William Wilberforce, leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade, was born in Hull. He began his political career in 1780 and was member of parliament for Yorkshire between 1784 and 1812. Since Wilberforce was the chief parliamentary advocate for the abolition of the slave trade, slavery became an important local issue in Hull, from whence it soon spread further afield. The Sheffield Female Anti-Slavery Society was particularly active. By lectures and pamphlets, the society successfully boycotted to decrease sales of West Indian goods produced by slaves, such as coffee and sugar, and in 1827 it became the first anti-slavery society in Britain to call for the immediate emancipation of slaves. [Midgley, Dr. Samuel]. Hallifax, and its Gibbet-Law Placed in a True Light. To Which are Added, the Unparallel’d Tragedies Committed by Sir John Eland, of Eland, and his Grand Antagonists, 1st ed., pub. William Bently, 1708, two parts in one, 174pp., woodcut illustration, title with marginal repair, A10 with repaired tear, some light soiling and ink splashes, one or two leaves close-trimmed, 20th c. blindstamped calf, 12mo. Granted the right to execute criminals in Halifax by the Crown from 1286, the Halifax Gibbet, an early type of guillotine, was used to dispatch 53 men and women from 1286 to 1650, for theft (usually cloth) over the value of twelve pence, but if the offender escaped and made it over the parish boundary line (about 500 yards from one side) he or she was reprieved. Together with a Description of the Town, the Nature of the Soil, the Temper and Disposition of the People..., To which are added, the unparallel’d tragedies committed by Sir John Eland, of Eland, and his grand antagonists, 2 parts in one, Halifax: printed by P. Darby, for John Bentley, [1761], pp.[iv],95,[1], eng. frontis., some browning and spotting, near contemp. calf gilt, slightly rubbed to joints, small 8vo. The volume is believed to have been written by Dr. Samuel Midgley, a practitioner in physic in Halifax. He was a prisoner for debt in York Castle in 1685, and three times in Halifax Jail, where he died in 1695. The work was written during his imprisonment but his poverty prevented him printing it. William Bentley, whose name appears at the end of the dedication. Bentley was Clerk of the Parish Church of Halifax, and he made no mention of Samuel Midgley in the volume. An earlier volume of this work was published 1708, which had a different title and publisher’s name to the dedication. Boyne 125. (1)
