OVERTON, Henry (publisher) 'View's of All the Cathedrall Churches of England and Wales &c Neatly Engrav'd' Rebound in quarter brown goat with cloth boards, twenty-nine engraved plates with a bi-lingual English and French engraved title page by John Harris (and Elisha Kirkall, although her name does not appear on the plates), a repair to one plate, fine text block with some very light sporadic finger soiling (if one is being pedantic), a very scarce work, Henry Overton, London, [c.1730].The plates on show were reissued, from a larger and earlier work 'Britannia Illustrata'. During the 1710s Overton was a joint owner of these plates, and it was surely while selling their large, unwieldy offprints that he developed the idea of reducing the successful designs into a more practical pocket-sized volume, which also advertised his ownership of the originals. With its competent engravings and elegant title-page this small set was scarcely less luxurious than the original, however, or more widely available. A fine copy of a scarce work. Four Chromolithographs in two frames by C. Shultz After Stephan Lothener The annunciation from the two exterior panels of the triptych in the cathedral at CologneAnd St Ursula and her virgins; st Gereon and his warriorsPrinted by Hangard-Mauge Arundel Society London 1875Two largest panels 38.5cm x 21cm There is a considerable amount of spotting to the underside of the glass, which doesn't give the best account of the condition of the chromos and mounts. Once a light is shone it casts a shadow. The chromo's themselves show no real issues with conditions.
