French School, late 19th centuryFashionable figures with bathing machines and donkeys on a beachoil on canvas61 x 107cmProvenance: The Estate of Sir Jack and Lady Baer.Condition ReportThe canvas is lined. Under UV light, there is some retouching to the lower right portion of the canvas, with some small flecks in places elsewhere, most notably a small repaired tear to the lower left. The painting is well presented in a gilt frame and ready to hang.
English School, 19th centuryPortrait sketch of a young girl, half-length, in a brown shirtoil on canvas46 x 41cmProvenance: The Estate of Sir Jack and Lady Baer.Condition ReportFramed size: 63 x 57.5cmThe canvas is lined. Under UV light, there are scattered retouchings apparent in places throughout the composition, mainly to the back ground, edges of the canvas and corresponding to stretcher marks. There is, however, some careful infilling of craquelure to the face and figure with minimal touches of paint, and further touches to the right side.Well presented in a Watts style frame, ready to hang.
Ernest Ange Duez (French, 1843-1896)Blue hydrangeassigned 'E. Duez' l.r., oil on canvas74 x 54cmProvenance: The Estate of Sir Jack and Lady Baer.Condition ReportOverall: 92 x 72cmthe canvas is unlined. There is a little craquelure. Under UV light, there is evidence of some isolated spots and flecks in places throughout the composition, most significantly to the leaves bottom centre and around the edges due to peripheral frame rubbing. It is not clear the reason for these retouchings, possibly there has been some flaking in the past which has been consolidated.
Attributed to Friedrich Carl Gröger (German, 1766-1838)Portrait of Field-Marshal Prince Gebhard von Blücher (1742-1819), bust-length, in uniformwith copy inscription 'Gröger pinx 1816' verso (on re-lining), oil on canvas27 x 33cmCondition ReportThe painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. Although the canvas tension is stiff, the picture has undulations across the surface. At the lower edge a deformation has been caused by debris trapped between the lower stretcher bar and the canvas. The paint layers are stable overall, some age cracks in the sitter’s face are slightly raised but secure. The varnish is glossy and even but is starting to degraded with matte patches occurring following lines of age cracks. There is a light layer of dirt across the surface.
Circle of Samuel Woodforde (1763-1817)Portrait of a lady, bust-length in profile, in a white dressoil on canvas61 x 51cmCondition ReportThe canvas is unlined. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks, which has begun to make the surface is a little uneven. There are a few touches of discoloured restoration to the skin tones where there has been an attempt to infill the craquelure, see illustration. Under UV light, the surface is fluorescing however, this appears to be an effect of pooling varnish rather than any further signs of restoration. Generally therefore, the painting is in original condition. It would be fairly straightforward for a restorer to remove the discolouration to the face and re-apply.
Circle of George Richmond (1809-1896)Portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length seated, in a silver dress and a crimson shawl wearing a white lace bonnet with pink flowersoil on canvas89 x 70cmCondition Reportoverall: 107.5 85cmPlease note the size should read: 89 x 70cm. The canvas has been lined. There are stretcher marks and some craquelure apparent. Covered with a layer of surface dirt and would benefit from a light clean. There is a dent to the upper right of the canvas, where the surface has received pressure from the front which has left an indent. There is possibly a repaired tear to the upper left background. The surface is covered with a thick and dirty varnish layer which makes any reading under UV light difficult, however, there are some small retouchings to the bosom and to the forehead, and small specks elsewhere.
