Born in 1946 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, he was educated at the Newport College of Art. He was a part-time lecturer in Art, and as a freelance artist he was involved in a wide range of work from book and magazine illustration. The list of VC actions depicted in this lot are as follows:1. Sergeants John Berryman VC and John Farrell VC, 17th Lancers, and Corporal Joseph Malone VC, 13th Light Dragoons, help to assist Captain Alexander Webb, 17th Lancers, from the Balaclava battlefield, during the return from the Charge of the Light Brigade, Crimean War, 25 October 1854. 2. Captain Charles Russell VC and Private Robert Palmer VC, Grenadier Guards, showed great gallantry during the fierce fighting at the Sandbag Battery at Inkerman, Crimean War, 5 November 1854. 3. Bugler Robert Hawthorne VC, 52nd Light Infantry, assists Lieutenant Philip Salkeld VC, Bengal Engineers, during the storming of the Kashmir Gate at Delhi, Indian Mutiny, 14 September 1857. 4. Lieutenant Henry Lysons VC, and Private Edmund Fowler VC, 90th Light Infantry, storming a Zulu stronghold at Hlobane Mountain, Zulu War, 28 March 1879. Colonel Evelyn Wood, a VC himself, described the action as: `The bravest deed I have ever seen performed in my life.` 5. A British 19th Century ship`s figurehead of carved wood depicting a woman in Grecian-style flowing dress wearing a circlet of laurel leaves and holding a shield charged with the coat of arms of the Royal burgh of Renfrew and the motto "DEUS UBERNAT NAVEM" and "SICILIUM COMUNE RENFREW", with remnants of paintwork in white and light blue, 72in. long x 22in. at the base.
"My dear little pal, lena", a typed letter from Stan laurel`s father "AJ" to Lena dated 17th September 1933, also with handwritten paragraph and signed "Uncle Jeff XXXXX". NB: This highly personal and unpublished letter sheds interesting light on this late era in AJ`s career, including his minor role in "The Southern Maid" (sic) and how he was "just pinning to get a job again in my own line, but its seems as far off as ever." He also mentions that he had "not heard from Stan for ages" wondering if "his domestic troubles are settled" and fearing that it "is bound to affect their popularity".

"Marked "AHK 830 S"; a late 19th Century amethyst and silver pendant, the oval mixed-cut amethyst collet set within a pierced scroll work surmount suspending a pear-cut amethyst drop; three Art Nouveau silver buttons, depicting a female head; a silver and enamel brooch, the raised and pierced central boss set with pale blue enamel decorations with pierced scroll work terminals, suspending an oval link chain with three blue and white enamel flowerheads and tapering blue enamel drop. Stamped "830S"; a late 19th Century enamel and silver pendant, the stylised mount set with light and mid blue enamel suspending an enamelled drop on silver chain with two enamelled spacers. Clifford, the carpet and rugs decorated with stylised flowers on light green and puce ground, largest 15ft 1in. x 10ft 2in. (460 x 310cms). PROVENANCE: Sommersby House, Pollokshields, Glasgow, thence by decent to the vendor NB: H.E. Clifford was the architect for Sommersby House. Which was probably built for a Mr. W. Douglas Maitland. E. Clifford. He is a classicist, yet he does not sacrifice rationality for style; he is in fact an individualist free from the modern taint of eccentricity. Somersby House is a recent example of his architecture ; it stands in one of the most popular residential districts of Glasgow, and is built of fine yellow stone, in the style of the Scottish Renaissance, the elevation suggesting a strength"
