* PHILIP RASKIN (SCOTTISH b. 1947) HOME SHORES oil on canvas, signed and dated '05framedimage size 39cm x 90cm, overall size 53cm x 103cm Note: Born in 1947, Philip studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1960s. However, due to his father's untimely death, he had to postpone his career in art and left art school to enter the business world where he stayed for the next 30 years. For 20 of those years, he was the well known proprietor of The Inn on the Green, a celebrated jazz restaurant, in Glasgow. During this time, he maintained his contact with the world of art however, by running a schedule of art exhibitions and openings within the venue. Upon leaving the restaurant in the 1990s, Philip returned to his easel and brushes and since then has become a successful full time artist with broad appeal. He now lives and works from his studio just outside Glasgow. Philip's unique style is instantly recognisable combining a heavy impasto application of the paint alongside more delicate and sensitive brush strokes. Focussing mainly on landscape painting, his inspiration comes from the islands of the west coast of Scotland with Barra, Islay, Jura and Arran being some of his favourite locations. He deftly captures the essence and light of the landscapes through his work, the rugged shorelines, dramatic seascapes and ever changing skies. "I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy. No people, no houses, no telegraph poles; just expansive skies, mist tumbling on a distant hillside and a silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending". Philip is also the father of Natasha Raskin Sharp who for several years worked for McTear's and is now a regular TV expert and host on shows such as "Bargain Hunt" (BBC1) and others.

* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), BRIGHT SPRING FLOWERS oil on board, signedframed and under glassimage size 46cm x 50cm, overall size 67cm x 72cm Comment: probably a relatively early work by Ethel Walker and another exceptional example following several outstanding paintings by Walker to feature in our auctions over the last couple of years.Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer). In our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer) and "Study in Blue" sold for £2400 (hammer) in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 8th December 2022 (lot 16).

Ms Anita Saraswathy (Gallery Manager, REDSEA Gallery) has recently confirmed the current gallery price for a Kys work of this size is SG$9000 (approximately £5030). Note: "Kys" was born in 1949. His quest of the spiritual world of Asia began 30 years ago when he left France to travel through India, Nepal, Thailand and Japan. With an impeccable photo-realistic painting technique and a mastery of light and shade, Kys depicts the particular quality of each Jayavarman (King of Cambodia) or nude image. Using acrylic paint, gold or silver leaf and other secret ingredients; in his Jayavarman paintings he depicts the ancient patina of stone statues, worn by thousands of years of monsoon rains. Kys says “When I paint, I pray with my brush.” Modestly, he sees himself as merely a channel between the model and the viewer. Kys will paint his subject from a figurehead (his nudes from live model). Several layers of acrylic paint are used on the canvas. His subject is then painted on these layers enhancing the texture, tones and depth by using gold and silver leaf. His technique produces an incredible three-dimensional image, almost as if it was a hologram. The text he uses are single words, stamped on, written in ancient Khmer, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and other Asian languages. Their meanings are simple; Happiness, love, health, kindness, warmth and other words that collectively do not make a single sentence but bring the understanding and feeling of peace and harmony to the viewer.

Schooled at Ayr Grammar & Ayr Academy, much of his youth was spent with the fisherfolk of West Scotland and their boats and he still cruises these waters each year. He trained at Glasgow School of Art, where he studied under Donaldson, Mathieson and Robertson. His work reflects their influences and those of the Scottish colourists who like him, spent much time in the wonderful light and colours of the West Coast. Painting in this tradition, he works with oils on canvas, using both brush and knife. In 1985, after many years in banking, he returned to Art & Design when he established an interior design company in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. He continued to work in oils, mainly commissions for corporate and private clients, but it was not until 1999, when the company was sold, that more time became available for painting. His work is successfully shown in many galleries in England, Scotland and abroad, most recently in Istanbul, where he was invited, as a result of commission work, to have a solo exhibition at the British Embassy, and a subsequent solo at one of the premier galleries in the city. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, London, in November 2004. In recent years exhibition venues have included: Rowles Fine Arts, Strathearn Gallery, Greens & Blues Gallery, Morningside Gallery, Annan Gallery, Iona House Gallery, Alpha Gallery, Queens Gallery, Gigha Gallery and Frames Gallery. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 9th May 2021, two Iona paintings by Erni Upton (lots 787 & 789) sold for prices of £2000 & £2800 (hammer) and in the 2nd March 2023 Scottish Contemporary Art Auction lot 119 TRAIGH NA CRICHE by Erni Upton sold for £2400 (hammer).

However Hockney's studio had no windows, so he painted this imaginary picture instead. It is inspired entirely by pictures in magazines and romantic ideas of the 'Wild West'. The nearest 'Indians' are in fact at least three hundred miles from Boulder. The chair was included for compositional purposes, and to explain its being there Hockney called the Indians 'tired'. The striped mountains in the background were a light-hearted response to contemporary striped, abstract paintings by American artists.

His quest of the spiritual world of Asia began 30 years ago when he left France to travel through India, Nepal, Thailand and Japan. With an impeccable photo-realistic painting technique and a mastery of light and shade, Kys depicts the particular quality of each Jayavarman (King of Cambodia) or nude image. Using acrylic paint, gold or silver leaf and other secret ingredients; in his Jayavarman paintings he depicts the ancient patina of stone statues, worn by thousands of years of monsoon rains. Kys says “When I paint, I pray with my brush.” Modestly, he sees himself as merely a channel between the model and the viewer. Kys will paint his subject from a figurehead (his nudes from live model). Several layers of acrylic paint are used on the canvas. His subject is then painted on these layers enhancing the texture, tones and depth by using gold and silver leaf. His technique produces an incredible three-dimensional image, almost as if it was a hologram. The text he uses are single words, stamped on, written in ancient Khmer, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and other Asian languages. Their meanings are simple; Happiness, love, health, kindness, warmth and other words that collectively do not make a single sentence but bring the understanding and feeling of peace and harmony to the viewer.

Note: Born in Rochdale in 1945, Howard Butterworth is a renowned Scottish artist who has lived and painted professionally in Northern Scotland since 1968. Howard captures the atmospheric light and colours of Scotland especially around Balmoral, Royal Deeside, Cairngorms National Park and the Scottish Highlands. Capturing the moods and seasons as only an Aberdeenshire-based artist painting outdoors can, Butterworth paints 'en plein air' and he describes his style of painting as "emotional realism".
