Miller (Philip) The Gardeners Dictionary, seventh edition, engraved frontispiece and 19 plates, engraved head-piece to dedication, woodcut illustrations, contemporary ink annotations throughout (very slightly cropped), light foxing to frontispiece, plate of Polygala torn and repaired, 7C1 with tear to lower margin (repaired), marginal water- and damp-staining towards end causing final leaves to adhere at foot, contemporary mottled calf, gilt, rubbed, rebacked preserving old gilt spine, corners repaired, folio, for the Author, sold by John Rivington [& others], 1759; sold not subject to return⁂ Some of the annotations relate to the owner's experiences of growing particular items e.g. Egyptian Acacia and Amaryllis; others are references to articles in periodicals, particularly Philosophical Transactions. Many are extensive e.g. CELTIS contains a note on the Bishop of London's garden in Fulham in the late 17th century which contained many exotic plants and trees "but left to the management of Ignorant persons" were later removed, and under QUERCUS "See experiments concerning the Life of the Agaric of the Oak in stopping Haemorrhages".

Chivalric epic poetry.- Alamanni (Luigi) Gyrone Il Cortese, collation: a8 a-y8 z4, double column, italic type, title and woodcut printer's device within ornate segmented woodcut architectural border, large criblé initial, errata f. at end, armorial ink stamp to title, some small areas of marginal water-staining, small marginal repairs to s6-u1, a few small stains, contemporary limp vellum, labels removed from spine, some light staining, small 4to (203 x 147mm.), Paris, Regnault & Claude Chaudière, 1548.⁂ A very good copy of this chivalric epic, adapted from the French medieval romance of Giron le Courtois. Alamanni was favoured by François I after fleeing to France following the discovery his leadership in an anti-Medici plot. The work is dedicated to Henri II.

Charge of the Light Brigade.- Nolan (Edward Henry) The History of the War Against Russia Illustrated, vol. IV only, signed and inscribed by John Bevin, wounded and captured in the Charge of the Light Brigade, inscribed on front free endpaper, engraved plates, slightly browned, original gilt pictorial cloth, slightly rubbed, 8vo, [1856].⁂ Inscription reads: "Sergeant Major John Dunedin Police 8th K.R.I. Hussars. Served in the Crimea and Turkey in Europe and Turkey in Asia in 1854 & 1855 one of the six hundred Vol. 4th."

A 19th Century facet cut glass toddy lifter of mallet form, 13 cm high, together with a plain glass stirrup cup of boot form, 14.5 cm high, another smaller similar stirrup cup, 8.5 cm high and a plain glass pipe, 23 cm long (4) CONDITION REPORTS Glass pipe - with various chips and losses to the bowl and to the mouthpiece. A 19th Century French brass cased cartel style wall clock in the Louis XV taste with harebell and acanthus decoration, the twin fusee eight day movement by 'Vincenti' stamped verso "Vincenti 1855 Medaille D'Argent" with circular enamel dial with Arabic and Roman numerals, movement stamped verso 5908-A.1, 55 cm high CONDITION REPORTS There is wear and patination to the metal work throughout. Some minor knocks, the enamel dial has some light surface scratches, possibly a replacement, and some chips around the holes. Glass also has some chips to the edge. Under UV light postcode is visible in the top right hand corner. Some small areas of flaking. Rubbed along the line to the edge of the frame. Generally dirty and in need of a clean with spots of dirt in various places. Woodworm evident to the stretcher at the back. Frame has wear to the gilding and some cracks, losses, etc. throughout.
