JORDAN DOROTHEA: (1761-1816) Anglo-Irish actress and courtesan, the long-time mistress of Prince William, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV). A scarce A.L.S., D Jordan, two pages, 8vo, n.p., 22nd September n.y., to a gentleman. Jordan writes in a somewhat idiosyncratic fashion, at times in the third person, in full, 'Being very desirous to see (?) Mrs. Wells & her family, requests he will have the goodness to inform his friends that she will perform tomorrow night in the play - from circumstances I could not give a more early notice'. With integral address leaf in Jordan's hand (the name of the recipient illegible). A slim portion of the edge of the integral address leaf has been neatly cut away. FITZHERBERT MARIA: (1756-1837) British high society figure, the clandestine wife of George, Prince of Wales (later King George IV). A.L.S., M Fitzherbert, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Friday Evg'), to Miss. Boyle. The Prince's long-time companion writes, in part, 'I am happy to be able to offer you a place in my Box for the Opera tomorrow night. I will if agreeable to you send my carriage for you a little before eight o'clock….as you perhaps wd. not like going there alone….'. Some light age wear and small, minor areas of paper loss to two corners and with a neat tear to the left edge of a fold (professionally repaired to the verso). About VG
LUXEMBURG ROSA: (1871-1919) Polish-German Revolutionary, a Marxist Philosopher and anti-war Activist. Luxemburg was summarily executed by the SPD Freikorps when they crushed the revolt known as The Spartacist Uprising. An idolized and controversial historical figure in Poland and Germany. Very rare and unusual multiple signed A.L.S., `Rosa Luxemburg´, one page, to a postcard, n.p. [Germany], n.d. [30th March] 1905, to comrade André Morizet, in French. The unusual postcard includes three different written texts signed by three different women, the first seven lines paragraph in the hand of Rosa Luxemburg, a second nine lines paragraph beneath in the hand of Henriette Roland Holst-van der Schalk (1869-1952) Dutch Poet and communist Activist. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and a third one of three lines to the left border by Luize Kautsky (1864-1944) German Politician. A member of the USPD. She married the prominent Marxist theorist Karl Kautsky. As a Jew she was deported in 1944 to Auschwitz where she died. Luxemburg states `Cher camarade Morizet! Trois charmantes dames: Mme Luize Kautsky, Mme Henriette Roland-Holst et moi viennent vous déposer une prière: veuillez bien nous envoyer à nous deux dernières les deux photographies de `la danse du ventre´ de Van Kol, que vous avez envoyées à Kautsky. A.L.S., Jennie Cornwallis-West, one page, 8vo, Salisbury Hall, St. Albans, 18th November 1909, to a lady. Churchill writes, in full, 'In answer to your letter I have pleasure in sending you a copy of my book (no longer present) for your stall in aid of the Victoria Hospital for Children'. LESSEPS FERDINAND DE: (1805-1894) French diplomat and developer of the Suez Canal. A fine vintage signed and inscribed sepia carte-de-visite photograph, the albumen print by Etienne Carjat of Rue Laffitte (Paris) depicting Lesseps standing in a three-quarter length pose and holding a pair of spectacles in one hand. Signed ('Ferd. de Lesseps') in dark fountain pen ink to a clear area at the head of the verso. Dated May 1861 in an unidentified hand at the base of the verso. Photographer's imprint to the lower mount and verso. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGEtienne Carjat (1828-1906) French photographer, caricaturist and journalist.
EIFFEL GUSTAVE: (1832-1923) French civil engineer whose company designed and built the Eiffel Tower for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris. A.L.S., G. Eiffel, one page, 8vo, Rue Fouquet, Paris, 17th September 1888, to [Ernest] Mouchez ('Mon cher amiral'), on the printed stationery of G. Eiffel, Constructions Metalliques, in French. Eiffel states that his correspondent is 'a thousand times kind' for having sent him such gracious words, and adds that he regrets not having seen him on Saturday. Eiffel also explains that a meeting has taken place, but not at the ordinary location, but instead at the home of the Director of Works, Monsieur Alphand. With blank integral leaf. A very light, extremely minor band of discoloration to the edges, only very slightly affecting the text and signature, otherwise VG Ernest Mouchez (1821-1892) French naval officer who became director of the Paris Observatory in 1878. Adolphe Alphand (1817-1891) French engineer of the Corps of Bridges and Roads who also served as Minister of Works and Commissioner for the 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris.
HOUDINI HARRY: (1874-1926) Hungarian-American magician, escape artist, illusionist and stunt performer. A.Q.S., Harry Houdini, on a small 8vo page removed from an autograph album, n.p., 31st December 1904. In dark fountain pen ink Houdini has penned his familiar sentiment, 'Love Laughs at Locksmiths, So does Harry Houdini', adding the date in his hand beneath his signature. Some light staining and minor age wear, G The present autograph dates from the same year in which Houdini was challenged by the Daily Mirror newspaper in London to escape from their especially commissioned handcuffs which had apparently taken five years to make. The much-hyped event took place on 17th March 1904 and, after just over an hour, Houdini emerged free and declared that it had been one of the most difficult escapes of his career.
FROMME LYNETTE: (1948- ) American Criminal, a member of the infamous Manson Family who was imprisoned for her attempted assassination of American President Gerald R. Ford in 1975. A.L.S., Red (being her name within the Manson Family), four pages, 4to, n.p. (Metropolitan Correction Centre, San Diego, California), n.d., to [Charles Manson]. Fromme writes, in part, 'I got the riff ticket and sent in for a riff. I also got another letter from you & one from Blue. Both I haven't red yet. It's lamp time and the quiet has jabbering voices in it of experiences escaping Mexican prisons. I'm yawning. I read Time & Newsweeks all day yesterday & dreamt last night of Jimmy Carter & tried to chase his face out of my dream……And Jimmy Carter even has fat arms like me & the same kind of legs. Some way it's an inherited thing & I always thought it was just me who was a freak…..I understand where you are and probly (sic) most of what faces you are seeing…it's a mighty long walk in the park huh? Hard as anyone tries, there's just no back steppin'. I'm not as complicated as you think. Is there anything you could use there that you don't have? You didn't get my letter I sent or you'd have my address….It's really f-ked that they would let yer letters out & rip off mine - unless to just isolate you…..take it ez and shine on them bitches when you can….' Fromme continues her letter with a lengthy postscript, in part, 'On the fast - I don't want to lie again & keep the whole world for my own. Once you said a guy who did that got his mom's death wish. But I already thought of a long fast last week - not that long but no buts all my weakness screams and all my strength laughs at it. In my reason a voice says that if I don't fight for my life I don't get it. That's those other people's thought who tried to get me to fight. And part of me says that's right. What's the other part say? Says maybe what's it I'm not sure back & forth wonder where I put the reals real of the knowing it now and god I better wake up. What's so funny about me caring. No I don't know what Pat G is doing off into gold & left that for you to say. Only because I can't handle what I don't see & I spose (sic) I'm lazy…..No a sign post isn't my god and not Jimmy Carter with fat arms or any of that other BS'. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Fromme to Manson at Vacaville, California, and signed ('Lynette Fromme') by her in the return address. Together with an A.L.S., Sister Margaret (twice), by an unidentified lady, four pages (separate leaves), 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Charles [Manson]. Sister Margaret writes an Evangelical letter, in part, 'God made everything in the world, and he made me, and he made you. And He made everything in his image. That is, He made everything good, and He is Good, and He wants us to live for Him, and that is the greatest good. Sometimes, like Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, we get "separated from the presence of God" (in our lives) and we have to get back together with Him, and that is LOVE and that is what He wants, and this was Christ's mission…..', further explaining that she has been away at a retreat and is sending Manson a badge given to her by one of the nuns, as well as a cross and some books, and suggesting that Manson's cell is his monastery, also writing that she is about to leave on a missionary journey, but before she leaves she 'will try take a cross to Lynette Fromme', and asking that Manson prays for the sisters, concluding 'I believe in miracles - God will help us - we just have to follow Him'. Hand addressed by Manson to the verso. A couple of very light creases, otherwise VG Nuel Melton Emmons (1927-2002) American photojournalist and biographer of Manson. Emmons first met Manson briefly when he was imprisoned for automobile theft in 1956, and again under similar circumstances in 1960. In 1979, he contacted Manson and began extensive interviews and his correspondence with Manson resulted in the book In His Own Words - The Shocking Confessions of the Most Dangerous Man Alive (1986).

So meaney (sic) things have came between us that I can't keep track - you pushed if off on the chick the last time we took pictures & you have cut me off of things & things have cut us off from each other - I got no bad for you & I don't want it to pile up to where eather (sic) one of us start shooting arows (sic) at each other - If you feel I got anything comeing (sic) from you give it your self. I don't need nothing & what ever I need or want I can git for my self. It would of been nice had we been able to git it right for the 2 of us but that's not working out. Not because of you or me & there is no blame to push, no negitive (sic) - its just not working - That's not my book & if your lieing (sic) about a chickenshit 50 or a hand full of pictures I can emagian (sic) what you got in that book - That's your book an how you see what ever is best for you……you still haven't got through the doors of my understandings of what I'm doing, what I'm doing is also controled (sic) by others….don't be mad at me or push off on me because I was nice & week & a chump & I won't be mad at you. FAMOUS MEN & WOMEN: An unusual vintage signed 16.5 x 14.5 photograph by the 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944) English peer and sportsman, founding member and first president of the National Sporting Club, who also donated the original Lonsdale Belts in 1909 for the boxing championship trophy, the image depicting him seated outdoors in a full-length pose accompanied by several dogs. Photograph by Stanley M. Ballance and signed by him in pencil to the lower mount. Signed ('With all the best of wishes from Lonsdale') by Lonsdale in dark fountain pen ink at the base of the image and dated 19th September 1941 in his hand. With a small label neatly affixed to the upper right corner bearing the typed caption, 'Photograph of Lord Lonsdale presented to Mr. Gus Demmy'. ESCOFFIER AUGUSTE: (1846-1935) French chef and restaurateur who popularised and updated traditional French cooking methods. A.L.S., A Escoffier, two pages (separate leaves), 8vo, London, 15th January 1924, to Madame and Monsieur Bernard Van Horne Schultz, on the attractive red printed stationery of the Charing Cross Hotel, in French. Escoffier thanks his correspondents for the good wishes that they sent to him for the New Year, which he reciprocates and expresses his wish that 1924 will bring them joy and happiness, continuing to remark 'Je suis, actuellement, a Londres pour y traiter une affaire de "Club Restaurant" , bien que, assez difficile, j'espere reussin. Mais de loute facon, je compte allez passer le mois de Fevrier a Monte Carlo, ou peutetre aurai je l'avantage de vous y rencontrer' (Translation: 'I am currently in London to deal with the business of the “Club Restaurant”, although quite difficult, I hope to succeed. But anyway, I intend to spend the month of February in Monte Carlo, where perhaps I will have the advantage of meeting you there'). Rare. CURNONSKY: (1872-1956) Maurice Edmond Sailland. French writer, known as the Prince of Gastronomy, one of the most celebrated writers on gastronomy in France in the 20th century. A.L.S., Curnonsky, one page, 4to, Paris, 10th October 1933, to a friend ('Cher Grand Enqueteur'), on the printed stationery of the President of the Academie des Gastronomes (the title etc. lightly crossed through in ink), in French. Curnonsky writes a charming, light-hearted letter on the passing of time, 'Hélas! Cher Grand Enqueteur, j'ai passe depuis tantot un demi siecle l'age heureux ou lon recoit des Etrennes, et ma....qui n'a d'egale que celle de St. Francois d'Assise....la joie d en donner. Quant a reformer le calendrier, voila trente ans que je demande qu'il soit enfin republicain et que les mois designes par des etiquettes romaines surannees, reprennent les noms charmants et si joliement symboliques et musicaux que leur avait donner le bon Fabre d'Eglantine. Floreal ou tiens tous le printemps, Thermidor tout brulant des chaleurs de l'ete, Ventose ou souffle la bise hivernale. Mais ils sont douze! Et il se fait tarde…' (Translation: 'Alas! Dear Grand Investigator, I have spent half a century past the happy age when one receives gifts, and my…..is only equalled by that of Sir Francis de Assis….the joy of giving. CHILD JULIA: (1912-2004) American cooking teacher and author of Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961 & 1970) which is recognised for introducing French cuisine to the American public. T.L.S., Julia, one page, 4to, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 12th November 1970, to Miss Eleanor Friede, senior editor at The Macmillan Company, on the attractive printed stationery of L'Ecole des Trois Gourmandes. Child states that she is delighted to hear that Mary Frances's Art of Eating is returning to the bookstores ('I treasure my copy indeed') although continues to remark 'I would indeed like to say a few choice words on the jacket, but I have had to rule them out for everyone else, and cannot, in good conscience, make exceptions. (This sort of thing has become such a racket, unfortunately, that angels must suffer along with the rogues.) I shall, however, talk it up every chance I have'. In a postscript Child further adds 'This is cowardly, I admit - - but if I had a weekly or monthly column I could praise what I loved and ignore or skip over lightly what I did not like. That is where the professional critics are the best sources of quotes. Shana Alexander, however, said she was free to praise Mary Frances extravagantly, as she deserves'. VERTES MARCEL: (1895-1961) French costume designer and illustrator. A charming illustrated A.L.S., Vertes, one page, 4to, Rue de la Faisanderie, Paris, n.d. ('Mardi'), to a gentleman, in French. Vertes writes, in full, 'Deux fautemils por Jeudi soir….J'ai fait une promesse a mes tres bons amis, que faire? Je suis tres exigeant, je le sais. Merci d'avance (Translation: 'Two seats for Thursday evening….I made a promise to my very good friends, what should I do? I am very demanding, I know it. Thank you in advance'). At the head of the page, where the printed address appears, Vertes has drawn a dove in flight whilst holding, in its beak, an envelope upon which appears the day Mardi, and at the foot of the letter, in the lower left corner, appears another illustration by Vertes of a naked young lady, with her back to the viewer, holding a pen in one raised hand as she underlines the artist's signature at the conclusion of the letter. MESTROVIC IVAN: (1883-1962) Croatian sculptor and architect. T.L.S., I Mestrovic, one page, 4to, n.p. (Zagreb?), 10th March 1936, to Paul Mannoni, art critic at L'Ami du people, in French. Mestrovic states that he has read his correspondent's article and is very grateful to him for the sympathy he has shown 'dans cet article a l'egard de mon oeuvre et de mon pays' (Translation: 'in this article with regard to my work and my country'), further adding that his friend, Voutchetitch, had sent him a biographical article which was first published in the Parisian press and concluding by adding that if Mannoni happens to return to Yugoslavia he would be happy to see him in Zagreb. HENNER JEAN-JACQUES: (1829-1905) French painter. A good original pen and ink drawing signed by Henner, one page, 8vo, n.p.. n.d. In dark purple ink Henner has executed a sketch of a young lady in a profile head and shoulders (somewhat reminiscent of his painting Head of a Girl, housed in the Brooklyn Museum). Signed ('J J Henner') with his name alone at the base of the drawing. One slight smudge to the final letter of the signature and a few very light, minor stains, caused by the traces of former mounting to the verso. About VG
GAUGUIN PAUL: (1848-1903) French Post-Impressionist artist. A very fine A.L.S., P Gauguin, two pages, 8vo, Lutece (Lutetia, i.e. Paris), 20 Fructidor an 91 (7th September 1883), to his wife, Mette-Sophie Gad ('Chere Madame'), in French. Gauguin writes an affectionate love letter on his wife's birthday, at a time when the artist's marriage was strained and his wife expecting their fifth child, 'Il est important que vous sachiez si le 7 septembre est un jour de fête; peut-être l'avez-vous oublié, vos amis se souviennent et vous félicitent. Vous regardez d'un oeil humide les feuilles tomber sur la terre vous pensez au printemps passé, songez que tout s'en va mais que tout renaît. Vos enfants sont les jeunes pousses qu'un rayon de soleil ranime et fortifie, vous avez une année de moins mais un enfant de plus. Si la vie a quelquefois ses revers à côté de ce grognon de Paul en revanche le bonheur est là où on aime; chez l'époux il y a la sévérité, interrogez son coeur il vous répondra (I elske) [ j'aime, en danois]. Je le connais votre chenapan de mari, il n'ose vous dire aujourd'hui que le 17 Sept. lui rappelle une heureuse naissance; c'est un sceptique d'apparence mais n'en croyez rien je vous réponds de lui. Il me charge de vous l'écrire en peu de mots, la meilleure éloquence c'est la vérité et j'espère chère madame que vous avez confiance dans ma sincérité' (Translation: 'It is important that you know if 7th September is a day of celebration; maybe you forgot it, your friends remember and congratulate you. You watch with a tearful eye the leaves falling on the earth, you think of the past spring, think that everything is going away but that everything is reborn. Your children are young shoots that a ray of sunshine revives and strengthens, you are one year younger but a child older. If life sometimes has its setbacks next to that grumpy Paul, on the other hand happiness is where one loves; in the husband there is severity, ask his heart he will answer you (I elske) ('I love you' in Danish) I know your rascal of a husband, he doesn't dare tell you today that the 17th September reminds him of a happy birth; he looks like a sceptic, but don't believe it, I can vouch for him. He asks me to write it to you in a few words, the best eloquence is the truth and I hope, dear Madame, that you have confidence in my sincerity'). With blank integral leaf. A remarkable and extremely rare letter. Some very light, extremely minor staining and age wear, VG Mette-Sophie Gad (1850-1920) Danis translator, wife of Paul Gauguin from 1873-94. Gad gave birth to their fifth child, Paul Rollon Gauguin (known as Pola), three months after the present letter, on 6th December 1883. Pola Gauguin was to have little interaction with his father, and no direct content after 1890. At the time of the present letter relations between Gauguin and his wife were particularly tense. They had met in 1872 when Gauguin was working as a stockbroker and earning a very considerable amount of money, however in 1882 the Paris stock market crashed, and Gauguin's income deteriorated sharply. He announced to Mette that he was going to pursue painting full-time, although the family quickly fell into poverty which led to them taking refuge in Denmark with Mette's parents. The mention of 17th September in the present letter remains something of a mystery, although clearly had a certain significance between Gauguin and his wife. Could it be a reference to their first romantic encounter? The Institut national d'histoire de l'art (INHA) hold some eighty letters by Gauguin, although the earliest to Mette dates from May 1885. The tone of the present letter, in which Gauguin speaks of himself in the third person, is unusual, and as public collections do not contain any letters to Mette from a similar period, it is difficult to establish whether the artist frequently adopted this falsely light and playful tone, most likely adopted to charm his wife and seek 'forgiveness' on her birthday. It is tempting to feel here the presence, or at least the positive bonhomie influence, of Gauguin's best friend and intimate adviser, Emile Shuffenecker, under whose dictation it may have been written.
VALLOTTON FELIX: (1865-1925) Swiss-French painter and printmaker, associated with Les Nabis. An original pencil drawing, unsigned, by Vallotton, on a small oblong 8vo page seemingly removed from a notebook, n.p., n.d. Vallotton's preparatory drawing depicts two buildings, with a fence or hedgerow in the foreground and various tall trees in the immediate background. Certain parts of the drawing are marked by the artist with numbers and other brief annotations, and to the verso appear a series of notes in Vallotton's hand, in French, detailing the colours associated with the numbers, including pinks, yellow and blue ('Roses with a touch of diverse greens….shadows of trees a touch of blue and pink…'). Some light overall age wear and one light stain to the right edge, only very slightly affecting a small area of the drawing. About VG
BONNARD PIERRE: (1867-1947) French painter, a leading figure in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism. A.L.S., P Bonnard, two pages, 8vo, Villa du Bosquet, Le Cannet, Alpes-Maritimes, n.d. ('Lundi'; annotated in another hand 9th November 1936), to Rodrigues, in French. Bonnard informs his correspondent that 'Je vous fais un second envoi de dessin et une aquarelle. Il faudrait faire encadrer le tout s'il est encore temps.' (Translation: 'I am sending you a second drawing and a watercolour. It should be framed if there is still time'), further supplying the name and address of his framer, remarking 'Il connait mon genre' (Translation: 'He knows my genre'), and concluding by remarking that maybe he will be in Paris to see the exhibition if it runs until December. In a postscript to the integral leaf Bonnard states 'Pour les prix demandez de 4 a 600 Fr vous prendrez votre commission. Pour l'aquarelle je veux 2500. Un dessin n'est pas a vendre je l'ai marque derriere' (Translation: 'For prices ask from 4 to 600 Francs, you will take your commission. For the watercolour I want 2500. A drawing is not for sale, I have marked it on the back'). A couple of very light, extremely minor stains, VG Jacques Rodrigues-Henriques (1886-1968) French art dealer who frequently exhibited works by Bonnard in the 1930s.
NAUDIN BERNARD: (1876-1946) French painter, designer, caricaturist and engraver. A small group of three original pen and ink illustrations drawn and signed ('Bernard Naudin', and one with his initials) by Naudin, each one page, folio, n.p., n.d. (c.1930). The drawings feature a blacksmith's anvil and sledgehammer, with several other tools strapped to the tree trunk upon which the anvil is placed; a bright sunrise over country fields with several trees in the foreground and edges; and two haystacks in a field with a river running to one side. Each of the illustrations were published in the Pax Mundi book. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG, 3 The Pax Mundi book, an anthology of sentiments on peace, was published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.
MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French artist. Book signed and inscribed, being a large folio edition of Seize Peintures 1939-1943, First Edition published by Editions du Chene, Paris, 1943, with an introduction by Andre Lejard, with twelve of the sixteen colour plates present (lacking III, IV, VIII and XVI). Signed by Matisse in bold pencil to a clear area at the head of the first page of text, 'A Mademoiselle Simone Vincent, hommage respectueux, Henri Matisse', and dated Vence, 8th February 1944 in his hand. An interesting association piece. The binding loose and defective, some tears and chipping to the edges of the paper wrappers, and some light staining, the signed page unaffected. FR Simone 'Monette' Vincent, a friend and model of Matisse, was the subject of several portraits by the artist in 1942, including La femme en rose, and may also have been the subject of one of the works reproduced in the present edition.
MUNNINGS ALFRED: (1878-1959) English painter, remembered for his studies of horses. A.L.S., Alfred Munnings, one page, 8vo, Castle House, Dedham, Colchester, 28th June 1956, to a gentleman. Munnings writes a hasty letter, in part, 'I am unable to take on any more DOs. No more addresses &c. I love Gloucester & The Bell. Have stayed there'. A few very light, minor creases, VG
SCORSESE MARTIN: (1942- ) American film director, Academy Award winner. A good signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Scorsese standing in a half-length pose alongside actors Robert De Niro (in costume as Travis Bickle) and Jodie Foster (in costume as Iris Steensma) on the set of the psychological thriller film Taxi Driver (1976). Signed by Scorsese in bold black fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. VG Provenance: The present photograph originates from the collection of Pierre Goulliard, a French gentleman who, for over 50 years, dedicated himself to obtaining in person autographs of British, American and European movie stars, always obtaining the signatures in fountain pen ink.
ERNST MAX: (1891-1976) German painter, sculptor, printmaker and graphic artist, a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe. A good original black pen and ink drawing signed by Ernst, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. On a page which has most likely been neatly removed from an autograph album Ernst has drawn an image of a bird like figure, with a green eye, seemingly preparing to emerge from an egg (featuring a red circular dot), evidently a representation of Loplop, Father Superior of the Birds, the alter ego of Ernst. Signed ('Max Ernst') with his name alone at the foot of the drawing. Some light ink bleeding to the drawing and signature, and a couple of very minor, extremely light creases, otherwise VG
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good signed and inscribed 6 x 4 postcard photograph by Picasso `Para mis amigos Pallarés, 1917 Picasso´ in Spanish ("To my friends Pallarés, 1917 Picasso") Signed and inscribed in bold brown ink to the verso of a postcard showing to the front Picasso´s early work Verre et Bouteille de Rhum (1914) ("Glass and Bottle of Rum"). Attractively framed and glazed beneath a 6 x 4 image of Picasso´s painting Verre et Bouteille de Rhum, identical to the image shown to the front of the postcard, to an overall of 14.5 x 17.5 (37 cm x 17.5 cm). With very slightly light ink, otherwise G to VG The present autograph provenance is from the Pallarés family collection.Manuel Pallares i Grau (1876-1974) met for the first time Pablo Picasso, five years younger, the first day they assisted to the School of Arts in Barcelona in 1895. Since that day and until Picasso´s death, they remained friends, a friendship which last 78 years. Pallarés worked as assistant to Picasso´s father, teacher at Llotja, and replaced him when he retired. From 1896 to 1899 they spent long periods together, studying and on holidays. Pablo would spend over eight consecutive months at Horta del Ebro, village where Pallarés´ family home was located, to recover from scarlet fever. Later in his life, and during few days journey of Pallarés visiting his friend Picasso, Pablo recalled how Pallarés saved him from falling and dying drowned in a mighty river, mentioning that he didn´t know how to swim at that time, and recalling that he said `I will never forget that you have saved my life"
MAAR DORA: (1907-1997) French photographer, painter and poet, a romantic partner of Pablo Picasso (from 1935-43) and the subject of several of his portraits. A brief A.L.S., Dora, also signed ('Picasso') by her on behalf of Pablo Picasso, to the verso of a colour picture postcard depicting the harbour and boats at Cannes, n.p. (Cannes?), n.d. (late 1930s?), to Man Ray, in French. Maar states 'Voici un cadeau charmant' (Translation: 'Here is a charming gift') and appears to send a thousand kisses. Beneath Maar's letter appears a note signed by Rosemonde (possibly Rosemonde Wilms, the nom de plume of Rosemonde Gion de Romesnil whose portrait Man Ray had taken in 1935 for her book Reflexions d'une innocente) in French in which she thanks Man Ray for some photographs, in full, 'Merci des belles photos. Je croyais vous voir revenir. Tout le monde vous reclame' (Translation: 'Thank you for the beautiful photos. I thought I saw you coming back. Everyone calls for you'). One light surface crease, otherwise VG Man Ray (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer.
PICASSO & MAAR: PICASSO PABLO (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement & MAAR DORA (1907-1997) French photographer, painter and poet, a romantic partner of Pablo Picasso (from 1935-43) and the subject of several of his portraits. An excellent collective A.L.S. by both Picasso ('Picasso') and Maar ('Dora') individually, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1936/7), to Paul and Nusch Eluard, in French. The letter commences with text by Dora Maar, 'Cher Paul et Nusch, Les bonbons etaient bien bons. Vous allez bien? Merci, Dora' (Translation: 'Dear Paul and Nusch, The sweets were very good. Are you doing well? Thanks, Dora') and is immediately followed by Picasso's message, where words and images engender each other in a number of puns, 'Splin du quart de brie dans son slipin car l'une anonime a l'autre bat son plein la fete a plat de cote. Merci, Picasso' (Translation: 'Splin [spleen] from the quarter of brie in its slipin because one anonymous to the other is in full swing the party flat aside. Thanks, Picasso'). The letter further continues with a brief message signed by both Christian Zervosand his wife Yvonne, 'Merci pour les beaux poemes' (Translation: 'Thank you for the beautiful poems'), a further note signed by Juan Larrea and his wife Guite, 'Le plus retardataire des discoboles vous souhaite un retour veloce. Merci' (Translation: 'The most latecomer of the discobolians wishes you a speedy return. Thanks') and concludes with the signature and greeting of Luis Fernandez, 'Salud! Fernandez'. An exceptional letter, with a significant grouping of signatories (most related to the creation of Guernica), and excellent association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Paul Eluard (1895-1952) French poet, one of the founders of the Surrealist movement and a close friend of Picasso. Nusch Eluard (1906-1946) French performer, model and surrealist artist, wife of Paul Eluard from 1934 until her death in 1946. Nusch met her husband through Picasso and was the subject of several cubist portraits and sketches by the artist in the late 1930s, and is said to have had an affair with him. Christian Zervos (1889-1970) Greek-French art historian, critic, collector, writer and publisher who founded the magazine Cahiers d'art and also published a catalogue raisonne of the work of Picasso. Juan Larrea (1895-1980) Spanish essayist and poet. Luis Fernandez (1900-1973) Spanish painter, a friend of Picasso, who had a great influence on his work and with whom he collaborated on several projects including the stage curtain La Depouille du Minotaure en costume d'Arlequin in 1936. In the 1930s Paul Eluard travelled through Europe as an ambassador of the Surrealist movement and when in Spain in 1936 he learned of the Francoist counterrevolution against which he forcefully protested. In the following year the bombing of Guernica inspired Eluard to write the poem Victory of Guernica. During this turbulent time in Spain Eluard and Picasso became inseparable, the poet telling the painter 'you hold the flame between your fingers and paint like a fire'. The bombing of Guernica by Nazi Germany's warplanes, in support of General Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces, also had a profound impact on Juan Larrea. Immediately after hearing about the events of 26th April 1937, Larrea visited Picasso in his Paris studio and urged him to make the bombing the subject for the large mural the Spanish Republican government had commissioned him to create for the Spanish pavilion at the 1937 Paris World's Fair, which resulted in Picasso's anti-war painting Guernica. Regarded by many art critics as the most moving and powerful ant-war painting in history. Guernica was created using a matte house paint specially formulated at Picasso's request. Dora Maar documented its creation in photographs which, according to art historian John Richardson, 'helped Picasso to eschew colour and give the work the black-and-white immediacy of a photograph'
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good book signed and inscribed, incorporating an original drawing by Picasso, being a folio softcover edition of the catalogue issued to accompany an exhibition of Pablo Picasso's works of 1969-70 at the Palais des Papes from 1st May to 30th September 1970, held in conjunction with the 24th Festival d'Avignon and curated by Yvonne Zervos, published by Cahiers d'Art, Paris, 1970. The catalogue features an essay, in French, by Christian Zervos, and two colour plates, 165 monochrome plates of paintings and a further 45 of drawings. The presentation copy is inscribed by Picasso in pale blue crayon to the title page 'Pour Anita, Picasso' and also incorporates an original drawing of a bearded man forcefully staring ahead. Picasso has also drawn several playful wave-and-dot designs to the head and foot of the page, further adding the date, 10th July 1970, in his hand. Bound in the original paper wrappers with blue printed title and spine. Some light age wear and minor staining, predominantly to the covers and spine, and with a few ink annotations in an unidentified hand to the inside pages. About VG Yvonne Zervos (1905-1970) French gallery owner and wife of Christian Zervos with whom she was a co-director of Cahiers d'Art. An expert on Picasso, she organised the exhibition of over 200 works by the artist held in Avignon, the promotional poster for the event posthumously honouring Zervos by proclaiming that she conceived and developed the exhibition in tribute to Picasso. Christian Zervos (1889-1970) Greek-French art historian, critic, collector, writer & publisher who founded the magazine Cahiers d'Art and also published a catalogue raisonne on the work of Picasso.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. An excellent vintage signed 3 x 4.5 (7 x 11.5 cm) photograph incorporating an original drawing by Picasso, the image depicting the artist in a full-length pose, wearing a pair of white shorts and sandals, standing second in-line alongside two unidentified ladies and a gentleman, and, at the back of the line, Picasso’s eldest child, Paulo Picasso can be seen. The five appear to be standing on a small outdoor stage in what appears to be a restaurant, with a number of empty tables and chairs in the background. Signed (‘Picasso’) in blue fountain pen ink with his surname only at the base of the image. To a clear area at the head of the image Picasso has added a charming, small ink drawing of a dove in flight. A rare and desirable signed photograph. Some very light surface creasing and minor age wear, about VG For Picasso the dove was both an important political symbol and a personal one, and in 1949 he created the lithograph Dove (‘La Colombe’) in an edition of 50 and 5 artist’s proofs. The image, of a white dove on a black background, is widely considered to be a symbol of peace and was used to illustrate a poster at the 1949 Paris Peace Congress. The dove illustrated in the lithograph was actually a Milanese pigeon which had been presented as a gift to Picasso by his friend and fellow artist Henri Matisse. Provenance: The photograph is accompanied by a Picasso Authentication certificate issued and signed by Claude Ruiz-Picasso dated at Geneva, 25th April 2022.
‘Picasso y yo’DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. A highly attractive Autograph Statement Signed, Dali, (a large, artistically penned example), one page (stiff off-white card), oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., in Spanish. In bold black ink Dali has penned a brief statement, perhaps reflecting on whom he considers to having been the greatest artists of the 20th century, 'Picasso y yo, Dali'. Each of the letters have been stylishly penned by Dali, effectively creating a piece of art, and some light ink splatters from the nib of his pen only serve to add to the visual appeal. An extremely rare and exceptional example of Dali's autograph, linking the two legendary Spanish artists. Very slightly irregularly cut edges, otherwise VG
ALI & NORTON: ALI MUHAMMAD (1942-2016) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion. & NORTON KEN (1943-2013) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1978. A printed 4to programme for The Fight, Muhammad Ali vs Ken Norton at the Sports Arena, San Diego, California, on 31st March 1973, individually signed to the front cover by both Ali and Norton, both with their names alone in bold gold inks. Some light age wear and minor creasing to the cover, about VG The present programme dates from the first of three fights between Ali and Norton which took place between 1973-76. Norton won the first of the fights on a split decision, igniting a controversy in the boxing world. Soon after the fight Ali was treated in hospital for a broken jaw, an injury he sustained in the second round.
BAWDEN EDWARD: (1903-1989) English painter, illustrator and graphic artist. A.L.S., Edward, four pages, oblong 8vo, Braintree, Essex, 30th July 1957, to Michael Rothenstein. Bawden informs his correspondent that he cannot send him the reproduction of The Bull or of his portrait 'because these are in the paste-up only & no duplicates have been sent', adding that the reproductions seem good compared to the original photographs, and continuing 'The text is another matter & you ought to scan it carefully yourself. Send it back please as soon as you can because I want the least delay in getting corrected proofs to Cowells. The title page is a bit florid but I hope it is not too bad an opening: I feel that the weight & width is right & that something rich is needed to support Walter's design on the cover. The only other thing is that the introduction must be cut by 8 lines….'. In a lengthy postscript, signed with his initial E, Bawden asks Rothenstein if he has any framed prints or drawings in his studio which could be borrowed for the Basildon Arts Festival, explaining 'It's the first time Basildon has had an exhibition. I've received a S.O.S. for help & have got contributions from George [Chapman], Clifford [Webb] & Walter [Hoyle]. Basildon is a new town near Billericay & the Council & Art Society seem to have progressive cultural ideas. As it is in the county I think it is in our interest to give our support'. BAWDEN EDWARD: (1903-1989) English painter, illustrator and graphic artist. A.L.S.. Edward, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (c.1949), to Michael Rothenstein. Bawden announces 'Clive Gardiner has agreed to accept John Wood for Goldsmiths simply upon my word for it that he is a student worth having' and further writes 'I told John that I thought he ought to get to Town next week & see both Camberwell & Goldsmiths for himself, then he would decide which school he liked best. I feel I have interfered enough in J. W.'s affairs - he can now settle the rest for himself, the only thing I wanted to make sure about was that he wld. be able to get into an art-school for certain', also adding 'Well, I don't think I need to give you a letter of introduction to Clive Gardiner because it is unlikely - & quite unnecessary - for you to go to New Cross with an armful of paintings in the event of John's rejection at Camberwell'. Together with a second A.L.S., Edward, three pages, 8vo (folding air mail stationery), Banff, Alberta, n.d. (15th August 1949), also to Michael Rothenstein. Bawden again writes regarding John Wood, stating that he had received his correspondent's letter as well as two from Charlotte (Bawden's wife) telling him 'how troublesome J. W. was being both to you & to her & of his incapacity to look after his own interests', continuing to remark 'My immediate reaction was one of extreme annoyance, & as a consequence I wrote him a very blunt letter to point out that in the first place he ought to accept admission to Camberwell as being in the nature of a privilege, that it was not for him to question whatever Daniels thought of his work but to accept criticism for its own worth, especially when given by a man who had had years of experience…..It must be quite a month ago that I wrote to J.W. to tell him how best to manage his affairs. I did emphasise the necessity of his seeing both schools, Camberwell & Goldsmiths, in order to decide which he preferred, for I had a hunch that if he didn't decide for himself then either you or I would get a backwash of criticism if he disagreed with the school we had either of us chosen……Well, if he doesn't get himself into an Art School by the end of September I intend to give up trying to help him. I must admit my exasperation with J. W. was increased by the reflection that he had some talent & made no use of it, whereas many of the students here who don't seem to possess any talent at all do achieve much more than he has ever done simply because of their enthusiasm to learn & their willingness to work hard. I have never before had a class that has achieved so much. The other day I counted all the finished paintings whc. had been hung on the walls: there were ninety, the result of five weeks work for 15 to 17 students……It is true we had one neurotic creature, a mad middle-aged English woman, who thought she was entitled to a studio & model to herself, but she faded out mercifully on her own accord'. DE MAISTRE ROY: (1894-1968) Australian artist. A.L.S., Roy de Maistre, to two sides of a plain postcard, Eccleston Street, London, n.d., to Sheridan Russell. De Maistre states that it was a pleasure to have seen his correspondent on Sunday, and encourages him to come again when the light lasts longer, explaining 'The sun changes in the process of work & there may be some different pictures to look at', and further discussing the prices of his work, 'Mine are considered about the usual figure for one of my rank & the size of the picture! They are usually well framed & start at £50…..I know this is expensive for most people today & I am often able to take a bit less & they can be paid for over a year or so. As my output now is rather small I have to keep my prices up as it is economically better for me to sell a few pictures at a fairly high price than to try to produce a lot of pictures that could be sold for less - I deplore this situation but have not been able to find any alternative to it…..do not give up the idea of having a picture someday. KOKOSCHKA OSKAR: (1886-1980) Austrian artist. Signed Christmas greetings card, the folding small 8vo card featuring a colour image to the cover, being a reproduction of one of the artist's paintings, signed ('O Kokoschka') by Kokoschka in bold black ink to the inside, beneath a printed greeting in French, and also signed by his wife, Olda Palkovska Kokoschka, who adds the words 'Happy Xmas' in her hand. Together with a second signed Christmas greetings card, the folding 8vo card featuring a reproduction of a drawing by the artist to the cover, signed by Kokoschka, with his initials ('OK') to the inside, also adding a few words in his hand, beneath a printed greeting in German, and also signed ('Olda') by his wife with her name alone. KNIGHT LAURA: (1877-1970) English artist. A.L.S., Laura, and again Laura Knight at the head, one page, slim 4to, St. John's Wood, London, 11th May 1939, to 'My dear Earl'. Knight writes a friendly letter, in part an introduction for a fellow artist, stating 'Mr & Mrs Stoppleman, (sic) our friends, are visiting the States, and as they know very few people, I am venturing to give them an introduction to yourself and Dorothy. Mrs Stoppleman, (sic) whose professional name is 'Clara Klinghoffer', is a very distinguished and talented painter whose work is highly thought of here in England, she is an old and dear friend of mine', Knight continuing to add that she and her husband, Harold, were sorry not to have seen her correspondents when they visited England, remarking 'I have intended writing to you ever since, but work has swallowed me up even more than usual, and I have been fearfully neglectful to all our dear friends. We are now spending a little holiday in Brighton to tone up Harold, who has had a very severe dose of flu, however he is making good progress now'. A letter of interesting association. In 1926 Klinghoffer married the Dutch journalist Joop Stoppelman and three years later they moved to Holland. In 1939, discovering Nazi spies had been planted in the household staff and aware that the invasion of Holland was imminent, Klinghoffer and her family briefly returned to London before departing for the United States, Knight's letter of introduction in hand.
SHEPARD ERNEST H.: (1879-1976) English artist and book illustrator, particularly remembered for his work for Winnie-the-Pooh and The Wind in the Willows. A.L.S., Ernest H. Shepard, one page, 8vo, Lodsworth, near Petworth, 10th July 1970, to Leif Dahlberg and his wife. Shepard thanks his correspondents for their kindness in sending a copy of Svenskav and continues to comment 'Such a lovely book full of charming photographs of the people and places in your country'. BESTALL ALFRED: (1892-1986) British illustrator and writer who submitted Rupert Bear stories for the London Daily Express from 1935-65. A fine, rare original black pen and ink drawing signed by Bestall, on a large 8vo page removed from an autograph album, n.p., n.d. (c.1930s/40s). Bestall has drawn a charming full-length image of Rupert Bear happily walking with a rucksack on his back and wearing his familiar checked trousers and matching scarf. Signed ('A. E. Bestall') by the artist at the foot of his drawing. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a few very insignificant spots of foxing. VG
SEARLE RONALD: (1920-2011) English artist, satirical cartoonist & illustrator, the creator of St. Trinian's School. A good original black pen and ink portrait drawn and signed by Searle, one page, 4to, n.p. (Singapore?), n.d. (c.1944-45). In bold ink Searle has drawn a head and shoulders study of a balding clergyman, possibly a military chaplain, in a seemingly content mood as he smokes his pipe with his eyes closed. Signed ('Ronald Searle') at the base. One slight ink blot to the pipe, a few very minor, light creases and a small, minor area of foxing at the base of the drawing, otherwise about VG

And will continue to pay’RAY MAN: (1890-1976) American visual artist, a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements and a renowned pioneering fashion and portrait photographer. T.L.S., Man Ray, one page, 4to, Paris, 31st January 1962, to Jean. Ray writes in a business-like manner regarding the sales of his works, apologising for writing in English ('in which language I can express myself more shortly') and referring to an agreement he had entered into with his correspondent in 1959, which had led him 'to believe that I would be freed from all matters of keeping accounts and from endless discussions', continuing to rectify several points raised in his correspondent's recent letters, in part, 'Our contract gives you control of world sales, and the exhibitions in New York were arranged with the approval of the Galerie Rive Droite….To date no accounts have been given me of transactions….Among other activities in New York I was responsible for selling a watercolour for $400, as well as some drawings at a good price….In your second letter you say you haven't taken paintings to cover the contract. I have receipts for all the works you have taken which exceed what you have paid me. You admit you haven't paid me the four millions due in 1961. The contract stipulates three millions to be paid over the period…..I cannot go into details here, since you promised to keep accounts for me. Anyhow, your small investment in me has paid off already, I'm sure. And will continue to pay. I have done much more than you in the way of publicity: interviews, radio and television in France and abroad, as well as participating in non-commercial official exhibitions. In 59, before our contract I consigned only the Orateur to Loeb, asking him only 300.00 francs for it. He did not sell it because he probably asked a couple of thousand dollars for it, and I took it back. I sold it to you for 200.00 frs. as an object, although I have always considered it as important as any painting. But I wasn't going to argue with you - I counted on the future. COHL EMILE: (1857-1938) French caricaturist, cartoonist and animator, regarded as 'The Father of the Animated Cartoon'. A.N.S., Emile Cohl, to one side of a plain postcard, n.p. (Paris), n.d. (29th August 1887), in French. Cohl writes 'Faultless tonight - maybe zing!' and confirms that the exact time will be 12h. Hand addressed by Cohl to the verso to Jullien at 28 Rue du Sentier. Rare. GUIMARD HECTOR: (1867-1942) French architect and designer, a prominent figure of the Art Nouveau style. A rare A.L.S., Hector Guimard, one page, 8vo, Castel Beranger, Rue de la Fontaine (Paris), 6th March 1899, to Monsieur Roulhac (?), in French. Guimard writes to arrange an appointment with his correspondent, in full, 'Pourriez vous passer demain Jeudi Mercredi entre 2h et 3h. Monsieur O. Uzanne m'a parle de vous c'est pourquoi je suis adresse a vous' (Translation: 'Could you drop by tomorrow Thursday Wednesday between 2pm and 3pm. Mr. O. Uzanne told me about you, that's why I am addressing you'). With blank integral leaf. Some light ink blotting, caused by the paper being folded whilst the ink was still a little wet, and with a small, neat tear to the left edge of one fold. About VG Octave Uzanne (1851-1931) French bibliophile, writer, publisher and journalist who took an interest in fashion and femininity in the French fin-de-siecle and collaborated with Symbolists and early Art Nouveau artists. The Castel Beranger, designed by Guimard, is a residential building with thirty-six apartments located in Paris. Built between 1895-98 it was the first residence in Paris built in the Art Nouveau style.
NADAR: (1820-1910) Gaspard-Felix Tournachon. French photographer, caricaturist and balloonist, the first person to take aerial photographs (1858). A good A.L.S., Nadar, one page, 4to, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris, n.d., to [Paul] Gavarni, in French. Nadar writes a charming letter of introduction, 'Bonjour a mon cher Maitre et ami! Voici deux de nos amis Martinet et Royer - deux plus enthousiaste de vous peut etre que tout le monde, ca qui est difficile tout de meme. Les hommes ont collectionne votre oeuvre autant q'uils l'ont pu: ils desirent autant qu'il sera possible, completer et ils sont surtout heureux, me disent-ils de cettre occasion de se trouver avec vous. Si cette lettre doit leur servir de Sesame, ouvre toi! Je la leur donne bien volontaire, et j'en prends occasion de vous serner bien cordialement la main' (Translation: 'Hello my dear Master and friend! Here are two of our friends Martinet and Royer, two who are perhaps more enthusiastic than everyone else, which is difficult all the same. These men have collected your work as much as they could: they want to complete it as much as possible and they are above all happy, they tell me, about this opportunity to be with you. If this letter is to serve them as Sesame, open up! I give it to them very willingly, and I take the opportunity to shake your hand very cordially'). In a postscript Nadar has penned an intriguing calculation, seemingly a puzzle, involving various letters and figures, asking 'Comprenez vous celui la?' (Translation: 'Do you understand this one?'). French illustrator who, like Nadar, was keenly interested in the question of aerial navigation and made experiments on a large scale with a view to find the means of directing balloons.
‘I therefore come to ask you….to put an end to a state of affairs which is for me a terrible torture, physical and moral, and of which I am yet to understand the usefulness as well as the justice’ PROUDHON PIERRE-JOSEPH: (1809-1865) French philosopher, socialist and politician, the founder of mutualist philosophy and the first person to declare himself an anarchist. A.L.S., P.-J. Proudhon, two pages, 8vo, Citadel of Doullens, 4th May 1850, to 'Monsieur le Directeur', on the printed stationery of La Voix du Peuple, in French. The imprisoned Proudhon writes to plead with his captor, in full, 'D'apres un mot que m'a dit hier le major, et cela, autant que je puis presumer, de votre part, il dependrait de vous de faire cesser mon isolement. Si j'avais cru que cette affaire etait laissee a votre discretion, il y a longtemps, Monsieur le Directeur, qu'au lieu de solliciter le ministre, qui ne repond pas, je me serais adresse directement a vous. Je n'aurais pas cru plus indigne de moi, je vous jure, de frapper a la porte du subordonne qu'a celle du superieur. In December 1849, whilst in prison, he married 27 year old Euphrasie Piegard, with whom he had four daughters.
VALERY PAUL: (1871-1945) French Poet and Philosopher. A very fine A.L.S., `Paul Valery´, three pages, 8vo, n.p. [Paris], Thursday 2nd March 1944, to Monsieur Bourguignon, in French. On his personal stationery, bearing his blind embossed Parisian address to the upper left corner, Valery explains to his correspondent the reason of his absence at the council session, stating `Mon état de santé, encore bien incertain, ne m´a pas permis d´assister à la séance d´hier du Conseil, et d´avoir le plaisir de vous y rencontrer. Je vous aurais vivement remercié de l´envoi que vous avez bien voulu me faire de ce bel album napoléonien´ (“My health, still very uncertain, did not allow me to attend yesterday´s Council meeting, and to have the pleasure of meeting you there. I would have sincerely thanked you for sending me this beautiful Napoleonic album”) Valery further refers to the Emperor, Napoleon, and to the Malmaison museum which his under the direction of his correspondent, saying `…ravivant mes souvenirs de la Malmaison et du Musée de l´armée. Il faut avouer qu´on ne peut pas se lasser de songer à l´Empereur. Tout ce qui contribue à nous faire imaginer plus précisément cet être extraordinaire nous est précieux…´ (“…rekindling my memories of Malmaison and the Army Museum. We must admit that one cannot get tired of thinking of the Emperor. Anything that helps us imagine this extraordinary human being more precisely is precious to us...”) Further again Valery comments that during his next visit he will relate to his correspondent few very interesting things related to Napoleon, stating in part `…je vous raconterai une ou deux choses qui vous intéresseront… et une troisième qui vous intéressera certainement, toutes les trois relatives à notre héros…´ (“… I will tell you one or two things that will be of interest to you… and a third that will certainly be of interest to you, all three relating to our hero…”) Paper with a Verge Muller watermark. Very light crease to the bottom right corner, otherwise VG Jean Bourguignon (1876-1953) French Historian. Curator of the Malmaison Museum 1917-46, a house which was offered by Napoleon Bonaparte to his spouse Josephine de Beauharnais. He was also curator of the Museum of the Armies, and a specialist in the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, publishing several works. Bourguignon was the author of the first biography of Arthur Rimbaud.
SAINT-PIERRE JACQUES-HENRI BERNARDIN DE: (1737-1814) French writer and botanist, best known for his popular 19th century children's book Paul et Virginie (1788). A.L.S., Bernardin De Saint Pierre, one page, 8vo, Paris, 14th August 1808, to Monsieur le Danoir (?), in French. Saint-Pierre writes, in part, 'Je me sens rejoie et honoré de l'aimable invitation de Monsieur le Danoir. J'aurai l'honneur de me presenta chez lui, jeudi prochain 18 a l'heure qu'il ma indiquee' (Translation: 'I feel delighted and honoured by the kind invitation of Monsieur le Danoir. I will have the honour to present myself at his home, next Thursday 18 at the time he indicated to me'). Some light creasing and very minor age wear, about VG
STENDHAL: (1783-1842) Marie-Henri Beyle. French writer, considered one of the early and foremost practitioners of realism, whose works include Le Rouge et le Noir (1830). A.L.S., M. Beyle, one page, 4to, n.p., 15th February n.y. (1827), to [Frederick Yates], in English. Stendahl writes, in full, 'I thank you very much for the tiket (sic) you send me. By some mistake of the devils, they refused admittance but to the upper galleries, so I have not seen the performance. But in Lancaster, in the last August, I have admired the efficiency and energy of your mimickal (sic) powers. I thank you anew Sir, and pray to believe me your most obliged servant'. With blank integral leaf (minor repair to a slight split at the edge of a fold). Some light foxing, otherwise VG Frederick Henry Yates (1797-1842) English actor and theatre manager whose first stage appearance was in France. Yates put on a three-act production of Yates Laughable Entertainments in 1827.
SCOTT WALTER: (1771-1832) Scottish historical novelist, poet, playwright and historian. Manuscript docket signed, Walter Scott, to the final page of a manuscript document, Selkirk, 31st July 1805. The manuscript document is a Summons between Christian Pasley and William Tait, four pages, folio, Selkirk, 29th May 1805, and states, in part, 'Whereas it is humbly meant and shown to us by Christian Pasley….that where the Complainer about Martinmas last brought forth a female natural child to William Tait…..presently working at a road which is making over the hills……and although the said William Tait is the father of her child, yet he refuses to acknowledge himself as such and to pay her a suitable maintenance for its support although frequently desired unless compelled. Therefore the said William Tait….ought & should….make payment to the said Pursuer of the sum of one pound Sterling…..per Quarter for the first three Quarters for nursing said child during that period, and the sum of three pounds Sterling per annum thereafter untill the said child shall attain the age of twelve years complete for cloathing & maintaining it during that period', followed by a statement signed by William Tait denying being the father, in part, 'the Defender who denies being the Father of the pursuers child, he admits being acquainted with her and that he was her fellow servant at Mrs. Horsburgh's…..' Scott's docket, signed in his capacity as Advocate Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire states, in part, '….the Sheriff allows the pursuer a proof of the circumstances condescended on with certification that if they be proved he will allow the Pursuers oath in supplement & that the Defendr. will be found liable in all the expense….' DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English novelist. A very fine, extensive A.Q.S., Charles Dickens (an excellent example, with paraph), one page, 4to, n.p., 28th April 1858. Writing in his characteristic blue ink Dickens has neatly penned a twenty-three-line quotation from David Copperfield, in full – -“We had only one check to our pleasure, and that happened a little while before I took my leave, when Miss Mills chancing to makesome allusion to tomorrow morning, I unluckily let out that, beingobliged to exert myself now, I got up at five o’clock. WhetherDora had any idea that I was a Private Watchman, I am unableto say; but it made a great impression on her, and she neitherplayed nor sang any more.“It was still on her mind when I bade her adieu; and shesaid to me in her pretty coaxing way – as if I were a doll, I usedto think:“Now don’t get up at five o’clock, you naughty boy. It’s sononsensical!”“My love”, said I, “I have work to do”“But don’t do it!” returned Dora, “Why should you?”It was impossible to say to that sweet little surprised faceotherwise than lightly and playfully, that we must work to live.“Oh! How ridiculous!” cried Dora“How shall we live without Dora?” said I“How? Anyhow!” said Dora.She seemed to think she had quite settled the question,and gave me such a triumphant little kiss, direct from herinnocent heart, that I would hardly have put her out ofconceit with her answer, for a fortune” – David Copperfield, by……’ Signed and dated by Dickens at the foot of the quotation. Autograph Quotations Signed by Dickens are extremely rare, and this is a particularly handsome and desirable example, both for the physical size of the paper and length of the quotation. A few light stains to the right edge, only very slightly touching the concluding letters of three words, all of which remain perfectly legible. About VG The present quotation is taken from towards the end of A Little Cold Water, the title of chapter 37 of David Copperfield, published in 1850. The passage illustrates, for the first time, how a shadow is temporarily cast over David’s love for Dora Spenlow, his future wife. Copperfield is deeply in love and does not quite comprehend what the reader sees: Dora, in her present childlike state, unable to cope with the responsibilities of a household, will prove little more than a hindrance to him. Maria Beadnell, Dickens’s first love whom he met in 1830 is thought to have been the model for the character Dora in David Copperfield. Dickens regarded David Copperfield, a largely autobiographical work, as his favourite amongst all the novels he wrote. The quotation was written and signed by Dickens at a significant time in his life, making his choice of passage an interesting one. A year earlier, in 1857, Dickens had fallen in love with the actress Ellen Ternan, and his passion for her was to last the rest of his life. Dickens was increasingly finding his wife, Catherine, to be an incompetent mother and housekeeper, causing him financial worries. In May 1858, after Catherine accidentally received a bracelet meant for Ellen Ternan, Dickens and his wife separated, and Catherine would never see her husband again. After separating from his wife Dickens undertook a series of hugely popular and remunerative reading tours, and the present quotation was signed during the first such tour, which lasted from April 1858 to February 1859 and consisted of 129 appearances in 49 towns throughout England, Scotland and Ireland. The original manuscript of David Copperfield was bequeathed by Dickens to his friend the biographer and literary critic John Forster (1812-1876), who in turn bequeathed the manuscript (together with other books, pictures and important manuscripts) to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. American Book Prices Current record only three other examples of quotations from David Copperfield signed by Dickens as having appeared at auction in the last 25 years.
DODGSON CHARLES LUTWIDGE: (1832-1898) Lewis Carroll. English author, poet and mathematician whose works include Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). A rare signed and inscribed printed leaflet entitled An Easter Greeting to Every Child who Loves Alice, four pages, 12mo, n.p., 11th September 1877. The leaflet takes the form of a letter addressed to Dear Child and was privately printed for the author in Oxford in 1876, the opening text stating 'Please to fancy, if you can, that you are reading a real letter, from a real friend whom you have seen, and whose voice you can seem to yourself to hear wishing you, as I do now with all my heart, a happy Easter'. This first edition first printing is on paper bearing a partial 'E Towgood Fine' watermark and features the word 'My' in Roman type face, instead of italics, at line twelve of the third page. Signed by Carroll with the rarer form of his signature in his characteristic mauve coloured ink to the cover, 'Edith from Lewis Carroll' and dated 11th September 1877 in his hand. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, otherwise VG Copies of the present leaflet, which have previously been described as 'the rarest of the Carroll items excepting the first issue of Alice', were originally printed with the intention of having them inserted into specially bound presentation copies of The Hunting of the Snark, however Dodgson is also known to have given away individual copies to his young friends, as would appear to have been the case with the present example.
COOPER JAMES FENIMORE: (1789-1851) American writer whose romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans is regarded as his masterpiece. D.S., J. Fenimore Cooper, being a signed cheque, Cooperstown, 14th May 1836. The partially printed cheque, completed entirely in Cooper's hand, is drawn on the Otsego County Bank and made payable to Harvey Clark for the sum of $50. Some very light, minor age wear and a very small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. VG

A.L.S., A Dumas f, four pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Madame Porcher, in French. Dumas writes a charming letter to his correspondent, stating that he has arrived in Villeroy to find 'this great news which I was far from expecting', continuing 'I always imagined Bichette at the age of six, and now she is getting married. She is quite right. Of all the follies one can commit, marriage has this advantage over others that one can not repeat it every day' and further writing 'However, she is perhaps a little young and perhaps you have sacrificed a little to the joy of not leaving her, a joy that you would no doubt find difficult to find in another marriage. The man is honourable, fine, but is he energetic, does he have the character to protect, defend, lead his wife, a 16-year-old woman, that doesn't have too much of a husband, and the husband doesn't have too much of a head. I regret not having been in Paris for a year, certainly you would have consulted me, knowing all the interest I have for you, and I would have told you my opinion on the suitor. Alas, I know myself only too well as a man. Fortunately you are all brave and honest people and if God did not protect those there I do not really know what he would take care of. All this will therefore go for the best I hope, but allow me one piece of advice: do not remember in your daughter's household that you are her mother, that you love her as in the past, but for her happiness, abdicate all authority on her. This is what I take the liberty of telling you at this solemn moment, see in it only a new proof of my friendship for you and the quite natural response to the trust you have shown in me'. (c.1883), in French. The manuscript is written in an unidentified hand and was presumably dictated by Dumas fils, although has numerous corrections and deletions in his hand across many of the pages, and represents the author's response to an article that Paul Alexis, a member of the Groupe des Medan (along with Zola, Huysmans, Maupassant, Cerard and Hennique), had published in Reveil, defending himself from the attacks of the Ecole Naturaliste. Dumas fils states, in part, 'My dear child (I continue to call you my child, because the article that you devote to me proves to me that you are still young at the same time as it announces to me that I am already old, which I was beginning to suspect…..The newspaper, of which you are one of the editors, is willing to reprint my novel La Dame aux Camelias in serials, and you have devoted an article to me on this subject. It seems that my novel is decidedly not worth much; that's where you start, and it's far inferior to the masterpieces of Balzac, Stendhal, Flaubert, the Goncourts, Zola, and Daudet. Don't count on me to contradict you……Have we compared Corneille and Racine enough! Rossini and Meyerbeer! For Gluck and Puccini we went further, we fought. What remains of all these comparisons? Nothing. Corneille and Racine, Rossini and Meyerbeer are great minds in different guises. Gluck remained and Puccini disappeared. I am one of the Puccinis of the future…..' With the small circular stamp of the Victor Sanson collection to the front free endpaper, alongside several annotations, and formerly in the collection of Jules Claretie. Some light overall age wear, about VG Paul Alexis (1847-1901) French novelist, dramatist and journalist, best remembered today as the friend and biographer of Emile Zola.
