang Archaic Bronzes from the Anthony Hardy Collection, 16 September 2010, lot 907. For an inlaid bronze tortoise-form weight dated Yuan to Ming dynasty, see Christie's Hong Kong, Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 27 November 2013, lot 3584. AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE 'DUCK' PAPERWEIGHT, EARLY QING DYNASTYChina, 17th-18th century. The recumbent bird is boldly cast with its wings tucked to its side and its curved ruyi-form tail feather pointing upwards. The almond-shaped eyes with subtly incised lower lashes beneath stylized swirling head feathers. The intricately patterned wings rest above curling feathers taking the form of archaistic C-scrolls and ruyi heads. The body with minute stippling beneath the duck's wings and extending to the back.Provenance: Dutch trade. Condition: Good condition with significant old wear and expected casting irregularities, light scratches, small nicks, minor dents, few tiny holes probably inherent to manufacturing. The head and tail with remnants of ancient gilt.Weight: 600.9 g Dimensions: Length 12.9 cm This bronze duck is rare as most bronze ducks are cast as incense burners or water droppers, while jade and crystal ducks are carved either in the round or as boxes and covers. The archaistic inspiration is clearly demonstrated in the C-scroll decorations around the wings and relates not only to Song and Ming revival of archaic bronzes but more directly to the Qianlong emperor's instruction to craftsmen to take inspiration from antiquity. See Chang Li-tuan, The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the Ch'ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp. 49-50.The duck is often seen as the symbol of the first scholar, Zhuangyuan. In Chinese, the character for duck, ya, also bears the radical for the word armor, jia, and jia is the word to classify successful candidates in the final civil service exam. Ducks are also symbolic for filial piety and faithfulness, since they are believed to take a life-time partner.Literature comparison:Compare a prototype archaic bronze 'duck' incense burner and cover with similarly styled head and wings, dated mid-Western Han dynasty, at Bonhams Hong Kong, 29 May 2023, lot 321. A LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A TWO-HORNED MYTHICAL BEAST, GAZING AT THE MOON, TANG DYNASTYExpert's note: The pose of this mythical beast reflects depictions of recumbent xiniu and indicates that the present design may have served as a prototype for later depictions of this subject. The design of a xiniu gazing at the moon gained popularity in the Song dynasty and through the 13th and 14th centuries, appearing on Dingyao and Yaozhou bowls and dishes as well as textiles and elsewhere in Chinese decorative arts. The theme is discussed at length by Jan Wirgin, in “Sung Ceramic Designs," B.M.F.E.A., No. 42, Stockholm, 1970, pp. 196-198. According to Wirgin, the term hsi-niu (xiniu) meant rhinoceros in ancient Chinese texts, but the rhinoceros became extinct in the post-archaic period, and by the Song dynasty the xiniu had become a beast of legend, known only through literary references. The design of a xiniu gazing at the moon illustrates the popular myth that the unique crescent-shaped horns of the rhinoceros enable the beast to magically “communicate with the sky". The powers attributed to the horns of the rhinoceros in the Song dynasty continued to gain in complexity and popularity in later periods.China, 618-907. Resting on a massive rectangular base, the mythical beast strongly resembles a two-horned xiniu gazing at the moon and sits recumbent with its head turned back towards its haunches. The creature has its tail tucked underneath it, visibly resting atop its right-back leg. Breathing out the wind, the curling whisps surround a moon-like disk above the beast's abdomen. The wrinkled brow of the beast animates its wide-open eyes as it strains to breathe out. The stone contains natural veins of a light-red hue.Provenance: From the collection of Bo Ive (1922-1981), Denmark, and thence by descent within the same family.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, scratches, nicks, chips, minor losses, signs of weathering and erosion, the stone with natural fissures.Weight: 6.8 kgDimensions: Length 25 cm Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 23 March 2012, lot 1762Price: USD 16,250 or approx. As noted by Pal, it is known that Kashmiri artists were physically present in Western Tibetan monasteries during the 11th and 12th centuries (see Pal, Bronzes of Kashmir, New York, 1975, p.241). Given its geographical proximity, the art of northwestern India had a more immediate influence on the evolution of early Western Tibetan style than Pala art. The base is sealed. Fine, naturally grown patina with some cuprite and malachite encrustations.Weight: 826.6 g Dimensions: Height 17.3 cm The deity Kunzang Akor is the meditational form of Shenlha Okar. As in the present example, he is generally recognized by the Tibetan letter 'AH' placed on the chest at the level of the heart. The two hands are placed in the lap and hold the stems of two flower blossoms supporting a stylized yungdrung symbol on the right and a vase on the left. There are numerous traditions of ritual cycles and meditation practices for Kunzang Akor. It is also common to have a sculpture of Kunzang Akor created as a death memorial. While in Tibetan Buddhism it is more common to have a painting created in memoriam, a sculpture is more common in the Bon Religion. The Tibetan lettering on the chest, not found on Buddhist sculpture, confirms that this deity is from the Bon tradition. For a closely related example, see S. Karmay and J. Astutely constructed of several wood sections, and masterfully carved seated in dhyanasana with his hands resting in dhyana mudra, wearing loosely draped robes with deeply carved folds falling over both shoulders and arms, tied below the bare chest. The belt and undergarment each with a neatly carved scroll design. His serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes below arched brows, his bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by long pendulous lobes. R 245170A, 6 October 2023, based on one sample taken from the base of the figure, is consistent with the dating of this lot. The report states two intervals of dates between 1692 and 1918: [1692-1727] AD (probability of 25,7%) and [1810-1918] AD (probability of 69,7%). A copy of the detailed scientific report accompanies this lot.Provenance: Collection particuliere française. One of the earliest tombs to contain sancai pieces was that of Li Feng, Prince of Guo (622-675), fifteenth son of Emperor Gaozu, founder of the Tang dynasty. By the first decade of the 8th century, large sancai figures were included in the tombs of royalty and nobility both at the capital Chang'an (modern day Xian) and at Luoyang, which served as the Eastern Capital in the Tang period. The inclusion of large sancai figures declined significantly following the An Lushan rebellion of 755-763, which had a devastating effect on the empire, seriously weakening the dynasty, and leading to the loss of the Western Regions.Expert's note: Based on the size and quality of the modeling of the present lot, and considering the known examples of Lokapala in public collections, both in China and around the world, it is obvious that the current figure hails from the tomb of an elite individual.

Luristan bronze objects came to the notice of the world art market from the late 1920s onwards. They were excavated in considerable quantities by local people and are found today in many of the world's most important museums. The Master of Animals is a motif in ancient art showing a human between and grasping two confronted animals. The subject is widespread in the art of the Ancient Near East and Egypt. Although such figures are not all deities, the term may be a generic name for several deities from a variety of cultures with close relationships to the animal kingdom or in part animal form (in cultures where that is not the norm). These figures control animals and are responsible for their continued reproduction and availability for hunters. The Greek god shown as 'Master of Animals' is usually Apollo, one of the gods of the hunt. Shiva has the epithet Pasupathi meaning the 'Lord of animals', and these figures may derive from an archetype. Chapter 39 of the Book of Job has been interpreted as an assertion of the deity of the Hebrew Bible as Master of Animals.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Luristan bronze standard finial, 19.2 cm high, also dated circa 1000-650 BC, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.76.97.91. A BRASS FIGURE OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI, INDIA, 16TH-17TH CENTURYWell cast to depict the eight-armed goddess Durga slaying Mahishasura just as the demon emerges from the decapitated body of the buffalo, all raised on a stepped rectangular base incised with cross-hatched lines. The goddess's right foot rests on the back of her lion vehicle, who roars in victory as the figure delivers the death blow with her trident while grasping the demon's head. Her radiating arms hold her attributes, the trident, club, lotus, sword, chakra, conch, bow and arrow. The brass with a rich, naturally grown, pale red patina. Provenance: From the private collection of Madeleine and Erich Dammann, no. 76, and thence by descent. Newlyweds Madeleine and Erich Dammann embarked on their first trip to India in 1950, driven by their curiosity about foreign cultures. Settling in Switzerland in 1963, Erich worked as a television editor and worked for Rundschau which specialized in reports from around the world, enabling him to travel extensively and collect art and objects from different cultures. Madeleine often joined him on these explorations. Over 50 years, their shared passion led to a diverse collection encompassing everyday objects, furniture, weapons, masks, musical instruments, jewelry, and more. The collection became an integral part of their family's life, shaping their home visually and emotionally. Condition: Very good condition with distinct old wear, mostly from extended worshipping within the culture, and expected casting irregularities, as well as small nicks, light scratches, minor dents. The aureole is lost.Weight: 1,275 g Dimensions: Height 17.8 cm The warrior manifestation of Adi Parashakti or Mahadevi (the Supreme Being in Shaktism) is represented in her most popular form as Mahishasuramardini (Slayer of the Buffalo Demon). Whilst representations of Durga can have between two and twenty arms, in medieval Indian art she is most often shown with only eight or ten arms. The weapons that Durga holds were bestowed upon her by male Hindu deities. Here, she holds Vishnu's conch (shankha) and disc-like weapon (Sudarshana Chakra) in her upper pair of hands, whereas her two principal, lower hands push Shiva's massive trident into Mahishasura's chest. The artist brilliantly captures the ultimate culmination of this fierce battle, when the powerful demon humbly realizes Durga's blatant superiority in the very moment of his death. The demon in human form emerges from the neck of his buffalo guise. The buffalo's body supports the foot of Durga's bent right leg, whilst the foot of her outstretched left leg rests on the back of her mount (vahana), a lion.Goddess Durga fought Mahishasura for 10 whole days. The shape-shifting demon was no match for the radiant and strong goddess. On the tenth day, she slayed him. The nine days of battle became what is celebrated today as Hindu festival of Navaratri, and the tenth day-the day of victory-is Vijaya Dashami.Durga's serene, calm and graceful face starkly contrasts with the lion's unleashed force and the demon's last rearing up. The crescent moon in her crown alludes to her association with Shiva, whose Shakti (female creative energy) is known in various manifestations, such as Sati, Parvati, Durga or Kall.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's New York, 20 March 2008, lot 345 Price: USD 5,000 or approx. A LARGE AND RARE 'QILIN, MYTHICAL HOUND AND BUDDHIST LION' JAR, MING DYNASTY, JIAJING PERIOD, 1521-1567Expert's note: The combination of iron-red and green glazes was utilized primarily during the Jiajing period (1521-1567). According to Daisy Lion-Goldschmidt in Ming Porcelain, New York, 1978, page 164, in her discussion of the 'Red-and-Green' Group, this palette would come to dominate polychrome porcelains, eventually leading to the appearance of famille verte during the second half of the seventeenth century.China. Covered overall with a finely crackled transparent glaze of a pale-ivory tone, the interior with a dark brown glaze.Provenance: The J. M. Hu, Zande Lou Collection. An old, padded silk box fitted to the vase accompanies the lot. Jenmou Hu (1911-1995) was arguably the most important collector of Chinese ceramics in the last century. In both his personal collection and in his bequests to cultural institutions, J. M. Hu stood as a model of the modern scholar-collector. The eldest son of the influential banker Hu Chun, he was raised in an elegant private residence amongst his many stepbrothers and stepsisters. In keeping with tradition, he was given a rigorous background in the Chinese classics, supplemented by a Western-style education. He first encountered Chinese ceramics during his student years, when he purchased a nineteenth-century brush washer for his desk. This initial foray into collecting would become emblematic of J. M. Hu's poignant relationship with art: even amidst the upheavals of war and the evolution of his collection, the modest brush-washer stayed with him until his death in 1995. Hu's boyhood studies within the Chinese literati tradition greatly informed his philosophical approach to life and collecting; humble and erudite, he consistently affirmed that it was the visceral connection between a collector and his acquisitions that was of essential importance. True value, in J. M. Hu's estimation, lay far beyond monetary worth. A noted traditionalist, he went to great lengths designing wooden stands and fitted boxes to preserve and display his Chinese treasures and delighted in sharing the collection with fellow connoisseurs. For J. M. Hu, collecting was a serious, scholarly pursuit not to be taken lightly. The joy of art came with a responsibility to honor both the artist and the object. Hu often spoke of the three necessary criteria in collecting: zhen (authenticity), jing (rarity and quality), and xin (condition). Yet it was an individual's bond with a work of art, as evidenced in J. M. Hu's beloved brush washer, that was of fundamental significance. In handling and examining his ceramics, Hu sought that indefinable delight that could come only from the beauty of artistry. In the tradition of Chinese literati who bestowed symbolic monikers upon their studios, libraries, and collections, the name of J. M. Hu's studio, Zande Lou, referenced the influential Lanting Xu of the famed Jin dynasty calligrapher Wang Xizhi, a text that describes Zande as a person's inner happiness. Although J. M. Hu intended the meaning of Zande to express this fleeting happiness, which he experienced as a collector when examining an object, the word has also come to be interpreted as the inherently transitory nature of collecting and possessing fine art. J. M. Hu's collection of Chinese ceramics provided abundant opportunity for personal scholarship and historical investigation. As early as the 1940s, he longed for a welcoming social environment where like-minded collectors could share and discuss art and objects. Two decades later, he established the Min Chiu Society in Hong Kong alongside fellow collectors K.P. Chen and J.S. Lee. A noted cultural philanthropist, J. M. Hu gifted substantial groupings from his collection to the Shanghai Museum in 1950 and again in 1989. Many of these objects remain on view in the museum's Zande Lou Gallery. To this day, J. M. Hu remains a celebrated figure amongst collectors of Chinese art. Condition: Remarkably well preserved, commensurate with age.
