A set of two carver arm and eight single late Georgian mahogany dining chairs, each with bowed top rail and moulded stiles and with stuffover seat and raised on ring turned front legs (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Having had a good look at these chairs we find that two of the six single chairs are later replacements. The colour of the timber is slightly different however similar enough not to be problematic. The two replacement chairs are in good order. All other chairs are structurally sound. They have clearly been through a workshop in recent times (within the last 20 years). They have numerous repairs in all of the typical places, namely the tops of the stiles and where the bowed top rails meet the stiles. The rear legs have also been filled and pegged. There are some repairs to the knees on the front legs also. One armchair has had a substantial break to the top of each stile but the repair if structurally sound although visible from the rear. The same armchair has an open break on the right hand side of the back support. The seats are reasonably well upholstered. However being a light colour there are stains and marks to most of the seats. They are comfortable to sit on and if the seats will not clean then it is a question of recovering rather than full reupholstering. There are some losses of polish to the bowed top rails on three of the chairs. One of the single chairs has a very visible repair to the bowed top rail. Again this is structurally sound. We cannot see any evidence of any woodworm.

Los 528

A 19th century oil painting on canvas, of a shipwreck, 50 cm x 64 cm, framed, relined. CONDITION REPORT: The painting has been relined. The relining appears to be covering at least one canvas repair. Looking at the painting from the front there is a 3 cm x 2 cm oval wear overpainting is visible and a corresponding raised section on the back of the canvas behind the relining. The painting is reasonably flat but does have universal craquelure. There are no current areas of lifting paint. We have looked at the painting under a UV light and whilst there are some minor areas that have been overpainted these are minimal. The painting is nibbled all of the way around the edges where it is laid onto the new canvas. This is hidden by the current slip. The stretcher outlines are visible on the font of the canvas. Judging by the slightly primitive nature of the painting it is probably 19th century. The painting is not on its original stretchers. We have no significant information regarding the provenance of this picture.

Los 585

18th century school, pair of oil paintings, portraits of Edward, 9th Duke of Norfolk, Lord of the Manor of Thornbury, together with his wife Mary, daughter of Edward Blount Esq. Canvasses respectively 73 cm x 65 cm. and 61 cm x 45 cm, both in moulded oak frames with gilt inner slips, both inscribed verso and with retailer stamped to canvasses "W. Eatwell, 49 Dorset Street" (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Neither painting has been relined. There are no holes in either canvas. The Duke of Norfolk is in generally very good order. There is a slight suggestion of minor overpainting just above the top right hand side of the wig. There is some craquelure evident to the paint surface but no significant lifting of the oil. Using a UV light we can see a small area of restoration to the left of the lip and a hint of restoration around the front of the nose. The gilt slip has some minor nibbles and losses to the gilding. The oak frame is in generally good order. Mary has had more extensive restoration. Again this is to the face. The left cheek and below the right nostril and a hint of overpainting to the forehead. There is some overpainting just above the breast area. This is all visible without a UV light but more pronounced with. The paint surface is in generally good order with only minor traces of craquelure. The gilt slip is in generally good order with minor blemishes. The oak frame is in good condition with no issues.

Los 588

E W Webb, oil painting, portrait of the racehorse "Rory Bean, by Canopus, aged 14 years, June 1832", the canvas 62 cm x 74 cm, signed in full and dated 1832 in figured maple bevelled frame with gilt inner slip (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The painting has come in for sale from Greystoke Castle, the home of the Howard Family since 1520. The painting as not been re-lined. There are two small patched to the rear of the canvas. There is poor overpainting corresponding to these patches. The areas in question when viewed from the front are approximately 6 cm up from the top hat and 2 cm below the angled forearm. The canvas is generally flat with no significant undulation. The painting has slightly moved in its frame exposing the canvas a little on the left-hand side. There is some crazing to the paint surface but this is not serious. We have looked at the canvas under a UV light and there is minor overpainting corresponding to the two patches. There is also a very small half cm square section approximately 3 cm above the narrow part of the horse's tail that has also had overpainting.

The front right hand leg of one chair is slightly angled in over. There is however as stated very little movement here. Both chairs are reasonably well upholstered, however being light in colour there are numerous small stains and marks to in particular the chair arms. The top of each back is also clicked in places. The dirtiest areas are around the fronts and tops of the arms. The fabric to the rear of one chair is plain cotton and is a little pulled in places.
