Dora Billington (1890-1968) Large bowl decorated with abstract design, circa 1930-50 Glazed earthenware Impressed mark 'DB' 14cm high, 34cm diameter Footnote Dora Billington is regarded as a seminal figure in the British studio pottery movement of the 20th century. Billington taught pottery for most of her life (between 1919 and 1955) at the Royal college of Art and Central Saint Martins respectively. Although she was an incredibly skilled and influential potter in her own right, her life and work remains under documented. Today she is better known for the people she taught than for her own work. Her students included Alan Caiger-Smith, William Newland, Margaret Hine, Kenneth Clark, Ann Wynne-Reeves, Gordon Baldwin, Quentin Bell, Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie, Stella Crofts, Ursula Mommens, Ray Finch, Ruth Duckworth to name but a few. Condition Report: Small area (approx. 2cm wide) of re-glued chip to rim, fine hair line emanating from said chip. There is another fine hairline to rim. Fine craquelure to glaze throughout. The springs have been replaced and there are some small losses to the grooves that house the springs.

There are small losses to gilding to several gold pieces with a small chipped loss to the top of finger on the crescent moon piece. One foot of a red piece appears to have been re -placed, I would imagine by the artist. There is a small age related crack to the foot of one of the white pieces.
