A late 80s ladies Tag Heuer bracelet wristwatch Condition reports provided on request by email for this auction otherwise items purchased `as seen`The watch is unboxed and has no paperwork.The condition is very nice, there is no major damage or other issues. There are some light surface scratches on the bezel and the strap but the face looks good. It was well looked after.It does not seem to be working at the moment probably needs a new battery, but the winding works well and the hands move nicely.

Hailing from an illustrious family (neé Joan Gilbert Scott, her great-grandfather George was the architect of St Panras Station while her uncle, Sir Giles, designed Battersea and Bankside power stations - the latter now Tate Modern - as well as the iconic red telephone box) she studied art in London before moving to Cornwall in the late 1950s. JAMES B. A. 'JIMMY': (1915-2008) British Squadron Leader with the Royal Air Force. A Prisoner of War from 1940-45, James made numerous efforts to escape from various POW and Concentration Camps, most famously from Stalag Luft III in March 1944 as part of the 'Great Escape'. A selection of five note and exercise books of different sizes, each featuring various manuscript notes by James relating to his linguistic studies in Russian and Czech (1), mainly late 1940s to 1950s, and one dated 1976, the notes including military and technical vocabulary and featuring the Russian words for air force, armour, aeronautics, bomb, camouflage, coastal command, refuel, report for duty, sortie, target, throttle, weather conditions etc., notes taken in conjunction with linguaphone lessons and covering more commonly used Russian vocabulary in relation to hotels, restaurants etc., notes made for James's Russian revision over eight lessons in 1976 and detailing various useful words and phrases etc., and one notebook containing a few pages of Czech words for days of the week, months, numerals etc. Two of the notebooks bear the ink ownership signature ('B. A. James') of James to the front covers. Some light overall age wear, G, 5 James achieved a Royal Society of Arts qualification in Russian and began learning the language whilst imprisoned at Stalag Luft III during breaks in the preparation for 'The Great Escape'. He was also the founder of the Anglo-Russian Friendship Association.

A comprehensive collection of correspondence, notes, documents, manuscripts and typescripts etc. relating to High Noon of Empire - The Diary of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Tyndall 1895-1915, edited by James and published in 2007. The archive includes the original photocopies of Tyndall's diary from which James worked, the neatly penned entries with occasional pencil annotations in the hand of James, an extensive selection of manuscript notes made by James whilst editing the diaries and researching the subject matter, covering the Indian Mutiny, the Malakand Field Force, Winston Churchill, the Afghan War etc., James's manuscript footnotes to the diaries, details of the historical background to the diaries, manuscript index to the book, biographical details relating to Tyndall etc., some newspaper articles and maps, three original typescripts of the manuscript with numerous corrections and annotations by James, a large collection of correspondence relating to the research and publication of the book, most of the letters accompanied by James's carbon typed copies of his correspondence (some signed) and dating from 1990 onwards, including letters to and from the India Office Library and Records, the Ministry of Defence, the Principal Registry of the Family Division, the National Army Museum, the Royal Society for Asian Affairs, The British Library, the Illustrated London News, the author Evelyn Hart, Sir Bruce Stirling Hamilton, Joanna MacKinnon (great niece of Tyndall), John Laffin (who wrote the introduction to the book) as well as many publishing houses, largely being letters of rejection although some also adding positive and constructive comments, including Cassell, Routledge, John Murray ('I have now read a good deal of it, and I must say I enjoyed it, but despite that I'm afraid I don't see how we could promote and sell it effectively in today's crowded and difficult market'), The Memoir Club ('I read of your work with interest…..with a foreword by such an eminent military historian, [it] should prove to be a very credible book'), Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Andre Deutsch, Constable ('You have done a very good job of providing a background to British rule in India and the diary is certainly a useful and unusual document…..I am not convinced that we would be able to sell it in sufficient quantities - the passing of the 50th anniversary of Indian Independence makes me even more doubtful'), Oxford University Press, Jonathan Cape, Penguin etc., also including the original Memorandum of Agreement between James and Pen & Sword Books Ltd. agreeing to the publication of the book and detailing the royalty payments etc., signed by James and dated 27th September 2006, and an unsigned hardback First Edition copy of the book, accompanied by the dust jacket. FR to generally G to VG, Qty 'Henry Tyndall served as an officer in the 40th Pathans from 1895 to 1925 on the North West Frontier and India, including three years in East Africa in World War II. During this time he kept a diary up to 1915. This contains a good account of the Malakand Campaign of 1897, one of the biggest operations ever against the tribes of the Frontier in which Tyndall describes meeting the young Winston Churchill…..He goes on to describe the life in cantonments in India. It was the high noon of Empire and the diary casts an interesting light on the mind [of a] typical Indian Army Officer of the time and on the customs and social life of the military and civilian elite…..' (extract from the synopsis to Tyndall's Diary prepared by James).
GREAT ESCAPE THE: A paperback edition of The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill, published by Cassell, 2004, individually signed to the half title page by Jimmy James ('B. A. “Jimmy” James, No 39 out of “Harry”'), Ken Rees ('Ken Rees, Digger on “Harry”, At end of tunnel when it was discovered') and also bearing a small white sticker neatly affixed to the half title page signed by David Jones ('Davy Jones, Doolittle Raider & POW Tunneller'). Together with William Ash (1917-2004) American-born British Fighter Pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. A Prisoner of War from 1942-45, Ash was held at Stalag Luft III in Sagan at the time of the Great Escape, although did not participate as he was locked up in the 'cooler' as punishment for other attempted escapes. A.L.S., Bill, one page, 4to, London, 6th November 2006, to Paul. Ash apologies for having caused some confusion with another Paul ('I'm afraid this is the sort of thing that happens if you get involved with someone 89 years old whose brain isn't what it used to be') and forwarding a signed photograph of him in his spitfire. Also including the photograph referred to, a signed and inscribed 11.5 x 8.5 light card reproduction image of Ash flying his spitfire aircraft. The slightly grainy image is signed to a light area by Ash in black ink, 'Best wishes to Paul from Tex Ash'. Generally VG, 3 Following his death in 2004 a number of obituaries stated that Ash was said to have been the model for Virgil Hilts, portrayed by Steve McQueen in the film The Great Escape (1963). The character Hilts was nicknamed 'the cooler king' for the time spent in the prison camp's punishment block, however Ash modestly denied being the inspiration for McQueen's role, remarking that he didn't ride a motorbike.
MARY OF TECK: (1867-1953) Queen Consort of the United Kingdom 1910-36, wife of King George V. An unusual vintage World War II date signed postcard photograph, the image depicting the Queen standing outdoors in a full length pose, with a saw in her hand, being assisted by two uniformed men as she cuts the branch of a tree. Signed ('Mary R') in fountain pen ink to a light area of the image and dated 1942 in her hand. With an autograph note to the verso, beneath the facsimile words 'with best wishes', stating 'cutting down trees at Badminton with my dispatch riders, not bad at 75!'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Queen Mary spent World War II in residence at Badminton House, the Gloucestershire home of her niece, Mary Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort. In 1942, the same year in which the present photograph was signed, Queen Mary's youngest surviving son, Prince George, Duke of Kent, was killed in an air crash whilst on active service.
EISENHOWER DWIGHT D.: (1890-1969) American General of World War II. American President 1953-61. T.L.S., with his initials D.E., to the inside of an attractive folding small 8vo greetings card produced by SHAPE, n.p. (Paris?), 2nd January 1952, to Kay [Summersby]. Eisenhower writes, in full, 'I should have replied earlier to your Season's greetings card but work and travel interfered. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. It was nice to know that so many friends of World War II days were having a reunion during the Holidays. I should certainly like to see them all. I send to you very best wishes for a fine 1952'. The front of the card features an attractive colour design of the SHAPE headquarters with thirteen national flags flying above, including those of the United Kingdom, United States of America, France and Italy. To the verso appears the green and gold embossed emblem of SHAPE featuring the Latin motto Vigilia Pretium Libertatis ('Vigilance is the Price of Liberty'). A letter of good association. Some very light creasing and age wear, otherwise VG Kay Summersby (1908-1975) Irish-born American Chauffeur and Personal Secretary to Eisenhower. The two enjoyed a close relationship whilst Eisenhower was serving as Supreme Commander Allied Expeditionary Force from 1943-45. Eisenhower served as the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe from 1951-52, at the time the present letter was signed, leaving office on 30th May 1952 in order to enter the United States Presidential race as a Republican.
BADER & GALLAND: Douglas Bader (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognised for his important role during the Battle of Britain. Signed colour 6 x 4 postcard issued by the Battle of Britain museum and featuring an illustration of a Hurricane 1 aircraft. Signed by Bader in black ink with his name alone to a clear area of the image; Adolf Galland (1912-1996) German Fighter Pilot of World War II, Knight's Cross winner with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Signed 4 x 6 postcard photograph of Galland standing in a three quarter length pose at the side of his aircraft, surrounded by several other officers. Signed by Galland in bold black ink with his name alone to a light area of the image. VG to EX, 2
BATTLE OF BRITAIN: A large 9 x 6 colour postcard featuring a reproduction of an artist’s image entitled Battle of Britain Salute, issued by the RAF Benevolent Fund in 1990 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, individually signed by over forty fighter pilots and aircrew who participated in the Battle of Britain including Roger Hall, Bunny Currant, David Hunt, John Kemp, William Blackadder, Christopher Riddle, Patrick Jameson, Bertie Wootton, Leonard Bartlett, Jackie Mann, Jimmy Hayter, Roy McGowan, John Down, Jack Steere, Norman Ryder, John Patterson, John Gard’ner, Norman Barron, John Greenwood, Eric Edmunds, Mick Shand (participated in The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944) etc. Most have signed in bold blue or black inks to clear areas of the image and many have also added their Squadrons beneath their signatures. Ambrose, published by Pocket Books for Simon & Schuster Ltd., London, 2001, individually signed to two inside pages by seven American officers known as the Band of Brothers, each of them associated with the Parachute Infantry Regiments of World War II, comprising Richard Winters, Forrest Guth, Don Malarkey, J. B. Stokes, Shifty Powers, Lynn ‘Buck’ Compton and William ‘Wild Bill’ Guarnere. Most have added their regiment details etc. alongside their signatures. DOOLITTLE RAIDERS: A good First Day Cover issued to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the First Operational use of the Mitchell by the Royal Air Force and featuring a colour illustration of Doolittle’s aircraft flying over Tokyo harbour in April 1942, individually signed by James Doolittle and fourteen other crew members who participated in the Doolittle Raid comprising Richard Cole (co-pilot), Henry Potter (navigator), Charles Ozuk (navigator), Harry McCool (navigator), David Jones (pilot), Chase Nielsen (navigator), David Thatcher (flight engineer/gunner), Nolan Herndon (navigator/bombardier), J. Royden Stork (co-pilot), William Birch (bombardier), William Bower (pilot), Clayton Campbell (navigator), Robert Hite (co-pilot) and Jacob De Shazer (bombardier). All have signed in various coloured inks, largely to clear areas. Together with a paperback edition of Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo by Ted Lawson, published by Infantry Journal, Penguin Books, second printing, April 1944, signed by David Thatcher (flight engineer/gunner and Lawson’s fellow crew member on the seventh B-25 Mitchell bomber to fly in the Doolittle Raid) in blue ink to the title page, and also including a paperback edition of Destination: Tokyo – A Pictorial History of Doolittle’s Tokyo Raid by Stan Cohen, published by the Pictorial Histories Publishing Company, Missoula, Montana, eighth printing, October 1998, signed and inscribed by Chase Nielsen to the half title page and also featuring eleven individually signed white stickers by various crew members who also participated in the Doolittle Raid, each neatly laid down to the half title page, comprising Charles Ozuk, Nolan Herndon, Robert Hite, Harry McCool, J. [THIRD REICH AVIATION]: REITSCH HANNA: (1912-1979) German Aviatrix, a test pilot for many of the aircraft produced during the Nazi regime. A.L.S., Hanna, one page, 4to, Frankfurt, 15th August 1978, to Captain Barry Radley. Reitsch writes a friendly letter in English and enquires if her correspondent will come to the 22nd SETP symposium, remarking 'I will be there - will arrive early morning at the 26th of Sept and join the excursion to Pasadena. I hope to meet you both there. Despite many friends there I would feel “lonely” without you both and would miss you both…..' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Reitsch to her correspondent at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG
