HUMBOLDT ALEXANDER VON: (1769-1859) German Natural Scientist, Geographer & Explorer. A very fine, rare manuscript line chart signed, A v Humboldt, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p. (Spain), 1799, in French. In his typically small, neat hand Humboldt has recorded a profile of Peninsular Spain from the southeast to the northwest, from the coast of Valencia to that of Gelice, recording several major towns and cities including Medina del Campo, El Escorial, Madrid and Aranjuez and their height above sea level, also recording some of the latitudes and noting that the scale of distance is 1:100. Signed and annotated by Humboldt beneath the chart, also noting a comparison with the height above sea level of several other European cities and landmarks including Munich, Brocken, Schneekoppe (Snezka) and Mount Vesuvius. Rare in this form. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and two very small areas of paper loss to two corners, not affecting the chart, text or signature. About VG In the first half of 1799, at the time of preparing the present chart, Humboldt (accompanied by the botanist and physician Aime Bonpland) found himself in Madrid where he sought authorisation to travel to Spain's realms in the Americas. Receiving a positive response to his proposal, Humboldt was presented to King Charles IV and subsequently granted access to crown officials and written documentation on Spain's empire. Armed with authorisation from the King, Humboldt and Bonpland set sail on 5th June 1799 on their Spanish American expedition which would last until 1804. Humboldt's historic expedition is now regarded as having laid the foundation of the sciences of physical geography, plant geography and meteorology. On a personal level, the geographer's decades' long endeavour to publish the results of the expedition resulted not only in multiple volumes, but also drew him to the attention of the reading public with popular densely illustrated, condensed versions of his work in multiple languages. Importantly it also secured Humboldt's international reputation in scientific circles.

French Ambassador since 1760 to Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great, later Sweden and Austria. He occupied main political positions such as Prime Minister of France 1784-88 & 1789, The Baron of Breteuil was the last chief Minister of the Bourbon Monarchy appointed by King Louis XVI only four days before the storming of the Bastille. It was Marie Antoinette's decision that Breteuil be appointed Prime Minister in exile. Louis XVI supported her in this move, but it was Marie Antoinette who took the initiative and formalised Breteuil's appointment. In effect, he was the Royal Family's chief diplomat abroad. In November 1790, he received from Louis XVI exclusive powers to negotiate with the European courts. It was also Breteuil who organised the Royal family's escape from Paris in 1791, garnering support from King Gustav III of Sweden. The attempt almost succeeded, but was foiled at the last minute by Jean-Baptiste Drouet, the Republican son of a local postmaster. It was also Breteuil who negotiated with the European monarchies to persuade them to fight the French Revolution.

DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. To the upper right corner of the page Dali has added an original pen and ink drawing in his hand, the intricate image depicting a horse rider, with spear in hand, galloping towards a small hill, above which floats a mysterious object, and with a shooting star in the skies. Again signed (‘Salvador Dali’) by Dali in a miniscule hand immediately beneath the drawing. The printed title of the novel has also been inked over in Dali’s hand. Irregularly trimmed to the left edge and with some light overall creasing and damp staining, GHenry de La Falaise (1898-1972) Marquis de La Coudraye. Hidden Faces (1944) was Dali’s only novel and describes the intrigues of a group of eccentric aristocrats whose extravagant lifestyle symbolises the decadence of the 1930s. Variously set in Paris, rural France, Casablanca and Palm Springs, the characters include the Comte de Grandsailles and Solange de Cleda (who pursue an ultimately doomed love affair) as well as aging widow Barbara Rogers, her bisexual daughter Veronica, Veronica’s sometime lover Betka, and a disfigured United States fighter pilot, Baba.
SHELLEY PERCY BYSSHE: (1792-1822) British writer, one of the major English Romantic poets. An exceptional A.L.S., with his initials P. B. S., three pages, 4to, Pisa, 20th July 1820, to his cousin Thomas Medwin (´My dear Medwin´). Shelley writes an interesting letter, including references to two of his masterpieces, stating that he has received Medwin´s letter from the mountains, and remarking ´How much I envy you, or rather, how much I sympathise in the delights of your wandering. I have a passion for such expeditions, although, partly the capriciousness of my health & partly the want of the incitement of a companion, keep me at home. I see the mountains, the sky & the trees from my windows & recollect, as an old man does the mistresses of his youth, the raptures of a more familiar intercourse; but without his regrets, for their forms are yet living in my mind´, adding that he hopes his cousin will not pass by Tuscany without paying a visit (´Mrs. Shelley unites with me in assuring......that whatever else may be found deficient, a sincere welcome is at least in waiting for you´). Shelley proceeds to write at length regarding two of his verse dramas, ´I am delighted with your approbation of my ‘Cenci’, & am encouraged to wish to present you with my ‘Prometheus Unbound’, a drama also, but a composition of a totally different character. I do not know if it be wise to affect variety in compositions or whether the attempt to excel in many ways does not deter from excellence in one particular kind. ‘Prometheus Unbound’ is in the merest spirit of ideal poetry & not, as the name would indicate, a mere imitation of the Greek drama, or indeed, if I have been successful, is it an imitation of anything. But you will judge - I hear it is just printed & I probably shall receive copies from England before I see you. Your objection to the ‘Cenci’ as to the introduction of the name of God is good, in as much as the play is addressed to a Protestant people; but we Catholics speak eternally & familiarly of the 1st person of the Trinity; and amongst us religion is more interwoven with, and is less extraneous to, the system of ordinary life. As to Cenci´s curse, I know not whether I can defend it or no. I wish I may be able, since, as it often happens respecting the worst point of an author´s work, it is a particular favourite with me. I prided myself as since your approbation I hope that I had just cause to do upon the two concluding lines of the play. I confess I cannot approve of the squeamishness which excludes the exhibition of such subjects from the scene´ (at this point of the letter two-and-a-half lines of text have been struck through, seemingly by Shelley himself). The poet asks ´What think you of my boldness?´ and reflects on a future project, a drama which would remain unfinished at his death, ´I mean to write a play, in the spirit of human nature, without prejudice or passion, entitled ‘Charles the 1st’. So vanity intoxicates people; but let those few who praise my verses & in whose approbation I take so much delight, answer for this sin´ further making reference to contemporary events involving the British monarchy, ´I wonder what in the world the Queen has done. I should not wonder, after the whispers I have heard, to find that the Green Bag contained evidence that she had imitated Pasiphae, & that the Committee should recommend to Parliament a bill to exclude all minotaurs from the succession. What silly stuff is this to employ a great nation about. I wish the King & the Queen, like Punch & his wife, would fight out their disputes in person´, before closing his letter with the lines ´This warm weather agrees excellently with me; I only wish it would last all the year. many things both to say & to hear, be referred until we meet´. With integral address panel in Shelley´s hand (a couple of thin, neat strips of the remains of the guard to the edges and centre). Autograph letters of Shelley are extremely rare as a result of his tragic death at the young age of 29, and the present example is particularly rich in its literary content. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGThomas Medwin (1788-1869) English writer, poet and translator, remembered for his biography of Shelley and for published recollections of his friend, Lord Byron. The Cenci. A Tragedy, in Five Acts (1820) was written by Shelley in the summer of 1819, and inspired by the House of Cenci, a real Roman family. The play was not considered stageable in its day owing to the themes of incest and parricide, as well as the negative depiction of the Roman Catholic Church (all subjects Shelley reflects on in the present letter), and was not performed in public in England until over a century later, in 1922.Prometheus Unbound (1820) is a four-act lyrical drama which is concerned with the torments of the Greek mythological figure Prometheus, who defies the gods and gives fire to humanity, for which he is subjected to eternal punishment and suffering at the hands of Zeus. The play is a closet drama, not intended for stage production. In the tradition of Romantic poetry, Shelley wrote for the imagination, intending his play's stage to reside in the imaginations of his readers. Filled with suspense, mystery, and other dramatic effects, W. B. Yeats famously described the work as being ´among the sacred books of the world´.The deleted passage of the present letter, according to the published version in Volume IV of The Prose Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, originally read ´a squeamishness the produce, as I firmly believe, of a lower tone of the public mind, and foreign to the majestic and confident wisdom of the golden age of our country´.One of the final parts of Shelley´s letter makes reference to the events of 1820 whereby King George IV, who had recently succeeded to the throne, attempted to divorce his long-estranged wife. Caroline of Brunswick. In order to secure his divorce, the King had a special bill moved in the House of Lords and the evidence of the Queen´s adultery was presented to parliament in two green bags. Ultimately the measure was withdrawn by the government and Caroline remained married to the King until her death a year later.

Troubridge, and I understood from him that the thing would be done. It proves what I every day feel that I have no interest, but I will try the thing again this very day´, further adding ´Believe me I would do it with great pleasure if in my power. Whilst Einstein clearly created many such pages of scientific formulae during his career, they remain highly sought after by collectors, and signed examples are of exceptional rarity. Furthermore, the present example is greatly enhanced by both Einstein's handwritten observation (reflecting on the possibility of what he wished to have achieved with his calculations) and the fine accompanying letter of provenance from Elsa Einstein. Lawrence commences his letter stating ´I am most distressed to learn that your copies of Lady Chatterley´s Lover have not turned up´, explaining that they were sent by registered post a longtime ago (´and surely the Mexican govt. would not confiscate them, as the U.S.A. customs do!) and adding that Conway must obtain others, if any remain, ´Orioli has very few, I know - they may all be ordered. But one at least I´ll rescue for you. But we must find out what became of the others. The book is selling at $50 in U.S.A. - and anything over £5 here in Europe - so you see it is quite a loss´. Lawrence continues his letter by thanking Conway for their Christmas card (´how pretty it is!´) and a book, and also writes of future travel plans and his health, ´We have given up the Villa Miranda, and are at a bit of a loose end, wondering where to go & where to live next. I think in about a fortnight we shall go to Spain, and try that. But we might go to New Mexico for the summer, so if ever you are passing, make sure first if we are there and do stop & see us if we are- I was ill last year but am much better now & getting to be myself again´. Lawrence returns to the subject of his book, ´Some people were much scandalised by Lady C, but many took it in the right spirit, and remain staunch to me. I do hope you´ll get your copies, & will read it & not be shocked. Mrs. Conway too. We have lived too long to be shocked by words any more´. Lawrence concludes by asking how Conway and his wife are, remarking ´I think of you often, and quake sometimes for you, seeing the Mexican news. But you´ll go on for ever, I feel, running those trams & deciphering Spanis MS´. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Lawrence.
