[COGNAC]: An important autograph manuscript by Henri Guilbault entitled Memoire sur un nouvel appareil de distillation continue au moyen de la vapeur ('Memoir on a new apparatus for continuous distillation by means of steam'), eighty-eight pages, folio, n.p., n.d. (early 1850s), in French. The neatly penned manuscript, containing various corrections and additions, as well as numerous variations (in particular significant unpublished sections) to the final published version, concerns the distillation of eaux-de-vie, and particularly cognac, from Saintonge, the region of France famous for its grapes. If it is true that trade and consumption in general generally regret the abandonment that was made for some time of the old distillation apparatus, because of the quality of the products it gave, it was necessary to strain in a new device, to produce the same effect as the old one, on the condition however that it could always be used in all countries with distillation, whatever the nature and origin of the alcoholic products'…..[published] 'The Saintonge eaux-de-vie, so justly renamed, to which the name of Cognac brandy has been wrongly given, are so superior in quality, because of their special taste and aroma, that no one does not think of converting the white wines of the country into what are called three-sixes or alcohols of a very high degree……..The goal I must have set myself, for the moment at least, could not have been to make a device to produce three-sixes, but rather to find the means of making good spirits, much quicker and cheaper, as regards the manufacture, than any system employed in this country and everywhere else. It is not, however, that with my apparatus, one cannot very easily make three-sixes, if one wishes, since by rectifying a product several times, one must succeed in separating the aqueous parts from the alcoholic parts at the means of distillation, continuing to use the system which is the fundamental basis of my system'). The manuscript is bound together with Guilbault's own final printed copy of his work published by La Librairie Bourbaud, Saintes, in 1854, and includes patent diagrams of the distillation apparatus as well as numerous pencil annotations in his hand to the margins. Also included within the volume is the autograph manuscript of Guilbault's memoir entitled De l'education, des Moeurs, des Institutions politiques chez les anciens & de leurs resultats (Translation: 'On Education, Customs, Political Institutions among the Ancients & their results'), comprising over one hundred folio pages, with extensive corrections, and several other printed works authored by Guilbault. All are contained within their original paper wrappers and the ensemble neatly bound within a folio volume with a gilt stamped title to the spine and bearing the ex-libris of Martineau of Saintonge. Some light age wear, generally VGIt would appear that the process for distilling Saintonge's cognac eaux-de-vie, developed by Guilbault, the main purpose of which was to avoid direct contact between the fire and the boiler, contact which produces irregularities of taste in the alcohol, was not adopted as in 1870 coal was still used for the direct heating of boilers in the region of Saintonge.

‘I would advise against the ‘Magic Flute’ under these circumstances at all costs’ 680 STRAUSS RICHARD: (1864-1949) German composer and conductor. A good A.L.S., Richard Strauss, two pages, 8vo, Weimar, 22nd November 1891, to Hans Bronsart von Schellendorff, in German. Strauss writes to offer his views on some upcoming performances, 'Walter just informed me of Frau Pichon's cancellation. If I may be permitted to offer a respectful suggestion, I think it would be best if a guest could be found from Leipzig for the countess in the 'Poacher', so as to keep the 'Poacher' with Frl. Schoder on Tuesday at all costs, as I really think it would be very good if the 'Poacher' is staged with Frl. Schoder, in many respects! On the other hand, I myself wouldn't like to risk doing the 'Magic Flute' with Frl. Schoder with one rehearsal a day for any price; on Monday I have a concert, the 3 ladies haven't rehearsed here; also, I think it isn't in Frl. Schoder's own interest to bring her out now as Pamina, in which role Frau Stavenhagen and Frl. De Klina far outshine her. But I think I can promise a great success for Frl. Schoder's Baroness in the 'Poacher', as she has an exceptional talent for the light genre and for the time being even more gifts as a soubrette, whereas the lyrical is still her weak side. Thus, if, as I say the 'Poacher' can be kept for Tuesday, I think this would be most valuable and can prophesy a good performance. I would advise against the 'Magic Flute' under these circumstances at all costs. Perhaps Lucia [di Lammermoor] instead! Pardon this hasty scribbling, but Walter is waiting for it.' Doyle provides an insight into his new novel –‘I think I have done it in such a way that it is picturesque and not offensive, though I have two big fights in the book’DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A very fine A.L.S., A Conan Doyle, four pages, 8vo, Maloja Hotel, Maloja [Switzerland], 1st August 1895, to [James] Payn. Doyle's unusually lengthy letter begins in a social vein, 'How I wish I could waft you up here, for it is a very charming place, but decidedly inaccessible to any man who is not very robust….I see from the Illustrated that your wit and cheeriness never fail you, but I know that in your case that is no proof of health or strength', before continuing on the subject of his present literary endeavours, 'I have been very busy on the…..prize fighter book of which, I think, I said something to you. I think it will work out fairly well, but I dare not be too sanguine. I remember that you were disposed to think that I was dealing with an unsavoury subject in the prize ring……But I hope that it may justify itself. I think I have done it in such a way that it is picturesque and not offensive, though I have two big fights in the book. It has never yet been done, as far as I know, and yet the Ring is the one typical Anglo Saxon sport which has never existed outside English speaking countries, and which has now, I believe, a very deep hold of the people - in spite of the unspeakable state to which it has been reduced. In the old days it stood for chivalry, gallantry & fair play, and I am sure I would rather fight in the lists with lance and sword than stand up to a good man for a hundred rounds, as far as the bravery & endurance which is needed goes. I hope when it comes your way that you may think I have made it interesting.' The author returns to his social and sporting activities, 'Our chief amusement here is to play golf, but as the grass is very thick & long the game gives you a lot of fresh air with very little exertion, for at your first drive you lose your ball, and then you spend your day, with intervals for meals, in walking round in circles and looking for it. [John] Hare is here and I believe [Squire] Bancroft & [Arthur Wing] Pinero are expected, so we feel that we are quite a dramatic centre', and also comments on his holiday reading, 'Of course you have read Morrison's “Mean Streets”. It seemed to me to be very good indeed. I have just finished “The Honour of Savelli” but did not care for that so much….Books are the great difficulty out here, for the hotel library has only got as far as Bulwer Lytton'. In concluding Doyle refers to the health of his wife ('very well & bright') and their plans to have their own house built by the end of the next summer, 'I bought the land, but the Tyndalls now claim that there is a right of way through it. I recall a painful story I read somewhere of a man who had actually finished his house when such a claim was made & proved. As a result he had the whole parish continually passing in at his back door and out at the front one. Warned by it I shall settle this matter before I build - and I have no doubt we shall arrange it all right'. LARREY DOMINIQUE JEAN: (1766-1842) French Surgeon of Napoleon´s Grande Armée. Larrey was the Emperor´s favourite surgeon, an innovator in the battlefield medicine and widely considered one of the first modern military surgeons. A very interesting and lengthy L.S., `D.J. Larrey´, four pages, folio, Paris, 15th June 1841, to the Director of the Administration Materials, in French. The present letter was written only a month before Larrey passed away. Larrey, in his capacity as Surgeon Inspector, responds on behalf of the Health Council to a previous letter dated three days earlier, which was relating to mortality in the barracks of Béfort. Larrey reports on the investigation he has commissioned, stating in part `…dans aucune des casernes de Béfort les proportions entre la contenance des chambres et le nombre d´hommes qui les habitant n´ont été maintenues dans les limites réglementaires et que dans plusieurs meme le volume d´air respirable était pour chaque homme bien au-dessous de celui qui es ten general reconnu necessaire…´ (Translation: “…in none of the Béfort barracks were the proportions between the capacity of the rooms and the number of men living in them kept within the regulatory limits, and in several of them even the volume of breathable air for each man was well below that which is generally recognized as necessary...”) Larrey further expresses his conclusions on the causes of the high proportion of mortality, saying `C´est à cette facheuse circonstance, il n´est guère permis d´en douter, qu´on doit imputer le nombre et la gravité des maladies qui se sont manifestées à deux époques peu éloignées l´une de l´autre parmi les troupes stationnées dans cette place, quelle que fut d´ailleurs la caserne qu´elles occupassent…´ (Translation: “It is to this unfortunate circumstance, there is no reason to doubt it, that we must attribute the number and the gravity of the illnesses which appeared at two periods not far from each other among the troops. stationed in this place, regardless of the barracks they occupied…”) To make the necessary changes in the vaulted barracks to sufficiently facilitate the renewal of air and the entry of light…. It would not be appropriate to cover the walls internally with woodwork placed one inch apart… because this covering would become a receptacle for parasitic insects, would be altered by humidity and expose to fires…”) A letter of very good content. DREYFUS ALFRED: (1859-1935) French artillery officer of Jewish ancestry whose trial and conviction in 1894 on charges of treason became one of the most polarising political dramas in modern French history. Known as the Dreyfus Affair, it ultimately ended with Dreyfus's complete exoneration. An interesting A.L.S., A Dreyfus, one page, 8vo, n.p. 9th February 1918, to a Colonel commanding the 168th Regiment of Infantry, on Dreyfus's printed stationery as Le Chef d'Escadron, 20 Corps d'Armee, in French. I have the honour to inform you that it fell today…..from a balloon, copies in German of Mr. Wilson's last message to the American Congress together with copies of the attached appeal from Russia to German soldiers'). With a few official stamps and ink annotations, only very slightly affecting the text. Together with the piece of Russian propaganda referred to by Dreyfus, being a small printed oblong 12mo card issued in the names of Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky, dated at Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) on 5th December 1917, with German text to the recto and verso, stating, in part, 'Russia's appeal to the German soldiers. The provisional government has been overthrown, power is now in the hands of the Russian people, and the new government regards immediate peace as its foremost task. We have taken all measures to ensure that the text of our peace offer is communicated to all belligerent powers. We now call on you soldiers to support us in the struggle for peace and socialism, for only socialism will bring lasting peace to the working class…..Soldiers, our brothers! The shining example given to you by your leader Liebknecht, the struggle that you are waging in the assemblies and in the press, and finally the revolutionary events of the German fleet give us the assurance that your battalions of workers are ready to fight for peace. Brothers, if you support us then the work of peace will be assured…..If you help us in the fight for socialism, then your organisational spirit and your experience will help socialism win everywhere. Our soldiers have laid down their arms, now it's up to you to follow the flag of peace. Long live peace! Long live the social and international revolution!'
