A Victorian mahogany cheval mirror, mid 19th century, the tall rectangular bevelled plate in a frame with fretwork surmount and set on two twist column supports and set on a sledge base, 190cm high, 72cm wide Condition report The cheval glass is in generally good condition, the very top of the finial has been broken and repaired. The plateau base has a split in the surface veneer on the top. It’s sound and will support the mirror, and does not really detract. There is a small missing section of veneer to the back of the base 2cm or so. Plate looks fine, slight discolouration of the ‘silvering’ to its back, but the glass will be fine with a clean. It has been in a fairly disorganised house for some years and needs a good clean. Base might be improved with replacing small veneer losses and light restoration.

J.F. Michiels "Album von Köln"Die ersten Architektur-Photographien Deutschlands wurden ab 1853 von J.F. Michiels (1823-1887) gemacht und gelten bei Photohistorikern als außerordentlich bedeutende Meisterwerke der Photogeschichte. Der Ruhm von J.F. Michiels gründet sich auf seine frühen Photographien von Kölner Baudenkmälern. Kein Photograph hat ein eindrucksvolleres Portrait des im Bau befindlichen Doms geliefert als Michiels mit seiner ersten Aufnahme vom 29. Juni 1853. Nur acht dieser seltenen Original-Photographien sind in einzelnen Sammlungen erhalten geblieben. Konservatorische Gründe gestatten es jedoch nicht, diese frühen Photographien auszustellen, da fortwährender Tageslichteinfluß die Bilder zerstören würde. Um sie dennoch einem breiteren Kreis von Interessenten zugänglich zu machen, wurden zum 750-jährigen Dom-Jubiläum (1983) originalgetreue Reproduktionen (Format 29,5 x 38,5 cm) in einem patentierten Schweizer Spezialverfahren hergestellt. Das Großformat der Originale (50 x 40 cm) macht deutlich, welche charaktervollen Beispiele mittelalterlicher Architektur die Stadt Köln beherbergt. Das Gesamtwerk wurde künstlerisch hervorragend gestaltet und in einem neuen aufwendigen rasterlosen Farbdruckverfahren in der Schweiz produziert. Für Wissenschaftler, Sammler und Kenner photo- und kunstgeschichtlicher Literatur ist es ein begehrtes Sammlerobjekt und ein unersetzlicher Schatz in ihrer Bibliothek!
