An excellent original pen and ink drawing signed by the German-Swiss artist Robert Kastor, the well-executed image, on a folio sheet of artist's paper, depicts Nitti in a head and shoulders pose. Signed by Nitti at the base and with a lengthy quotation in his hand, in Italian, 'Europe will not regain lost wealth and what's more the security of life as long as true peace is restored, after the false peace of the treaties. [GRANT ULYSSES S.]: (1822-1885) American President 1869-77, previously Commanding General of the United States Army 1864-69. Under Grant the Union Army defeated the Confederate military in the American Civil War 1861-65. PLUMB EDWARD LEE (1827-1912) American Diplomat & Railroad promoter, associated with Mexico. A.L.S., E L Plumb, three pages, 8vo, n.p., 23rd June n.y. (annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand 1872), to Major General P. H. Sheridan ('General'). Plumb commences 'I must express to you the intense satisfaction with which I have read your splendid telegram to Genl. Grant published today. “Macadamized road for perjury”!!' and continues 'You have coined a phrase which will ring all over the country a convincing argument. And you have dared to say what no one else has so said before, yet what is in everyone's mind', further praising another condemnation of the President by Sheridan and contemplating if there may be more to follow. A letter of interesting content and association. Sheridan served as a Union General during the American Civil War.
DINUZULU: (1868-1913) King of the Zulu Kingdom 1884-1913. Son of Cetshwayo. An extremely rare A.L.S., Dinuzulu, two pages, 8vo, Osuthu, 17th July 1906, to J. F. Clark R.M., in Zulu. The boldly penned letter is untranslated and features a lengthy postscript, making a reference to 2nd July 1906, and again signed by Dinuzulu with his initials. Together with a second, brief A.L.S., Dinuzulu, one page, 8vo, Osuthu, 18th July 1906, to C. J. Walls, in English. Dinuzulu states, in full, 'Please supply bearer 3 bottles whisky E.S.C.' Some light age wear, minor foxing, folds and creasing, G to about VG, 2 The present letters were written during the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906, after which Dinuzulu was accused of having given the orders to Bambatha kaMancinza to start the rebellion. The Zulu King was subsequently put on trial for treason and, although protesting his innocence, was found guilty and sentenced to four years imprisonment in March 1908.Provenance: The present letters were previously part of the Ray Rawlins collection of autograph letters and historical documents. The Illustrated London News of Saturday, 7th December 1907 described the Zulu chief Dinuzulu as 'a hopeless drunkard'.

DIETRICH MARLENE: (1901-1992) German-American Actress and Singer. An interesting A.L.S., with her initial M, two pages, 4to, n.p. (Paris), 8th November 1984, to Gene Lovelle. Dietrich writes, in full, 'Many thanks for your letter. Now, that my friend is President again I can breathe easier. Nothing new here, except that I miss laughing with you! No laughter here!!! Everybody nervous or angry! Not easy! I am glad you lead a quiet life, not in the turmoil of the life I lead here. France is in a bad way and therefore all people who I am in contact with are NEUVUS IN THE SEUVUCE!!! I just hope my daughter can come soon. I need her. All love, M.'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Dietrich. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, otherwise VG Dietrich's correspondent was Gene Lovelle, her dresser during the 1960s and 1970s and wife of the star's guitarist, Chic Lovelle. Dietrich refers to Ronald Reagan who had been re-elected as President of the United States of America on 6th November 1984, just two days before the present letter was written.
DENT VERNON: (1895-1963) American Film Comedian associated with The Three Stooges. An extremely rare vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Dent standing outdoors in a full length pose, in costume, precariously holding a large dog in his arms in a scene from one of his films. Signed in blue ink to a light area at the base of the image and dated 9th March 1922 in his hand. Signed photographs of Dent are extremely rare, not least as a result of his blindness which led to his retirement in the mid-1950s. Berlioz, one page, 4to, Paris, 22nd January 1849, to a gentleman, on the printed stationery of the Comite de l'Association du Artistes in French. The letter states, in full, 'Wishing to come to the assistance of honourable unfortunate people, the three associations of artists, painters, sculptors, engravers, architects and illustrators, musicians and men of letters, each of them hosting a yearly ball in aid of their relief fund, met today to arrange a gala that will take place on the 3rd February in the Jardin d'Hiver; would you please accept the role of ball commissioner, and join your efforts with ours to make the event more successful'.
