EARLY 20TH CENTURY KOEHLER MINERS SAFETY LAMP, with pierced hood and double gauze, 26cm excl hook, and another similar (2)Provenance: private collection South Wales Valleys.Notes: The 1918 Koehler lamp was the first miner's lamp to be approved by the US Bureau of Mines. It was supposed to generate more light than other lamps, and produce clearer results when testing the mine air.Comments: worn and well used, some bars loose, used condition, working order not guaranteed, inspection advised.
Interesting group of family related medals includes WWI trio to 18518 Pte J R Bates Duke of Cornwall light infantry (D. of Corn. L.I., together with 3 x WWI miniatures plus the WWII defence medal, indicating that Bates was awarded this medal, but the large medal is however missing. Two dog tags for J Bates with a different roll number 651925 are also included. In addition, 3 x WWII medals addressed to a relative, R F Bates, and including the original entitlement certificate for 3 medals.

Quinan (1878-1948), American-born chemical engineer who contributed to the British war effort in World War I with the design and building of several explosives factories, including the enormous factory at Gretna, which covered 9000 acres. Quinan was made a Companion of Honour, declining the knighthood offered on the basis of his US citizenship, and given the Croix de Guerre. David Lloyd George publicly thanked him in the House of Commons, saying "It would be hard to point to anyone who did more to win the war than Kenneth Bingham Quinan".

Churchill (Sir Winston).- "Sonning-Prisen" [The Sonning Prize], bifolium, portrait frontispiece, ink signature, light spotting, original crushed morocco, lightly sunned, 1950; with 2 memorandums on 'The Churchill Endowment Fund" loosely inserted, folio (3)⁂ Presumably a presentation certificate for the inaugural Sonning Prize. This was named after the Danish editor and author Carl Johan Sonning (1879-1937), who established the prize in his will to be awarded to those "found to have done commendable work for the benefit of European culture". The first award was given to Sir Winston Churchill for furthering Anglo-Danish scientific interests.
French prisons.- Diard (H.) Études sur le système pénitentiaire et sur son application au régime des prisons de France, first edition, half-title, mostly light foxing, heavier to last few ff., later vellum-backed marbled boards, small stain to spine on author's name, 8vo, Tours, Ladevèze, 1875.⁂ Rare in commerce. Proposes reforms for the French prison system, based on the study of the methods of America and other European countries, including Ireland and England. With a section on the handling of young offenders and agricultural detention centres, like that at Mettray.
