A 19th century ebonised chiffonier, with a pierced gallery back, enclosed by panelled doors, inset with Chinese famille verte porcelain panels, depicting an extensive landscape scene with figures, 165cm wide. Provenance: this was originally owned by the vendor's great grandfather Rev W H Beach, who was Canon at St John's Cathedral, Hong Kong, as a military chaplain in the 1860's. It was handed down to his son, General William Beach, who used it whilst serving in India, then passed to his son, General Sir Hugh Beach, who lived in Hampshire, before it was inherited by the current owner.CONDITION REPORT: Basically solid and usable, but is untidy and is dirty. There are a few light marks to the black finish, showing the wood underneath. One of the large panels on the front is cracked vertically down the centre, the others appear to be sound, although we have not been able to remove them to check. The lock has been removed. Inside is scruffy also, with lots of wear to the surface. Fret carving looks complete, although there are some old breaks. Additional dimensions are 151cm high, 45cm deep. The larger panels measure 59 x 23cm. Smaller panels measure 29 x 8.5cm and 23 x 9.5cm.NOTE: This lot was sold previously on 27 April 2019, for a hammer price £45,800 It is being re-offered at the request of the vendor, as the buyer has defaulted on the payment.
