Sir John Fenn (1739-1794), High Sheriff of Norfolk (1790-91)- A George III silver desk seal, London, makers mark SB almost certainly for Susannah Barker, circa 1790, the banded collar above an oval matrix engraved with a coat of arms set against a castle with crest above and inscription below "NORFOLK", all within a collar of office, the matrix 22.1mm wide, 23.3mm high Note- The crests- a dragons head erased argent gorge with a plain collar azure thereon three escallops argent. The arms- argent, on a fess azure three scallops argent, all within a border engrailed azure. The seal is that of Sir John Fenn (1739-1794), as High Sheriff of Norfolk (1790-91). Although Sir John spent many years as a Justice of the Peace before being appointed High Sheriff in 1790, his main interests were antiquarian. A member of the Society of Antiquaries, he wrote their history. More memorably, he acquired the manuscripts of the Paston Letters, a rare exchange of correspondence between members of the mediaeval family of Norfolk wool merchants, still used today to shed light on the everyday life of the times. he published the letters in an annotated edition dedicated to the King. Following this, he was knighted in 1787. It is considered unusual that the arms are contained within a collar of SS, suggesting civic authority and dignity. The castle, however, on which the arms are set, was a convention adopted more widely by High Sheriffs. Interestingly, a silver-mounted lignum vitae desk seal, illustrated by Michael Finlay, Western Writing Implements, 1900, 9.184, not only bears the same inscription and another Norfolk High Sheriff's arms set on a castle but also the same makers mark. Susanna Barker entered her mark as a smallworker in London in 1778. She is known also to have made wine labels and nutmeg graters. She appears to have ceased work from 1793.
