It consists of leaves and branches with fruit in cameo glass in ochre, green and acid-etched brown.Signed on the side.Provenance: Private collection Spain, formed between 1970 and 2010.Good preservation. Wear and tear due to use and the passage of time.Measurements: 30 x 7,5 x 7 cm.Émile Gallé began his career working for his father, who owned a glass and ceramics factory, making designs with floral and heraldic motifs. Very interested in botany, he studied it in depth during his youth, alternating with drawing classes. Between 1862 and 1864, at his father's request, he travelled around Italy, England and Germany, taking an interest in the applied arts but also in subjects that he would later reflect in his works, such as music, philosophy and nature. On his return he settled in Meisenthal, where his family's glass furnaces were located, in order to fully learn the craft of glassmaking. He also travelled to London and Paris to see the collections of their museums. In 1874 he took over his father's factory and soon achieved great international success, winning prizes at international exhibitions and selling his works to important collections and museums. In 1878 he presented his first creations at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, many of which were inspired by the Japanese artists Hokusai (1760-1849) and Hokkei (1780-1856). In this important exhibition, Gallé discovered three techniques that were to prove decisive for his production: the remarques of the Pantin Glassworks, the cameo engraved glass of the English (inspired by the Portland Glass in the British Museum) and the superimposition of layers of different coloured glass presented by Eugène Rousseau. Émile Gallé was undoubtedly a man fully representative of his time. He was a poet, an artist par excellence, capable of translating his emotions and desires into matter, someone who found in the alchemy of glass, in its light, in its nuances, a form of language. Because of this talent and his mastery, his glassworks became the most famous in France around 1900. He was also the founder and president of the Nancy School, whose principles he always followed. He introduced into his pieces all kinds of experimental and innovative techniques, as well as some traditional ones. One of these was the introduction of metal sheets between the different layers of glass, thus enhancing the magical effect of his most exclusive pieces. As far as possible, Gallé imposed the characteristics of a style that evolved into free and refined expressions, applying an enormous variety of themes and decorative techniques on opaque and coloured glass, which continue to amaze to this day. Today, pieces by Émile Gallé can be seen in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Brohan Museum in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among many others.
Mark Kaiser Aurora Borealis in Bordeyri, Iceland, 2022 Oil on Paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Mark Kaiser was born in Worcestershire and has been painting and drawing since the age of three. In the summer after graduation he was contacted by EMI Records who were particularly interested in an illustration he'd created out of burnt Chinese newspapers and this was subsequently seen by the then up-and-coming band Radiohead who wanted to entitle their EP 'Chinese Burn'. The band loved it and exhibited the finished painting in their house. Among his artistic inspirations are Vincent Van Gogh, Gustav Klimt, Frida Kahlo, Edward Hopper, Gustave Baumann, Simon Palmer and Paul Gauguin. Mark lives in Warwickshire and paints from a busy studio filled with travel books. He exhibited his work at Artistic License Gallery in Primrose Hill, London for many years and was represented by the gallery at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea many times. The exhibitions were sell-outs and resulted in many private commissions. His work has inspired many musicians, actors, architects and poets. "I like to entertain people with my work, to educate, and to recall memories of favourite destinations that people have been to. My main focus is on architecture, travel and colour. There is a wealth of subject matter on offer and there is no end to that reference material - all one has to be is selective in the choice on offer. There is a story to each piece, in essence I am a storyteller, only working in colour and form instead of the written word. It's dark out beyond the green aurora, it's bitterly cold but the winter chill is warmed by the inviting light emanating from the house. The scene is one of hope, that no matter what darkness is around us there is always light piercing the shadows. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. These past years, landscape and spaces have come to the fore in my work, propelled by thoughts around an architecture of the gaze. Of the human looking upon both landscape and the city, of looking inward, of defining through painting a physical and emotional space to worship the tangible and intangible. Visually translating an experience of illness, disability or disordered eating through metaphor, I aim to show an immediate subject of trauma being pulled into a different space, an abstract fantastical space devoid of pain, situating illness within delicate, dreamlike and "pretty" scenes. A focus on beauty in both the figurative subject painted, the laboured, smoothed, thin layers of acrylic paint, the pink aura, realism next to gestural washes of light, and the renaissance-like veiled bodies. Contrasting this with reoccurring shorthand symbols for sickness - the paintings end up somewhere between ethereal and nightmarish. Anna Calleja Homebound, 2022 Oil on Paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Anna Calleja (b.1997) is a Maltese multidisciplinary artist primarily working in paint, print and sculpture. Calleja has exhibited across the UK and abroad, at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, at Tate St. Ives, Porthmeor Studios, and at the Mall Galleries in London amongst others. Calleja was the recipient of a Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition for her 2020 painting 'Alone in Quarantine'. Calleja was recently a finalist for the Premju ghal-arti award for Best Young Artist of the Year, an award by the Malta Arts Council that celebrates the main achievements in the Maltese cultural scene. Her work retires to the comfort and melancholy of home, using the process of painting to create quiet moments of introspection. She looks back on her own notions of comfort to confront an anxious present and grapple with an uncertain future. Calleja's interest lies in dualities; the tension and dissonance between comfort and melancholy, isolation and connection, love and pain. Education First class honours in BA (hons) Fine Art from Falmouth University Select Exhibitions/Awards Awards: Finalist Premju Ghal-Arti Best Young Artist, 2022 (pending results) Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award, ROI Annual Exhibition 2020 Best Emerging Young Artist, ARTZ ID, 2020 C-A-S-T Residency, Helston 2019 Midas Award at the Newlyn Art Gallery and the Exchange 2019 Malta Arts Scholarship, 2017-2020 Exhibitions: 2022 Domestic Bliss, Beaux Arts Bath, Bath Works on Paper 4, Blue Shop Cottage, London Sea Sunset Moon, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta, Malta 2021 Anna Calleja: On Hold, New Craftsman Gallery, St. Ives RP Annual Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London Homebound solo exhibition, Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta, Malta Launch Exhibition, Morgans, Falmouth ROI Annual Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London 2020 Extraordinary Postcards for Extraordinary Times, Newlyn Art Gallery Postcard Exhibition, Highgate Art Gallery, London 2019 Environments, Tate St. Ives Tate Collective Producer at Otobong Nkanga: Ustudio, Tate St. Ives Anna Calleja and Will Calver, Porthmeor Studios, St. Ives Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork These four works (one oil painting and three ink drawings) sit in between comfort and melancholy suspended in quietude. I look back on my own notions of comfort to confront an anxious present and grapple with an uncertain future. Two of the ink drawings depict my cat, sitting still in silent ambivalence or bathed in morning light. While the world grows ever more turbulent, divisive and moves steadily towards climate crises, the cat passively sleeps on, as do we. 'Homebound' portrays a figure suspended in time, between past and present, life and death and comfort and melancholy while 'Scissors' plays on the Ancient Greek myth of Atropos, one of the three fates, who holds the shears that cut the thread of life. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardizes the charitable work we do.
