Edward Seago, R.W.S.,. 1910-1974. last light on the orwell, signed; titled on the reverse, oil on board, 56x91.5cm.; 22x36in. The estuary of the River Orwell was amongst Seago's favourite painting locations.. Born in Norwich and following on in the tradition of Norwich School artists such as Cotman and Crome, Seago is synonymous with the landscape around the city of his birth. He later recalled that, 'had I lived elsewhere I imagine my work would have been different and would, I suppose, have developed in quite another way' (Seago in J.Reid, Edward Seago, The Landscape Art, London 1991, p.95).. Although East Anglian in subject, the composition and colours of the present work also show the artist's regard for the Nocturnes by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). The horizontal emphasis of the present composition is contrasted to the upright masts of the boats and is highly reminiscent of Whistler's Nocturne in Blue and Silver (circa 1871-2, Harvard University Art Museums, no.1943.176).
