Letter from Winston Churchill re: The Boer War[Churchill (W.S.)] Letter (with envelope) addressed to "Captain M.J.C. Dennis, K Section 'Pompous', 2nd Cav. Bde, South African Field Army", dated 4 March 1901, signed "Winston S. Churchill" and written on House of Commons notepaper.* Churchill wrote two books on his experiences in the early stages of the Boer War, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March, both published in 1900. Captain Dennis took exception to Churchill's assertion that the Boers had made more effective use of their Maxim guns than the British gunners. This is Churchill's carefully-worded reply, in which he does not "recede from [his] opinion", remarking: "You would not say that the Boer artillery was 'notoriously ineffective' had you been present at the action on Spionkop". However, he does agree to delete from further editions "the inaccurate statement that General Broadwood addressed any remarks to you on the subject of the Heilbron affair".An important and interesting letter that casts light on the reactions of serving British officers to Churchill's books on the Boer War, which was still far from over at the time.
