Rare Alsaphot Cyclope Camera with Boyer Saphir 105mm f4.5 Lens. With ERC. (condition 5F) A very unusual French camera. Two internal mirrors deflect the light from the lens until it falls on the film which is travelling across the front of the camera. For this reason this is probably the only camera which has the red window on the front. (BW)
A LARGE Victorian Wedding Tour Album, Including George Washington Wilson & James Valentine Prints. 118 pages 13" x 16". Cover dated August - September 1875 and featuring an impressive central (cast?) pair of monograms. The first page shows the (relatively) happy couple, then the Paddington church where they were married (exact names and dates unknown). The following 100+ pages contain over 100 topographical images mostly whole plate or smaller with a few larger. Areas covered start from the Lake District, through Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling etc) ending with several pages of Canterbury Cathedral and surrounds. Around 30 images are clearly marked G.W.W. for George Washington Wilson and at least seven marked JV for James Valentine. Several others echo their style, but captions may have been trimmed off. Many prints show moderate to heavy fading to the extremes and most pages suffer from light to very heavy foxing (most are moderate+) and the whole has a very faint musty smell but still a remarkable record with some good examples of the less well-known images from these two photographers. Viewing in person to be recommended. VERY heavy!
Glass Stereo View, Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) at Niagara Falls, September 17th 1860. Due to the water spray on the lenses during the exposure, several small 'spots' are visible on the image. A similar (mono?) image is at the Library and Archives, Canada, which shows part of the same grouping, but with distracting (and blurred) bystanders to one edge. Minor lifting of binding to top, exposure light, but an historically interesting image. (condition 5).
Early Reid I Camera with Taylor Hobson 2 inch f2 Lens. Body #P1745, making it a very early example of a Reid I camera (only 5 earlier Reid I serial numbers so far recorded - see our unique list at tinyurl.com/yalfkkv6). Several minor bright marks to base plate, otherwise condition 5F). With Taylor Hobson 2 inch f2 Anastigmat lens #328660 with matching 3-figure number (660) to barrel. (minor marks commensurate with light/normal use, condition 5F). With later version lens cap . (JVC).
A Unique, Prototype Reid Camera, Serial Number X4. The star lot of the John Vincent Collection! At first glance this appears to be a Reid IIIa but there are no strap lugs on the body and there is a little more empty space on the top plate. This is due to the fact the body moulding is slightly longer than any other Reid. The reason for this becomes obvious when the base is removed and the extreme edges inspected as this camera has been redesigned to incorporate an opening back for ease of film loading. JV's notes indicate that the factory were aware of the film loading short-comings of Leica and similar cameras and were convinced this feature once introduced would boost their sales. Sadly so much time and effort was spent on making the newly designed moulding light-tight that the project was shelved. Assuming this camera dates towards the end of the company's life, the more practical SLR was gaining popularity and Reid's production costs were already starting to spiral. John's research notes show that in the late 1980s a rangefinder cover (only) with the number X3 was known to be in the possession of a former employee, but several of his sources independently state that only one finished camera was ever produced, making this an important item in British photographic history. In full working order it comes with an uncommon (early?) bright chrome barrel version Taylor Hobson 2 inch f2 Anastigmat lens #328262, lacking the 3-figure number to barrel. (very slight internal marks condition 4/5F) with lens cap. Also included is a Reid ERC, the inside edges of which have had the padding removed so the longer body comfortably fits. PLEASE NOTE, due to its one-off design, standard Reid top and bottom plate are not interchangeable with those from standard models. For a short video on the opening back in action, please visit https://tinyurl.com/wkqmo4m (JVC).
