Waterton (Charles). Wanderings in South America, the North-West of the United States, and the Antilles, in the Years 1812, 1816, 1820, and 1824. With original instructions for the perfect preservation of birds &c. for cabinets of natural history, 1st edition, London: printed for J. Mawman, 1825, half title, engraved frontispiece, some light spotting, later ink stamp 'printed in Great Britain' at foot of title, bookplate, original cloth-backed boards, joints splitting, corners repaired, 4to, with a loosely inserted 1 pp. autograph letter signed from Charles Waterton to Charles Watson, August 10, 1852, Walton Hall, Wakefield, on taxidermy, 'Humming birds have very thick skins, and this makes the operation of taking them off an easy task. But as for restoring their form and feature, all I can say is, that mode of stuffing now in use, or to speak more knowingly, the art of taxidermy is so utterly deficient in real science that I have never yet found satisfaction in any specimen that has come under my inspection - I am delighted to learn by your letter that you are able to retain the scales of fish in their pristine splendor - nothing now is wanted to give us the fish as it ought to be... should you have a little time on hand to spare, I shall be most happy to see you here and show you my lions... I have somewhere about 35 herons nests this year; and the carrion crows, magpies and jackdaws have bred plentifully.", with a letter written to the verso presumably by Watson regarding the origin of English words from the German, Danish and Swedish languages, seal removed (with resultant hole), postmarks , old folds, plus 2 others: Charles Waterton's Essays on Natural History, chiefly ornithology, 2 volumes, 2nd edition, 1838, and Alfred Russel Wallace's A Narrative of Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro, The Minerva Library of Famous Books, 2nd edition, 1889QTY: (5)NOTE:Charles Waterton (1782-1865) was a pioneering naturalist, whose expeditions to the forests of Guyana are recounted in Wanderings in South America... He created one of the earliest nature reserves at his Walton Hall home, enclosing the estate with high walls and encouraging wildlife. His system of preserving birds and mammals consisted not of stuffing the specimen but carefully removing the skin and slowly hardening it with mercuric chloride. He married Anne, the daughter of Scots planter Charles Edmonstone in 1829, and trained a number of Edmonstone's slaves in taxidermy, including John Edmonstone, who later gave lessons to Charles Darwin.
