Guernsey stamps - 'Stories from The Great War' limited edition folder this limited edition folder has been created to house the complete set of stamps from our Great War series (limited number 1918 only), which was launched on 11.11.2014, this set with the serial number 1914 (the start of The Great War), the set includes issue one: GUERNSEY'S SIX; issue two: THE ROLE OF THE POST OFFICE; issue three: GUERNSEY'S BLUEJACKETS; issue four: GUERNSEY'S AIRMEN; issue five: GUERNSEY'S MEMORIALS, the fold-out making the shape of a cross, and naming nearly 1,500 men and women of the Bailwick who lost their lives, the centre with a reproduction of The king's Colours that were presented to the 1st Battalion, Royal Guernsey Light Infantry.proceeds kindly donated by The Guernsey Post Office to Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, CH51.

(1) by various writers, artists and musicians including John Ruskin (clipped from a letter to his father, with several partial lines of holograph text to the recto and verso, in part, '….and by the riverside in the meadows & it's such a lovely day it is like being abroad….'), John Everett Millais, Thomas Sidney Cooper (an interesting A.L.S. referring to the cost of a painting, '….with regard to a small picture 14 In. would be £65, but I do not wish to paint any more so small as my eyes are not so strong as they were…..I could paint you one 18 x 14 for £84 - which would enable me to give a good group of 5 sheep….', 12th July 1870), Harry Plunket Greene & Charles Villiers Stanford (together on a page removed from an autograph album and dated Malvern, 20th October 1909) etc. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, generally about VG, 5
GREENE GRAHAM: (1904-1991) English Novelist. A.L.S., Graham, one page, 8vo, Antibes, 27th January 1987, to Max [Gallo]. Greene thanks his correspondent for a copy of La Justice ('Que passé la justice du Roi') and remarks that he thinks that he will enjoy it, further informing his correspondent of his forthcoming travel arrangements to Paris and Russia and enquiring whether there would be a suitable opportunity to be able 'to fit in at least a drink & a gossip about Pasqua?!'. A letter of good association. Some very light, extremely minor creases, VG Max Gallo (1932-2017) French Writer, Historian & Politician. Greene is most likely referring to Charles Pasqua (1927-2015) in the present letter. The French businessman and politician served as Interior Minister from 1986-88 and is most remembered for his series of anti-immigration laws and declaration that 'we will terrorise the terrorists'.
LITERATURE: Small selection of A.Ls.S. etc. by various Victorian novelists comprising H. Rider Haggard (to the author, antiquarian and expert on bookplates Egerton Castle, sending an introduction to Rose, 5th February 1896), Thomas Hughes (a lengthy A.L.S., three pages, 8vo, Bracknell, Easter Monday, 1889, to Miss. Fox, thanking her for the kindness she had shown to his children during a trip to Cornwall and remarking 'I should like to know what you made of Arthur who is a character & one which much puzzles his mother & myself…..we have given in to his desire to turn philosopher, & to spend his life in the pursuit of what I suppose this generation calls culture. We have only insisted that he shall first pass his examinations…..he is really a diligent student, though in fields where I fear he can only gather thistles & the like….') and Charles Kingsley (2; one on A.L.S., three pages, 8vo, Eversley, 1st November 1850, to a gentleman, stating, in part, 'I shall….consider it a great honour to have any poetry of mine set to music by the composer of the Captive Knights, & I beg you will transmit any permission necessary….I have recd. the Record this morning “Whose blame in praise” I assure you I am as thick skinned as the hippotamus in the Regents Park. I did not write Alton Locke without counting the cost of all this - & besides, you know, it saves advertisements - wh. save money', and the other an unrelated autograph envelope signed by Kingsley, addressed in his hand to the hymnologist Rev. T[homas]. V[incent]. Fosbery at Reading, bearing a Penny Red postage stamp and postmarked November 1864). A good group of letters etc. with interesting content and associations. CAMPBELL-BANNERMAN HENRY: (1836-1908) British Prime Minister 1905-08. Brief A.L.S., H. Campbell-Bannerman, one page, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 8th December 1906, to Bernard Morling, on the black bordered mourning stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury. The Prime Minister writes, in full, 'I most gladly enclose a contribution (no longer present) to the wedding present to Mr. Ellis'. With blank integral leaf. WELLES ORSON: (1915-1985) American Actor & Film Director, Academy Award winner. A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Welles in a head and shoulders pose wearing a large overcoat, scarf and hat. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the background. Some light creasing to the corners and edges of the photograph and one very small area of paper loss to the border of the lower left corner, otherwise about VG
ASTAIRE FRED: (1899-1987) American Actor & Dancer, Academy Award winner. Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Astaire in a full length dance pose in costume as John 'Lucky' Garnett alongside Ginger Rogers, in costume as Penelope Carroll, in a scene from the musical comedy film Swing Time (1936). COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: J Seymour Lyndsay, Iron and Brass Implements of the English House, 1970, fig 288 in which a drawing of a similar 3-branch chandelier from Randle Holme's Academy of Armory (published 1688) is shown.
